I would like to nominate JB Pritzker, the governor of Illinois. He is fighting for all the things the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize winner fights for.

Mark Davis's avatar

I want to nominate all of the inflatable animals protesting ICE.

Dump Trump. Think of these two words as a percussive flourish, to be repeated over and again - It's composed for Oct 18th, "No Kings Day."

Anne Lesser's avatar

Yes! To honor No Kings Day, Dump Trump is the perfect sign!

Richard Brody's avatar

How about simply Dump on Trump. In 1952 it was I Like Ike. In 2025 it’s Dump on Trump.

Steve 218's avatar

That is exactly what my rally sign is going to look like - after I get my paint brush and make it.

As a Quaker, I especially appreciated this:

...“peace” is not simply the absence of war. Peace, rather, requires renunciation of violence in favor of democratic and humanistic values.

Trump's peace between Putin's Russia and Ukraine is--Ukraine folds, and then there will be peace. We are dealing with someone who has lots of fire, but no stove and no idea how to cook.

patricia's avatar

However, I think putin has dissed trump and therefore Ukraine will get long range weapons

All the awards for science are themselves a troll of Trump as well.

Yes, so many from American universities that the current administration is trying to destroy!

Stacy1946's avatar

Brava, Jen! This reminds me of Cobert's dictum that "truth has a liberal bias." If you speak the truth about economics, democracy, healthcare, etc. you are, willy nilly, trolling Trump.

1. Maria Corina Machado is no prize. She thanked Trump for help in her country, stands with European anti immigrants and is a would be right wing demagogue.

2. Peace? Trump et al are at war with Venezuelans and Mexicans and phantom groups like Antifa. The president of Colombia sayz that the 4th ship we attacked was actually Colombian.

3. The Gaza deal is the same as worked out by Blinken but Trump told Netantyahu not to take it at that time.

4. Trump empowered Hamas the same as he did the Taliban. As soon as the deal was announced Hamas openly executed 32 "collaborators," which translated means Arab peaceniks, PA, Arab Christians etc. Although the media reported that Hamas was decimated and that there was no military opposition, approximateley 7500 uningformed, AK 47 carrying Hamas appeared.

5. We will be sending troops to Gaza.

Beyond just thanking Trump she also supported the initial airstrikes against alleged "drug traffickers" so she won a Nobel Peace prize shortly after applauding the extra judicial assassination of Venezuelan citizens. Her winning under these circumstances was a disgrace. Considering the peaceful protests achieving remarkable change in Asia right now I think they could have found a less problematic advocate for democracy.

Yes to all of the above!

What bothers me more is why the members of Congress won’t step up to the plate. They, for the most part, know absolutely what is going on in THEIR country.

Why, in God’s name, are they allowing this attack on their democracy to happen in front of them daily. They are also to be blamed for the deterioration of the country.

Anne Pierce's avatar

Republicans in Congress seem to be terrified of lame-duck Trump. Look at the efforts by Johnson to keep the House OUT of session to avoid swearing in the new Congresswoman and having 218 votes to release the Epstein files. Meanwhile, the shutdown that the Republicans caused is hurting the entire country. Can anyone explain why, with majorities in the House and the Senate, plus a President of their party, they didn't simply finalize a real budget timely, instead of attempting to strong-arm Democrats into agreeing to another continuing resolution that allows Affordable Care Act premiums to double and drastically reduces Medicaid?

Money. The support of several billionaires who think/hope they can buy American complicity with their money. More investigation of these greedy pricks who think they can buy America would be useful & welcome.

Most are complicit and know exactly what they are doing.

I find it astonishing that no major media outlets even bothered to cover the Nobel Committee's announcement, let alone sifted its explained rationale for awarding Ms. Machado the Peace Prize. Of course they were trolling Trump. But as Jen says, they weren't even trying to. Trump is so wrong on everything connected with either peace or democracy they didn't have to.

"The tools of democracy are the tools of peace." Maria Machado and those in her movement protected the mechanisms of free and fair elections -- the true vote tallies, the real records absent intimidation or manipulation. The Committee honored the work of those who do exactly the same thing in all democracies under siege.

Can you think of another democracy under recent siege? We all can. January 6, 2021 when hordes of Trump goons and deranged lunatics beat up hundreds of cops, tried to kill people and smeared feces on the walls of Congress rather than abide by certified vote tallies. Does anyone remember the House interns who had the presence of mind to grab the boxes containing all recorded 438 electoral votes, together with the attestations of 50 Secretaries of State and the District of Columbia verifying the tally, and spirited them to an undisclosed location to protect them from Trump's goons and zombies? I haven't forgotten.

That's who the Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to and why.

Susan Stone's avatar

I hadn't heard about the house interns saving the boxes containing the electoral votes. I agree that they deserve the peace prize, if anyone in the US does. I personally don't think our country has been about peace for a long time. We talk a good game, but spend a lot of time in wars, including ones we've started for no good reason.

Susan Stone's avatar

For what it's worth, I don't know that I heard about anybody saving those boxes. I just appreciate knowing that happened. The article was very good. I might have to subscribe to The 19th now.

It's Come To This's avatar

Perhaps those of us in Washington (and who've been Congressional interns before) paid more attention to details like that at the time.

Susan Stone's avatar

I have been working on being more politically aware, but I'm sure that having Washington experience is a big help with things like this.

Thank you, Jen. Trump’s outlandish claims of being a peacemaker totally miss the mark. Understanding democracy and actively working to promote it to be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize usually goes to a person who works tirelessly and with personal sacrifice. This is not the case with Trump. He berates, threatens, and inflicts cruelty rather than taking any positive actions towards peace. He whines and complains loudly while pouting as he goes to his default being the forever victim. Oh, such a poor, pitiful soul. This is not leadership, this is not peacemaking but more of his self-aggrandizement. The Nobel Prize Committee did an outstanding job with their clear explanation of why the award was given this year.

I am so tired of his whining.

Steve Pflasterer's avatar

Thanks for that perspective, Jen.

Donald Trump completely lacks humility. People who admit to being wrong and who learn from mistakes and who are willing to share their knowledge and experience with others are the kind of people over time that eventually win Nobel Prizes. DJT has none of those qualities. Those qualities are often exhibited by many of our best scientific minds because in science mistakes get made more often than most people realize and sometimes great discoveries come from mistakes. Trump doesn’t have the humility to admit when he’s wrong nor does he realize the art of collaboration. Something great scientists do every single day.

Suze's avatar

It's not that trump lacks humility, he's too dumb, even if he were not asocial, narcissistic etc. He is really too dumb, to understand simple words, such as peace.

Susan Stone's avatar

I agree he is too dumb, but he definitely lacks humility. If he had humility, he wouldn't be forever doubling or tripling down on whatever issue others are disagreeing with.

Steve 218's avatar

Scientists also are open to the findings presented by new information and will go where the facts lead rather than holding onto ideals that have been disproven.

Were the Nobel judges trolling the Vulgar Nobel Lobbyist? They were doing something much more effective: they were confronting him. Defying him. Ignoring his demands for recognition. Without naming him they described the reasons for the winner's selection in a way that defined the unfitness of the loser. It was a masterful move by the Nobel Committee.

Chris Sandow's avatar

So well said. Thank you.

Ivan Tufaart's avatar

Even if they did not do it deliberately they said

Take THAT, Don the Con

And of course the best way to guarantee you will never get the award is to lobby for yourself in private let alone in public

Catherine Blanche King's avatar

Ivan Tufaart: Remember when Trump pretended to be someone else to praise himself in a call in show? Nothing has changed.

Carol Lama's avatar

When Ms. Machado's winning of the Nobel was announced, the thought that immediately crossed my mind was not only that she deserved it, but that it was a very in-your-face message to the Felon-in-Chief. Kudos to the Nobel Committees for trumpeting the values that we are all struggling to keep alive here.
