And now MLB is caught up in the gambling crap that I saw coming the moment it was ushered in. We gave players, owners, advertisers, and broadcasters millions and millions of dollars, but that just wasn't enough. We all knew the cautionary tale of the Black Sox and Pete Rose, and every other betting scheme gone awry. Now there will be a massive spate of broken homes, mental illness, and suicide, so that rich men can get richer. The excellent state of play that baseball finally achieved will mean nothing.
I grew up watching every Cubs game on WGN. That kind of continuity makes even losing underdogs loyal fans. For years after broadcast TV was superseded by the paid platforms, I couldn't afford to watch baseball. I was thrilled to come back to my favorite pastime a few years ago, only now to have it all threatened again. Because robo-umpires and betting cheats are not why I watch baseball, or any sport. Will this be the last year I can have that one little pleasure?
All in the name of the almighty dollar, so the rich get ever richer and the poor, or even middle-class, go without. Kind of takes us right back to those Democratic senators, and I don't just men the infamous eight.
Thank god for people like Pablo and Jen, who at least keep their eyes on these shenanigans.
Ark, I have watched all of my favorite things slip away in the past 10 years. And this is while I still have some money and health. This country has become a wasteland that I wish I had left years ago. But thanks for being there. Some of us still care about honesty and the simple pursuit of happiness.
You know, I catch myself saying more and more often, "I was not born one minute too late." I absolutely hate the world we are leaving to our children, grand children, etc.
That's what I don't get, here you have someone like the white apartheid loving south afrikaner producing one child after another, as do so many of the very rich. Don't they think their spawn will be affected by their lousy choices? Or do they think their money is going to save their spawn from the fall-out? On Mars maybe?
…or are they just stupid? We have to rationally look at all the alternatives :)
The tone of daily discourse alone is so awful. Here at the Contrarian, we are largely all on the same page. Yet when I posted something in a neutral manner that someone didn’t want to hear, I was called “nasty” twice last week. My language was anything but nasty. Social media has made people naturally defensive and suspicious. I thought chatting here amongst so many like-mindeds would be cool, but I keep seeing this, likely among people younger than us. They can’t bear to be “wrong,” take any difference of opinion as a prelude to war. Stop the world, I wanna get off!
Yup, I know what you mean, although I think many people have difficulty with reading comprehension. Last week I received an "answer," with three likes, no less, that had absolutely NOTHING to do with my original post. Go figure.
I have seen the same here as well. If someone wants to disagree with me that’s fine as long as they are respectful. Many times their countering opinion is incoherent. But if they are downright disrespectful I will block them. I refuse to be bullied.
I don’t think Elon even thinks on the same level as someone who knows far more about human ecology than he does. If we listened to his screwed up logic we’d all be in a heap of trouble. I hope all his gamete contributions have been destroyed by now. His stupid ideas about human population growth would promote competition between different groups of people for food resources, employment and other many other things.
What context are you talking about? You sure didn't give any in your very short attack. If you can't understand why someone might want to leave the country with the current fascist regime in place, one has to assume you are one, too.
By the way, keep these talks with Mr. Torres coming; this was the first I'd watched, and I like the broad insights to be gained from the sports/politics/etc. niche. I was also glad to hear a discussion about some of the ramifications of sports betting. The trickle-down effects are far-reaching, and I'm sure we'll be getting to those soon. Thank you.

I have had the same experience.

Fracking in sports sounds like an interesting newer thing.
