It has now been well recognized that Trump, his administration, and the complicit GOP in Congress is the enemy within, and that they are not to be trusted to keep any promises made to Democrats in an attempt to further their agenda. It is not up to Democrats to fix the effects of the big ugly bill, nor to abet the GOP in re-opening Congress where their action would be seen as appeasement and would only engender demands for more concessions. Stand together and stand tough. We need Medicaid, SNAP and the WIC support programs. The GOP won't provide 'em, so don't help 'em. Thank you, Norm, for helping to hold their feet to the fire.

Mr. Ornstein, can you please explain to me why my Medicare Plan D prescription insurance is going from $23.25/month to $73.25/month in 2016? This is a 312% premium increase!!! I have been retired for a number of years, after working full-time for 49 years. I receive Social Security, am covered under Medicare Plans A and B and I carry a Medigap supplemental insurance Plan.

None of this has anything to do with Medicaid, SNAP, Obamacare, or any of these other programs for the working poor or single parent families.

Just as an aside, I have a son who retired from the US Air Force after 22 years of service and has been working full-time ever since, meaning he is also a productive member of society.

So far, no one has bothered to explain how the big, ugly bill affects the many retirees in the same position as I am! Why are our premiums going up so much and we haven't even heard from Medicare or our Medigap providers yet.

I don't have a full explanation, but my guess is that Trump's decision to blow up Medicare's ability to negotiate directly with pharma companies has a lot to do with it

I am forced to pay for the Part D plan. The premiums are much more than i would pay for my drugs. This is very unfair to me.

I'm in the same position as you are.

I am too. I attribute it to the lobbying efforts of the drug companies over the decades. I wonder if Christian Scientists are eligible for an exemption fro this, since they don't, as I understand it, believe it taking meds. (I don't either.)

Hopefully you will not need to pay for more medication, but we never know what the future brings. Just like how I never had my health insurance kick in when young--different story now. It's just another part of how insurances work.

You can switch your Medicare part D prescription plan beginning on October 15. You can compare multiple plans on the Medicare.gov website. If you don’t have an account you can register.

Democratic voters do not want their Senators to cave to this untrustworthy bully. We prevailed in a revolution against the British empire, survived a civil war, two world wars, The Great Depression, two pandemics, a cold war, and at least three undeclared wars. We will survive this shutdown. Let this unhinged, deluded bobblehead destroy his presidency.

People who are just drawing Medicare for the very first time have nothing to compare the rising costs to. That can leave one a bit daunted in comparing a work plan to Medicare. I have an older sibling who just started using Medicare in July of this year. Democrats must hold their feet to the fire.

I am amazed that democrats don’t make it clear that this (refusing to pass the R budget) is the only way to achieve any inclusion of bipartisan goals. The normal budget approval process is ruled by the R trifecta, leaving the spending votes, which require 60% approval the only tool available. It’s simple.

Trump will cave on the subsidies because it will help MAGA at the elections to cave. Period.

With CA m, Oregon, and IL being invaded by war troops, we need a stronger message ADDED to meet the moment.

-Eliminate All ICE and concentration camp funding, all $170B. Stop the Gestapo and Concentration camps now.

-Ban ALL funds for national guard or military use against civilians and Elections.

-Eliminate all Palantir and Tesla govt contracts/relationships and get back all data.

From your mouth to the Congress & Senate's ears.

That depends on how the shutdown ends. If the cuts are restored, the Rs escape consequences and, therefore, responsibility ... unless Trump rescinds it.

Yes, yes, yes!

Thank you.

I hope Democrats will win for all of us--we all need health care and health insurance; and the doctors, staff and facilites. Thanks for your article.

Agreed that the Democrats must hold their ground on messaging regarding health care. Why can't they add more demands i.e.1) ICE agents must remove their masks and identify themselves, and 2) release the Epstein files.

"the responsibility for the healthcare catastrophe will be clear."

For that moment, but the collective memory of this country a year later when these changes take effect most likely will have forgotten and/or been obliterated by the trump propaganda machine.

In the end, Republicans will cave on some of the health care issues but not until the Dems agree to pass the CR.

While the DEMS stand up for moral, affordable healthcare,

The GOP bends over for greedy billionaires.
