I believe that the voting tide was turned in favor of Trump by the constant lies told by Trump media (Fox, etc.) and major Trump supporters, along with the constant lies told by Trump himself while campaigning (e.g. that on day one he would lower prices for everything and stop the Ukraine war).
As someone who has worked in entertainment more than half his life this is NOT a fair narrative to push. Yes there are always exceptions.
The rise of reality TV as cheap content to produce, whet the appetite for this.....people pushing back the curtains and gazing at neighbors, "What are they up to". Reality TV "authentic" (BS Scripted Reality) has permeated every aspect of everything we consume. And we consume at earlier and earlier ages. We've now been conditioned.
There are Three (3) BILLION cameras now watching us - 1 in 3 for every human on planet earth.
I've thought this for a long time. Where rulers, no matter where or what they are, have been depicted as the enemy. Makes for good drama but paints government as evil with an expectation of a dystopian future.
I don't think movie plots have that much of an impact on today's chaos. I think changes in news media and social media ... both being used to make money or persuade through lies and misinformation is a much bigger reason .... and the big money in politics and corporate media. It is harder today with algorithms and such for everyone to get truthful information and recognize untruths. I think most people recognize a movie plot for what it is.
Super interesting and important. (I guess your point is proven when I was surprised to see that a former government official had penned it...!). I agree with a lot of your analysis (although I think Angel surpassed Buffy), but I think a bigger media problem than mainstream film/tv is the right-wing ecosystem which pumps propaganda into their audience 24/7, as we are seeing even now with the twisted takes on the L.A. protests as out of control riots destroying the city. When those spun facts are embedded, the victim can't make rational analyses and comparisons with the larger fictional worlds you are addressing. Although I am always thinking to myself as I watch the republicans debase themselves caving over and over to a clear authoritarian - how do they act so un-American - didn't they ever watch The Great Escape?

Reality TV is the culprit! Plant your flag there
Tremendously perceptive and important analysis – thank you
truly worth thinking about. Thank you.
Not what I first expected but got me to thinking about how fictional movies and television shape how we may view the world.
