This is really a boneheaded decision to dismantle an organization that provides assistance to people who have been displaced by natural disasters and other causes. This should be an outrage to everyone. The less fortunate are always harmed the most.
The purpose of all of this cruelty and destruction is to tear away the fabric that binds us as Americans. If Trump can turn us against each other, he wins. We all need to work at mending the tears by helping our neighbors in any way that we can. Our strength of community is the antidote to cruelty.
Last week the Good Neighbors agency in Maryville, Tennessee, abruptly lost 4 of its staff members who were paid through AmeriCorps. Good Neighbors provides services and financial support to individuals and families who are at risk of becoming homeless. The senseless cruelty of these cuts is mind boggling.
It's absolutely beyond belief that ANYONE in this country can still make ANY attempt to claim that Donnie-2-dolls is "better for the economy" when just this one--illegal and unconstitutional--move cuts a program that adds $17 to the economy from every merely $1 of government input. Just that alone proves AmeriCorps is very definitely "a priority."
But then, Donnie-2-dolls is so completely removed not only from reality, but also from anyone in this country who isn't a billionaire and one who pats him on the head frequently to feed his desperation for attention and praise. Would ANYONE reading this EVER consider 30 dolls--THIRTY--for a single child's present for xmas? It would never even come to mind, would it. The vast majority think of ONE doll. Even the concept of 30 would NEVER cross your mind, right? That comes from someone who is so off in the ozone that he has never in his life had any idea what the lives of Us The People, whom he is to serve, are like.
Of course, narcissist that he is, he wouldn't bother to think about our lives ever anyway. He's too busy thinking about his next corrupt and selfish act.
My 22-year old daughter spent 6 months last year working with a wonderful AmeriCorps team in the lower Hudson Valley battling invasive species and restoring native plants - hard long hours but immensely rewarding. Breaks my heart to see this program dismantled to funnel even one of our tax dollars to the most wealthy.
My Title 1 elementary school, Bayshore Elementary in Daly City, CA lost its garden teacher last week. Americorps sponsored teachers in this position for nearly 10 years. The first young biologist who took up the job went on to complete his teaching credential and become our 5th grade teacher. He laid the base for two other Americorps teachers who picked up his mantle. Getting our kids into the garden gave hands on experiences that enhanced our science programs. Kids grew vegetables and ate them. They learned the parts of plants, and what it takes to create a healthy environment required for life. Going back to the time when the garden had no gardener, no teacher of nature, no organizer of fun outdoor projects breaks my heart.
I wish I could post the photo I took in September 2001 in Hot Springs Arkansas of 3 AmeriCorps workers on break. They sat on a bench with arms behind one another, a young black girl between two young white youths. The girl had an American flag standing up in her hair.
I had embarked on a road trip from San Diego to the east coast & back, arriving in Alamagordo NM the night before 9/11, woke up the next morning to see film of the plane going into the second tower. Continuing east on U.S. highways, I saw innumerable examples of patriotism as I drove through many small towns such as giant American flags painted on the sides of buildings.
Excellent coverage of what AmeriCorps does for our communities and country. And yet another example of Trump destroying all the good in the United States.

AmeriCorps is a blessing.

That's a Red Cross volunteer, not Americorps
