Can't make this in California. If I ran water over pasta and down the drain for 15 minutes, I'd be under arrest ;) But I'm sure there are less extravagant ways to cool and rinse the pasta.

The most perfect summer treat I remember was when I was about 3 or 4. It was an ice cream called Pink Mint, that we got in cones from a little shop in Kensington, MD, near where the train came in each evening. On rather few, precious summer evenings, just after Daddy got home from work in DC, we would go to see the evening train come in, and get our Pink Mint cones. I later made a recipe from an old Joy of Cooking - soak those white mints with red-stripes around the rim and make ice cream with the soaking milk or cream - and when I tasted it, it was the exact same flavor. Which I had not planned or expected. Talk about nostalgia!

Eeek. You should get arrested for rinsing pasta for 15 minutes no matter which state you live in. It’s supposed to say 15 seconds!!! My fault and we will be changing the copy shortly!

Oh, LOL I'm glad to hear that! The recipe sounds like fun - thanks for sharing it.

I happened to be rapturously eating a BLT when I opened this - reveling in our small DC court win for the DC police - and reminiscing about one of the few saving graces of Middletown Ohio where I spent a few summers --the silver queen corn, beefsteak tomatoes, and cantalopes at the farm stands

I grew up outside of Philadelphia, but for me, there is nothing like a Jersey tomato sandwich with Hellman’s mayo. Yum - plain and simple. Also spitting seeds out while eating a fresh slice of luscious, pink watermelon. The very taste of summer!

Some of the garden tomatoes are starting to turn reddish, so turkey bacon and tomato sandwiches (who needs lettuce?) on my homemade bread should be making a lunch time debut soon. I like the salad presented here and will give it a try one of these days.

My favorite sandwich as a kid was bologna or pimiento loaf on egg bread (from the local bakery) and half an avocado smushed into the bread. My mother never bought sliced grocery store bread. My other favorite thing I got for lunch was a Hungarian dish with pasta shells, cottage cheese and sour cream. That dish is still a favorite, especially with bacon added.

During hot Houston summers, Mom would take us to the A&W stand for root beer floats. She also would keep a stock of Bubble Up and vanilla ice cream at home to cool down after a day in the apartment swimming pool. No air conditioning, but lots of cooling treats!

Growing up in St Louis, even though we attended the local Catholic school, we went to the local public school during the week for sports, gymnastics, swimming (bused to the local pool), arts & crafts, etc. But on Fridays, my mom sent us with two slices of Wonder bread and a slice of American cheese (yes, it's as bad as it sounds). This was back when Catholics weren't supposed to eat meat on Fridays (not just during Lent). But, on weekends, we all (5 kids) piled into the station wagon (no seat belts) and headed to Velvet Freeze, the local ice cream parlor. They'd run a special - 3 scoops of any flavor sherbert in a special cone that easily held two scoops side-by-side with a third on top.

Many giggles in that article, Marissa!

The scent of Youth Dew immediately flowed to my nose. Dear thought because I know exactly what you are thinking about. The bushel of blue crabs brought tender thoughts to mind since I lived on the Eastern Shore of Maryland all my life. Those memories are special! “Picking” hard crabs was a heavenly event with all of its messiness and memorable flavor! The height of fun and delight! The BLT plus salad sounds divine! Thanks.

I love BLT! Will have to try it both ways!
