Now, come on, Mr. Acosta; we need more narrative than that to believe that Duke has never pooped in your shoes. Sure, he barks a good game with that expression... but I want to see both of you swear solemnly on your chosen book that a) Duke has never sounded off like a beagle at inopportune moments and b) that Pops has never swore about it even under his breath. Wishing you endless adventure from a fellow cubana and dog mami.

Yes, Duke has sounded off in the past, right in the middle of Jim's podcasts. I haven't heard him lately, so he must have learned to watch his manners when dad is talking to his laptop. 🤣

I knew Jim was whitewashing this important issue :) Nice ta see ya, AK Blue.

Thank you, KKG Nice to see you, too. Have a great weekend, be sure to take one day off from all news for your mental well-being.

I keep hearing your advice echoing in my head, and then there is the laptop. I do have some meditative hobbies, I promise :)

Believe me, I know how that goes. But I force myself to read a good book one day on the weekend. It usually works. And I read books every night of the week.

I have been reading the humorous books of Carl Hiaasen exclusively since the idiot in the WH rode his stupid escalator into our bank accounts. I'm an editor and writer who works on mostly sobering or sad topics, so I try to stick to the funny when not on the clock. Nice to hear readers speak out. I like to "performatively read" when in public, to model good behavior to the phone-scrolling set :)

Thank you! Ever since you introduced us to Duke on your show in the beginning and then he disappeared (because he was interrupting you?)I wondered where he was and what happened to him. He's a real sweetie! When you travel, does he come along? Or does he have a nanny?

Well, he has learned overtime to just hang out on the sofa until I’m done. That’s how good of a boy he is. Sometimes he comes in, but usually he knows to just hang out until I’m done.

I don’t know how I’d keep from losing my mind if not for petsitting!!

Dogs are the best! Cats too! They bring good things to our lives every day the are with us.

Duke is really really handsome! It's hard to figure out whether he actually sits at the dinner table - or is on the floor by your side like most doggies. I like imagining him in a chair next to you, wearing a bib and using cutlery. Maybe you rescued him from a lab. Many beagles are used in labs. They have sweet dispositions, so the handlers have an easier time with them. Thank you for sharing his profile. Obviously, the love goes in both ways between you and him.

We really must abolish lab testing on cats and dogs. 💔💔

ROSE B RINDER's avatar

Thank you. I will shamelessly talk about the lab testing on animals any time I get an opportunity. Contrarian Pets seems like a good place to get the word out. I appreciate your comment!

I have met beagles rescued from medical testing. I helped advocate for beagle feeedom bills in states. I know about why this breed is used. It outrages me and breaks my heart. We must stop it in our life times.

Thank you for being an animal activist! I am a member of Peta, so I try to advocate for all animals. The cruelty that happens in labs is beyond belief, and doesn't advance cures for humans. I have seen the statistic that anywhere from 90% or more lab "science" is ineffective for human medicine. As time goes by, I realize that any use of animals for profit is corrupt. And labs make money on animal experimentation. Millions of dollars go to colleges and hospitals for this purpose. There are computer models available for this type of research, and Physicians for Responsible Medicine are involved in promotion of these models, as is Peta.

Yes, I actually agree with you. In my own experience I think that talking about cats and dogs is a way to get people to start thinking about it and care. It’s an entry point to move people from pre-comtemplation to contemplation. Keep up the good work ❤️🐾

You make a good point. I will remember that!

PS: that you for being a voice for the four-legged angels among us who cannot speak for themselves 🐾🐾❤️ Your kindness and compassion matter!!

OMG. Those deep, sensitive, intelligent, loving eyes! I’m in love after so long. Beautiful. I want to know his or her name! (Oh, I saw him earlier on the substack feed with no name). Duke is a perfect name. I really believe that animals are more evolved than us humans and are here to teach us how to live harmoniously in community and basically to teach us how to love. How could anyone not love Duke? I think every child should be raised with a dog or a cat. Enjoy every joyful moment with your lovable Duke, Jim!
