Mayor Rilling and Norwalk Police Chief Walsh will update the community on recent Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) activity in the City of Norwalk and how the City, Common Council Members and its community partners will continue to stand in solidarity with community members at a press conference at 12:30 PM at City Hall.
“On Thursday, August 14th, ICE agents entered the Norwalk Police Department parking lot without prior authority or consent from the Police Department or the City of Norwalk. This prompted the Police Department to direct the ICE agents to leave, as the Department had no prior knowledge of or involvement in their operations. Earlier this morning, on Friday, August 15th, ICE agents returned to the Police Department parking lot again without prior authority or consent from the Police Department or the City and the ICE agents were again prompted by the Police Department to leave the parking lot.
Serious concerns have been expressed by City officials and the community regarding tactics utilized by ICE officers, including the use of face masks, plain clothes, and unmarked vehicles, a stark contrast from the transparency and accountability traditionally practiced by the Norwalk Police Department. The tactics utilized by ICE officers do not reflect our values in the City of Norwalk and are counterintuitive to our mission of protecting our residents and treating them with the utmost care and respect. Our goal is to ensure all residents are treated with dignity and respect, regardless of anyone’s immigration status or background. The Norwalk Police Department remains a welcoming place where we encourage everyone to come to report a crime or seek protection. When crimes against immigrants go unreported, it can lead to negative consequences, including the perpetuation of criminal activity, a lack of justice for victims, and increased fear within immigrant communities. The Police Department will continue to act in accordance with the Trust ACT, which limits the information that state and local law enforcement can share with ICE and restricts the circumstances under which Connecticut police officers can cooperate with federal immigration officers.
The City of Norwalk, Common Council, and Police Department are working alongside Attorney General William Tong, Norwalk’s state delegation, and community partners to plan upcoming public forums and share resources and information on how we can protect the community.”
Pete Hegseth's statements are clearly a return to the violence of the Lost Cause Narrative where the South was reimagined as gallant and full of compassion for their "loyal slaves." (read the original description of the statue and philosophy) What is really true is that the Jim Crow Years only deepened the need for "the happy slaves" to put on faces that masked their anger and pain, for safety and survival. The female enslaved were frequently abused, used for their product: babies to be sold into slavery and fathered by whites on the plantation, and nursing white babies instead of their own. They were products and property. It is said that when a enslaved person said their mistress was kind to them, it really meant she treated them as a human being, still without freedom or agency, still property like a cow or a wagon. Shame on Hegseth for holding up this era of history as something he is willing to fight for, like any good 'ol White Supremacist who forgets that it was erected during Jim Crow Days of terror for blacks, it's purpose? to remind Blacks to know their place... or else.
