Magnetic candidates can score votes with the electorate over polling any day. You’re definitely on point Anat!

“There are also instances where Democrats do break from middle of the road messaging and seize the mic.”

And you omit Gavin Newsom!?

This article is spot on. The texts I receive every day from Dems is same old, same old. There is no effort to engage - just asks for money. The latest is a request for $100. Without any explanation of what they have done to deserve an amount way above most people's ability to pay. Or they say they are not asking for money but want my opinion - which ends with asking for money!! Tell me stories, give me an action, show me an actual event or success, keep me abreast of laws, and most importantly show me you all are working together for me.

But I have been thinking, and this article touches on it lightly, Dems always manage to create "them" and "us" positions. They have not built an overarching plan that helps people understand that these fights for LGBTQ+ rights, reproductive rights, worker's rights, people of color rights, and humane immigration laws fit into the idea that democracy is about fairness, opportunity, and equity for everyone. Even during the shutdown, Republicans managed to create a "us" (affordable healthcare for 20 million Americans) against the Trump regime creating a cruel world where food assistance, federal jobs, and travel were hurting the "them". And the Dems provided no overarching story to justify how the "them" and "us" are connected and how the fight for one group is really part of a whole.

It seems voters are more motivated by what they are against, rather than what they are for. And there is plenty to be against in the Republican agenda: corruption, cruelty, contempt for their voters, economic incompetence, arrogance, and government overreach. These failings must be trumpeted from the rooftops and turned into brainworms. That is how their party has succeeded, and how they may be brought to heel.
