We need our small businesses and if they are owned by women or minorities then all the better. It’s small businesses that sometimes offer specialty services that larger entities don’t provide and can’t compete with. Even if they don’t offer specialized services the cost for their services is often more reasonable in the beginning because they are wanting to establish themselves in the industry but once established they can compete with all the others. I have found in the past that mom and pop businesses offer better quality products and services than their competitors. Glad to hear that DBE exists.

I was so impressed by this article, I sent a copy to my Michigan Senator, Elissa Slotkin. Senator Slotkin is amazing in so many ways, but has a lot on her plate, so I just wanted to make darn sure this is also on her radar.

I'll also be sending it to Hilary Scholten, our Michigan House Representative, who also does a great job for both Michigan and the United States.

Hi Jamie! Wow, what a career you have and thank you for sharing your story. And to hear how you Gma started it all....what a legacy! I am a Civil Engineer and work for my state DOT as a material engineer who sees all these contracts and Primes/subs.....and exactly what you said happened. We were informed that the DBE system was suddenly taken off line. As a woman in this male dominated field of construction I was devastated. It was a direct shot at me as a woman and at anyone else who is a POC. I am always energized to see fellow women on a work site in a hard hat and steel toed boots with dirt smeared across our PPE vests, knowing the barriers. But as a member of a family with businesses, I empathize with the financial realities this brings. I just want to convey that I heard your story, see your bad@ss skills and will stand with you to turn this around. I wish I could do more.....I'll share your story with my colleagues and community so they know too how vital this program is to many Americans.
