Thank you for this post. As someone who visited the White House after graduating high school in 1979 the demolition of the East Wing hit doubly hard. Its destruction is indeed an apt illustration the harms this Regime is inflicting on us.
We the People must stand fast and refuse to return to Gilded Age with all its ills.
Whether we have seen the WH with our own eyes, like you have, or become familiar with it through pictures over a lifetime, as I have, I believe the people's house is as representative of America as the flag. This was no different from a flag burning, Donald. You just shit on your own executive order.
Trump not only destroyed the East Wing without permission but he had it done without any of the caution needed when demolishing buildings with asbestos. He should be tarred and feathered and then deported. See how he likes lawless behavior aimed at him.
"...a broad coalition of nonprofit organizations and activists are fighting back in the court of law and in the court of public opinion to expose what this administration is doing, who it’s harming, and how we can still resist authoritarianism through truth, justice, and civic action." That is an excellent course of action. May you all go from strength to strength. We absolutely must protect the United States of America from becoming a police state. That is, for me, the primary fight.
The power behind the short-fingered vulgarian sent us all a message with his destruction of the East Wing: "This is no longer The People's House. This is our House and our Country, to do with, whatever we please."
We can either submit and end up in some kind of oligarchic theocracy, or we can rise up. Or at least I hope most of us rise up - I have trouble just standing. If I were mobile, I'd go wherever I could to protest, sing, shout, and pray (they don't like that either, which is why they assaulted the pastor with pepper balls). We The People have to do this, because we appear to have been totally abandoned by the Republicans, who are presently in the majority.
You would think there might be some sort of a congressionally elected committee to oversee the grounds of the U. S. government which includes new constructions and alterations of the White House and its grounds. All the buildings and structures that make up the government.
"The bulldozed White House East Wing is an all-too-obvious metaphor."
Maybe, but mostly for the Left, who detest absolutely anything and everything Trump says or does. And then you drone on incessantly about other "authoritarian" acts.
"We shouldn’t treat any of these acts as a sideshow."
We also shouldn't light our hair on fire and run down the street shouting at the top of our lungs at the latest "outrage du jour" simply because you have nothing else better to do. The Left has been constantly lecturing everyone else that Trump is some existential threat to democracy since 2015. You've been so convincing that he was elected...twice. Had the Dems done a better job at governing and were honest about Joe Biden's obvious mental decline, perhaps Kamala would be President now. But the Dems and their media cohorts lost their spine along the way and voters decided to give Trump another chance.
Perhaps it's time you put down the lighter fluid and matches and realize that Trump is a lame duck President. It is in his best interests for everyone not to notice so he can do what he wants before he leaves office in a little over three years. And yes, Susan, he will leave. There's no supersecret plan to declare martial law and make Trump President for Life or any other such nonsense. There will be elections in 2026, 2028 and beyond. Democrats at some point will regain power in each of the three branches of government. Life will go on. But go ahead and stay in full panic mode all you want.
"The East Wing once stood as the entrance through which millions of ordinary Americans took tours of the White House and gained a glimpse of their government."
And in the future, there will be a ballroom and millions of ordinary Americans will get to see it. And future Presidents, including Democratic ones, will utilize it. Unless, of course, you and your fellow cohorts at "Democracy Defenders Action and a broad coalition of nonprofit organizations and activists" decide to file lawsuits, have a sit-in or something else symbolic but equally silly and useless.
