My usual style when reading a recipe online is to skip down to the actual recipe and not bother with the long, dull-to-all-except-the-writer's-friends, essay on how the concoction came to be. Not this post, which gives a lot if sage advice for all. And the cookie recipe, as my mom said decades ago, "reads well." Thanks.

The only commencement I attended was from high school because the nuns told us if we didn't attend we wouldn't get a diploma and I believed them. I earned a BA English Literature, MBA concentration in accounting, and PhD Accounting, minor in law. I did not attend any of these commencements since I would be alone. I did tell the University of Houston (PhD) that I would attend, and then that I had to cancel because I was told by the registrar's office to do this since the university would buy my hood (the garment worn over the head and down the back of the black gown) and then mail it to me. However, with 35+ years as a university professor I attended a gazillion graduations (multiple ceremonies each year, some in heat, some in rain) and enjoyed seeing the students, their families and friends celebrate. I remember the worst commencement speaker, Hal Holbrook (who would have though), who must have taken his "I'm a very grumpy old man" pills that morning. All he did was condemn the graduates who were not as good as his generation. My daughter graduated from Smith and Nancy Pelosi was going to be the commencement speaker. I was very much looking forward to that, but alas, COVID sent everyone home and we listened to a recorded speech by Rep. Pelosi. It was good, but not the same as it would have been in person. I absolutely love oatmeal so I'll be making these cookies this weekend, but no raisins since I hate raisins (grapes are good though). I'll add walnuts. Thanks for the recipe and the commencement speech.

I’m so glad to read your remembrances. Odd about Hal Holbrook; what a boor! I think Nancy Pelosi spoke at MHC the year after!. In other news, nuts would’ve been added to my cookies, but my family would’ve revolted. Peasants.

Thank you Jen for including Governor Healey's entire speech at your daughter's graduation. It was so inspiring! I'm so glad I was able to read the entire speech which was so loaded with wisdom and beautiful values. My congratulations to your daughter for her graduation and achievements from what sounds like a really extraordinary college. All my best wishes to her for her future professional and personal life! I'm sure she will create a life of joy and meaning which will benefit all who come into contact with her.

Great article! Ok, I just made these cookies and they are THE BOMB. Definitely let the dough sit overnight before baking to make sure they are nice and moist. (Dried cherries are my jam, so I went with those and chocolate chips…) As George Takei would say “Oh, my…..”

You ruined it with the choc chips, who puts chocolate chips in Oatmeal Cookies?? I thought the whole point was to make cookies without chocolate chips?😏

Is there a link for the recipe? Thanks

It's been sunny and warm in the actual PNW here lately. 😁 My grandmother used to make oatmeal cookies all the time. Looking forward to trying your recipe.😋
