The most important comment in the article is that Mamdani is not going to run in NC, and Cooper is not running in NYC. The Dems need to support the candidates who are the best for their own constituents first, national politics second.

Agree. Who would you endorse for president and vp candidates?

Eric Kruse's avatar

It’s way too early for me to think about the 2028 race. We have no idea who is even running. Let’s hopefully survive the midterms, and worry about the presidency later.

Elizabeth's avatar

Lets hope there are mid terms. Is Trump saving his promised wars against Canada, Greenland and Panama so he can declare an emergency and not have elections?

Hear, Hear! I love the clarity of this.

I live in Asheville NC and we are THRILLED about Cooper!!! Cooper in the Senate is just what our state -- and the country -- needs!

Lesley's avatar

same, just cheering from Shiloh, Roy Cooper is terrific and we will do all we can to get him elected. just think, a Democratic senator from North Carolina! buckle up though, it will be a bit grueling. bet it'll take this cycle's "most expensive contest" title, and the ads will be on 24/7.

Virginia's avatar

Yep, I donated and now Roy Cooper is my texting buddy, lol.

Lesley's avatar

omg, the day of the announcement I was getting them at least hourly and wasn't thrilled, then saw they were from different PACs using his name. but it was nonstop!

Virginia's avatar

Yep! If he wins, the nuisance is worth it tho!

I have unsubscribed to each PAC scam as I get it. And, many of them are scams. I only give directly to candidates' own campaign organizations. My warning: be careful who you give money to. Some of these PACS do almost nothing that actually helps the candidates, not even any good advertising,. They just "endorse" a candidate (as if anyone cares whether or not that "organization" endorses a candidate) and then pay themselves hugh salaries from the donations.

Lesley's avatar

same, only to direct campaign accounts.

Wendy horgan's avatar

And I donated from Maiden NC. Yay!

Now if the Dems could get Gov. Andy Beshear to run for McConnell’s seat in Kentucky, we would catch another big break!

Linda and Todd Morning's avatar

What Dem Governors (who could run for Senate)in Red States need to understand is that all their power will be taken away by the MAGA Federal government. The MAGA Federal government must be STOPPED!!!

Martha's avatar

Ooh…Brilliant idea!

Linda and Todd Morning's avatar

Oh, and while we’re at it. Governor Janet Mills of Maine should run for Senate for Susan Collins seat, and Governor Laura Kelly of Kansas should run for Roger Marshall’s seat. We need these Dems to help us on the national level.

Linda Shindler's avatar

Our Kansas governor Laura Kelly would be great and I hope Roger Marshall goes back to his Florida home.

JudiLI's avatar

Yay! Roy Cooper! Let’s do all we can to get him elected!

We are absolutely thrilled that Roy Cooper decided to run. He is not only a highly respected, effective politician but also a really nice, approachable guy. I had the fortune to meet him at a Democratic Party fundraiser. He genuinely cares about the welfare of ALL North Carolinians.

Buddy Friend's avatar

Wow! What a guy.

This man should be studied by every Democratic candidate. He has the blueprint for success to replace obnoxious and sometimes hideous Republican candidates.

Our democracy is on the line. It really is. Take heed from Roy Cooper.

I think not 60 seconds passed after Cooper's announcement that a Republican attack ad was unfurled against him, no doubt supported by "Americans for Action" or "Billionaires Fobbing Themselves Off as Blue-Collar Workers" or some other bullshit astroturf-roots front organization. If you didn't think they were terrified of him before, perhaps that single fact alone might make you think otherwise.

I'm a North Carolinian and I'm thrilled Cooper is running for Senate. He has been excellent as AG and Governor, but I especially appreciated his calm, careful leadership during Covid. He did what he thought needed to be done, even when it didn't poll well. I'm sure lives were saved bc of his leadership in partnership with medical experts.

Roy Cooper has all the right stuff!

Shannon Starks's avatar

Roy Cooper is great! Not sure we can breathe a sigh of relief yet. Maybe smile and keep working?

I sometimes wonder why the Ds don't repurpose "woke," redefine it. Yes, I'm woke. I believe in human rights and dignity. I believe no child should go hungry, and in a country like ours, we can make sure that doesn't happen. I believe that everyone should be able to thrive because the more we all thrive, the less they require help from others. I believe my taxes and government has sufficient funds to help people succeed. I believe all races and religions, absent an intent to tell others what to do, should be a part of the fabric of a healthy country. I believe in the rights of all people, including women. I believe we should protect our border and create legitimate paths to citizenship. Am I woke? I think I am, and as a citizen and, if I were a politician, I say clearly that I want everyone to thrive. If DJT can make grift a positive attribute, which it is not and which he seems to have done, then we can make woke a positive trait, which it is!

Bob Park's avatar

For me, the opposite of "woke" is "asleep." I would rather be awake.

Jane Mathewson's avatar

Nancy, Your intent is well taken, but even Dems are tired of being preached to about how self rightous you/we supposedly are. Enough already. Isn't it enough for you to know your own values? Just go out there and live them, work or donate to candidates you believe will reach your goals and stop with the hippy preaching. We get it already.

Nancy's avatar

Oh! I didn't realize I was hippy preaching. Not my intent.

Great article Jen. I am so happy that Roy Cooper decided to run! I've heard him speak and he is really impressive. Such a genuine, warm, authentic human being.

Whatley is an unmitigated disaster, having sold his soul down the river long ago. Democrats can fairly paint him as a MAGA extremist who wants to strip poorer North Carolinians of life saving Medicaid and Medicare, ban abortions, push female students to leave the state if they want body autonomy, and on and on.

Stephen Brady's avatar

We need to keep harping on the fact that we are the mainstream party. Our values are much closer to those held by rank and file voters than the MAGA candidates hold. By November 2026, we should be seeing the effects of tRumpism on The Economy and the Healthcare System. If we can just find ways to keep from snatching Defeat from the jaws of Victory, we can begin to impede the MAGA agenda.
