The collective cowardice of those who vote to save their jobs (supposedly) is tantamount to surrendering to the enemy (Trump Fascism 2025). Why any reasonable Congressperson would do so at this time, is a problem that seems to crop up too often. Those who get elected are responsible for doing what their constituent's voted them in for. That is not happening, and it includes both the Democrats and the Republicans in Congress. Our votes are useless if those we send to Congress simply play political games and refuse to take responsibility for what they vote for. If given free reign Trump will abolish Congress altogether. That is what Hitler did, and Trump is using his playbook on a daily basis. Democrats need to band together and fight.

If our elected officials aren't going to represent those who voted them in to speak on their behalf, they need to go. They aren't doing their job...they need to go. I find it hard to believe that democrats haven't figured out that you can't keep the GOP happy...they are simply an extension of their deluded, greedy, hedonistic, immoral leader. He has no real plan or goal other than destroy anything good and grab what he can for himself, with no rhyme or reason. DC deserves better from our members of Congress; if they give Trump more control over DC do they really think he's going to stop there? Now who is deluded? Get a grip people. Do your jobs. Think of the WHOLE country, not just yourselves.

The Democrats seem to have forgotten the lesson of Munich, 1938. The lesson is that giving bullies what they want doesn't make them go away happy. It only shows them that you can be intimidated, so they will come back for more and more and more. It's time for Democratic leaders in the House and Senate to grow a pair, and a backbone-- either that or step aside for someone who has a pair and a spine!

Over 70 years ago, Harry Truman knew the issues when he said:

The people don't want a phony Democrat. If it's a choice between a genuine Republican, and a Republican in Democratic clothing, the people will choose the genuine article, every time; that is, they will take a Republican before they will a phony Democrat, and I don't want any phony Democratic candidates in this campaign.

We don't have to go all the way back to Munich. Too many Democrats have been caving to Republicans on too many issues since the Reagan administration. Look at how long it took Schumer, Jeffries, and the so-called leadership to catch on to what Trump II was about.

The GOP fights for the awful things they may or may not actually believe in.

The Democrats try to become 'moderate' Republicans and fights its own progressive wing (for more, see the non endorsements and criticism of Zohran Mamdani from Democrats).

How many times have we heard this story?

It is time to get rid of those who are unwilling to standup up to Trump and for Democracy. We do not need to seem moderate. We need to seem fired up.

The Dems thinking this need to be corrected immediately. We need a list of their names and a campaign by Dems ti make clear that will lose all Dem support

We Dems do care about DC. We want the Statehood Bill Passed

Susanna J. Sturgis's avatar

100%! Do D.C. license plates still say NO TAXATION WITHOUT REPRESENTATION? When I first registered to vote, it was as a member of the D.C. Statehood Party, led by the late Julius Hobson. That was ca. 1970.

Is nobody (in Congress or elsewhere) paying attention to Bernie's "Stop the Oligarchy" tours? He is convertingi TRUMPERS! If theses wimply "democrats" in swing districts don't grow a pair, they don't deserve to get re-elected.

Here's what I'm talking about! Go Bernie!!!!!!! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RP8Oxe6OxJc

Appeasement does not work. Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain is blamed for Hitler's rise. But it was the complicity of all the European powers. Democrats in Congress should pay attention to that historical lesson. Sacrificing DC will not appease King Donald. David Hogg is correct. Those Democrats who are not actively opposing the GOP federal takeover should admit that they don't have the strength to fight for our Democratic Republic. It's time to allow the progressives to fight our corner. Corporate Dems are allowing their love of campaign contributions and fear of ridicule to keep them from doing the jobs we elected them to.

As a DC resident, I am furious at the rest of the country for leaving us so vulnerable and not respecting our democracy. Many, many Democrats (e.g., Jackie Rosen) have voted against our local legislation. I get mountains of solicitations for donations from Democrats all over the country. Do they not think this is unseemly?

I lived in D.C. for well over a decade, during the time when we finally got a non-voting delegate to the House and the right to elect the mayor and the city council. (Before that all we could elect was members of the school committee, and some people wondered why the school committee was "politicized.") We didn't have a "shadow senator." Would you please explain what that is?

If you've been around a while, you know that "members of Congress who are not accountable to the people of Washington, D.C." have been "decid[ing] the fate of this city’s residents and their families" for many decades.

Racism has *always* been a factor in how D.C. is seen by the public and treated by Congress. That's true now even though the city is no longer majority Black. Could this be why "some Democrats" are apparently willing to let the Republicans take over? It seems David Min is a very new member of Congress, having taken office early this year. Perhaps he needs to learn more about D.C.'s status and why supporting the Republicans on this is anti-democratic and generally a bad idea.

The Dear Leader is launching a trial martial law balloon and is looking to see how the opposition will react. Every time he sends the National Guard or the military to a sovereign city, he is chipping away at Democracy, waiting to see how many exhausted Dems will do something about it. And what do they do? They carry signs, protest and go to court. Although they might win initially, the government appeals to the SC and the corrupt majority does whatever their Messiah tells them to do. We are no longer living in a Democracy.

Thanks for this article. Like others - I wonder, who are these people? I wonder that a lot when I go to the voting booth. What kind of calculus goes into running for office? Why would you subject yourself to raising so much money, yearly? Especially if you are in a swing district. I think you need to be either very committed to improving people's lives and being a public servant, or a grifter looking for money and power. There are far too few of the first kind. And what makes this so hard is the money needed to run for office. Campaign finance laws are the only way to open the doors to those committed to helping with good ideas. It may be too late and this is the government we deserve in a late stage capitalist system. But on my good days - I feel that we can turn this around with good legislation.

We can all use more "good days" :)

God, what are they thinking? "To hell with democracy, what's good for me"? As a father with one child, her husband and a grandbaby in D.C. I am appalled.

If being an opportunist is the goal, why not just go full MAGA?. Very disappointing.

I assume these points were made forcefully to the Democrats who are abandoning the ship. But it does emphasize that Democrats do not have a party-wide coherent strategy to win the mid-terms. I hope the Senate Democrats have a lot more spine

Mo Khan's avatar

If they do this, we will primary them or let them fail. Better to have a maga than a democrat that votes with them

Irena's avatar

I think Democrats need to write/propose a law and order program which voters can rally behind. Show the alternative as well as disapproval. Most Americans may be seeing this in terms of safety, not politics. Democrats can show what safety looks like.
