So, these eight are saying the hardships they have put everyone through in the last 41 days were for nothing and it's perfectly ok for the fascists to decrease taxes on the rich even more, while making at least 24 million poor and low middle income families to pay for those tax breaks?

Shame on every single one of them and I do not ever want to see any one of these eight on The Contrarian videos again.

I honestly don't understand why those eight Democrats chose to capitulate to Trump and his feckless void of a party. There are some fights that you have to support, and this one was perhaps the most important of our lifetime. Now, there is no reason for the Republicans to work with the Democratic Party on anything. Our one point of leverage has been blasted out of the hemisphere by representatives who chose to betray not only their party, but the American People as well. The Republicans are going to get rid of SNAP, and this accelerates that process by allowing them to do so without restraints. If Tim Caine thought that agreeing to this horrible deal was a way to protect Federal Workers, than he is living in a bubble. The Republican House will pare down and eliminate all of these concessions in the agreement before they pass anything and because of their majority, there is nothing the Democrats in the house can do. The credibility damage that the Democrats are now facing with the voters was entirely self-inflicted. I don't know if this is fixable at this point. It does not matter if we send progressives to Congress if the leaders continue this back-deal sell out that undermines everything that the voters wanted and thought would be passed into law.

It just got a lot lonelier for elected Democrats all around as 8 broke unity in an otherwise strong act of dissent. Now my faith in the entire party is shattered, and for one, you can thank selfish John Fetterman, who probably has several important birthday parties and holiday dinners to attend this month. Isn't it something that he could be bothered to vote on a weekend when there was something in it for him?

Arkansas Blue's avatar

Fetterman is just this 119th congress' Manchin and Sinema. They were the 118th. Seems like every congress has one of two Democrats who are more interested in making money off their seats.

KnockKnockGreenpeace's avatar

Worse than the $ even, they are determined to undermine Dems from the inside. That's just gross. I hope Fetterman collapses of his own accord before he gets thrown out a million years from now.

hopefully he will be replaced soon

I have empathy for the fed workers and those dependent upon SNAP, but the healthcare crisis is going to be a complete disaster. Drump is a bully and liar. He should never be allowed to decide how money is distributed. Congress is the purse. Every day they permit him to control money, we will be mortgaging our grandchildren and great-grandchildren’s futures. The East Wing is gone and the contractors are yet unpaid. Is this the way we’re going to operate. Under a facist who continues to allow business, farmers self employed and healthcare keep falling to pieces. It’s unforgivable.

This is Steven Miller and Russell Vought enacting 2025. Trump is a useful idiot. These evil people want disenfranchised people dead

I am so upset I can't believe it - either go all the way or don't even start - freaking wusses.

The republicans will never hold a vote on ACA. They will claim it is a settled issue.

Little M. Johnson has already said what you are suggesting.

I have heard the excuses and none of them make sense. What happened? I can't help but think something dirty went down. How at the exact moment of finally having a glimpse of return to normalcy after the election do they capitulate and tell voters "we don't hear you" and yes we are no different from the Republicans except weaker.

Nick's avatar

This is absurd. The Democrats brought the issue to the forefront. Would you have preferred to have Americans starve?

TFMeehan's avatar

Nick, I'm not sure I'm clear on your comment. Are you agreeing with the cave in because it will restart the SNAP program? That's what it sounds like.

If my interpretation is wrong then I apologize in advance but if not then--

Bringing the issue to the "forefront" is pretty much useless. Even though higher insurance costs affect Dem and Repub voters alike the GOP congressman and Senators serve a bigger master and will be willing to weather any storm that might come their way. If this deal goes through then subsidy extension is over. The Repubs might even bother to have a sham discussion but it is DEAD!

No one wants people to starve but I also don't want them to not be able to afford health insurance. This deal means they will have to choose. SNAP benefits don't feed a family of 4, it helps, but most families still have to spend a certain amount of their available income to have enough...which means they can't afford to buy insurance.

Now the good news is that with insurance costs going up on top of no subsidies they probably can't afford insurance any way.

Absurd is definitely the right term.

Nick's avatar

That's exactly what I'm saying. Americans starving now and Americans freezing in the cold now is simply unacceptable to me. Let's see how the vote for increased subsidies goes.

The "clean" CR is not so clean after all. I guess the GOP considers a $500,000 give away to eight Senators and loss of healthcare to millions of Americans, a clean CR. It's all so disgusting.

I would prefer that Democrats learn how to negotiate! We have no assurance on anything, not even the swearing in of the new Representative from Arizona!

Joyce K's avatar

Were the 8 senators lobbied by the airlines or some other PAC that donates to them? It’s incredible how they capitulated without any concrete guarantees on the continuation of ACA subsidies

I am just as disappointed in these votes but to demonize these legislators because they prioritize dealing with the cruelty of the Trump regime and Republican legislators is just shooting the resistance in the foot. The outcry should be against the ramped up cruelty. And why bully autocrats are so dangerous. Focusing with disgust on 8 legislators who are acting because they care for those suffering only feeds into an autocracy.

tamar's avatar

they care for a fraction for one issue what about all others who will. i be able to afford healthcare and DIE? this is the same as the single issue voters who voted this nazi into the white house

My opinion is Dems should talk to voters in the south and support their democratic candidates. Stay on message be honest and authentic and tell us why they are better than the Republicans. Honestly and authenticity goes a long way with many voters. Other voters are swayed by facts and data while others are more swayed by humanity coming from Washington.

Old Man with a Dog's avatar

None of that helps if Democrats always bow down to the power of Republicans while not even trying to negotiate!

I would like a look at the situation behind SNAP, WIC and similar programs. First and foremost, It is beyond criminal that so many people in the U.S., supposedly the richest country in the world, cannot afford to eat. Beyond increasing salaries for working people that would enable them to pay for their own food, rent and health care, there still will need to be care taken for those who cannot work for physical, mental, age, or intellectual reasons. Rather than taking from Peter [most taxpayers] to help Paul [the unable], perhaps those who are the richest in the world [multi millionaires and billionaires] could establish an ongoing fund for such disbursements. Many of them [such as Warren Buffett, Melinda Gates, etc.] already fund noteworthy causes. Perhaps "The Grocery Fund" could be another project that funnels funds directly into individual accounts, totally bypassing government.

Bernie is right about everything!

Ron Bravenec's avatar

(First, only five Senate Democrats “caved.” Two Democrats and an independent have always been for ending the shutdown.)

I was initially infuriated by the Democratic “cave,” but I have come around to at least understanding why they did.

For instance, Tim Kaine has many constituents that were having to work without pay or were furloughed. The Nevada Senators were witnessing Las Vegas tourism adversely impacted by the limits on air traffic. Etc. Their first responsibility is to their constituents, no?

Do you really believe that Trump would ever cave if the Democrats had held out? In a nutshell, you cannot negotiate with a madman who is willing to inflict increasing levels of pain on your constituents. There are no good solutions here.

Old Man with a Dog's avatar

I’m thinking that Democrats snatched defeat from the jaws of victory! A clear win and total victory in the election was squandered almost immediately. Trump was in a failing position by blocking SNAP! We lost the advantage of the win by Schumer not being able to negotiate through strength. We didn’t even get a firm date on when the “vote” on health insurance! Nor on a timeline when the new Arizona Representative would be sworn in. This appears to be total abdication of responsibility! We must replace Schumer and the gang of 8…

I disagree completely. Closing the government was never an effective strategy when you are dealing with a sociopath in the White House and sicophants on the R side of the aisle. If you think Dems were ever going to move them by continuing to hold out, you're on some weird drugs.

The lessons of the November 4th elections are not lost on Republicans or Democrats. The message has been sent. The closure period gave Democrats the time and space to show all of America, including a whole lot of independents and non-MAGA Republicans just how much cruelty has replaced constituency on the Republicans priority list. Again, message sent.

And now, with the government re-opening, every American out there is expecting a vote on the continuation of Obamacare. These invertebrates on the MAGA right will have to crawl out from under their rocks and be counted for or against providing affordable healthcare to their own constituents, and the November election shows that American voters understand that. It will make it easy for Dems in purple districts all over the country to skewer these losers on their MAGA firepits come next November.

And as an extra bonus, we get to get ahold of the Epstein files and show every, single reference (who knows, maybe even photos) to Donald Trump.

And federal workers get paychecks before Thanksgiving and Christmas. It was never, ever a smart strategy to hold out into the holiday season. Now the source of all the cruelty, the focus of the blame remains with the GOP, and Dems can hammer on that mercilessly.

Let's stop the circular firing squad and start playing all the cards this feckless Republican majority have dealt us. Exposing Republicans for the cruel grinches they are without giving them a chance to destroy Obamacare from the White House is a win for Democrats.

I am more optimistic than ever that we will bring the junta down. The November elections show us the American people have had enough of Trumpism. Now we just need to maintain their disdain through the next election cycle and we can save our democracy.

A Democratic House can tie the White House up with so many impeachment resolutions and investigations, not just Trump, but Justices Thomas and Alito for accepting bribes and against other Trump appointees. That's right, they can all be subjected to impeachment, and I look forward to giving Trump a large dose of his own legal prosecutions.

Cheer up guys. We won this one.

Schumer, known for writing "very strongly worded letters" to people who never read, has voted "no" because upfront he knew he had organized enough "yes" votes to help his "friends across the aisle".

So now schumer thinks he's off the hook, although he still has to publicly support that magnificent Mr. Mamdani.
