MD Sen Van Hollen is in El Salvador trying to speak with Kilmar Abrego Garcia. The senator has been completely blocked from doing so by the leaders of El Salvador. But why? Why are trump et al so completely, nonsensically obstructionist about bringing home this one man whom they incarcerated illegally? I’m not into conspiracy theories but the skeptical lawyer in me has to wonder whether Abrego Garcia is perhaps not publicly presentable or even no longer alive. What then?
I agree with you; never thought he'd last a week in that hell hole, but an added thought: if the corrupt admr brings this one man home, even in a box, other families will begin the legal process to bring their loved ones home, whom they will say are innocent as well. That may be playing into this unconstitutional mess as well.
I would bet that Trump was on the phone to Nayib Bukeke shortly before Senator Van Hollen arrived, warning him that if he gave in to the Senator then he would not see another dime from the US. Also, it's likely that Abrego Garcia has already met with an 'unfortunate accident'. But OTOH, since El Salvador is probably being paid monthly for each prisoner, there's incentive to keep him alive.
This is for Norm. Is there anyway to have US citizens vs. Trump and his administration in a class action suit? It could be back by all of the Americans who are suffering!
When I hear you speaking out against the genocide taking place in Gaza, it will be easier for me and I'm sure many others to take seriously your recent Passover spiritual advice and your denunciations of human rights abuses here in the US. Until then, they ring hollow.
In short, your blind spot re Israel's genocidal assault on the people of Gaza is hurting the resistance here in the US. And that’s a terrible, terrible shame.
On another happy MAGA note...Trump: "Home-growns are next". Foreign gulags for US citizens while Trump's lackeys JD, Rubio etc laugh at Trump telling Bukele that Trump wants to send American citizens to Bukele's gulag. BTW Rubio's DOS has revoked the visas of Nobel Peace Prize winner & former President of Costa Rica Oscar Arias as well as Costa Rican parliamentarians for daring to establish trade relations with China.
[Timothy Snyder Substack 4/15/25] If citizens endorse the idea that people named by authorities as "criminals" or "terrorists" have no right to due process, then they are accepting that they themselves have no right to due process. It is due process, and due process alone, that allows you to demonstrate that you are a citizen. Without it, the masked men in the black vans can simply claim that you are a foreign terrorist and disappear you. https://open.substack.com/pub/snyder/p/state-terror?r=aexlz&utm_campaign=post&utm_medium=email

Simon Rosenberg on Hopium Chronicles is having a conversation with Stuart Stevens and Rick Wilson about the magnificent letter by Harvard stating that they will not submit to Trump’s bs is dated April 15th on Substack. He also outlines what Senate and Congressional Democrats must do. He speaks of writing a letter to the American people and DJT about what he’s doing that is illegal and unconstitutional as a model for why the legal actions are being taken against him.

I am a new subscriber. How can I send an email to Jennifer Rubin?
