"These are the Times that Try Men's Souls"

Trump's ability to stretch the powers of the Presidency far beyond the starting point of authoritarian rule is attributable to a single safeguard that has failed the American people - the U.S. Supreme Court, where his far-right wing ideological bedfellows have ignored well-established precedents and twisted reason and logic out of all proportion to justify his abuses of the Constitutional and Congressional powers conferred upon him.

Today, the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals, in affirming a lower court decision, held in an en banc 7-4 decision that enough is enough and ruled that his imposition of sweeping and massive worldwide tariffs exceeded his authority, though they stopped short of issuing a prohibition to allow Trump to appeal to his 5 willing enablers on the Supreme Court.

At least 3 of these enablers can be expected to follow their usual pattern of first deciding to uphold whatever Trump does and then engaging in the most contortionist perversions of logic to attempt to justify their preconceived decisions.

The future of our democracy will then rest upon whether or not the remaining two Justices will do their duty.

Really great reporting on labor unions today. A great reminder of how they are important in preserving democracy and the quality of life for so many American workers. Thanks Jen for bringing the history of labor unions to The Contrarian. Hope everyone has a great labor day holiday!

Not sure where to write this comment, so I will just put it here and then repeat in more relevant places. I think that the key to getting rid of Trump and Maga will be election security. It is clear that Trump plans to utilise intimidation tactics to keep away voters at the polls, in addition to the disenfranchisement efforts by attempting to eliminate mail in voting, direct fraud by trying to get rid of voting machine counting, among other measures and, of course, redistricting. A huge legal effort will be required.

In respect of the intimidation, I would hope that State governments are looking at their ability to keep ICE officers away from the polls. More generally, can a constitutional challenge be successful in keeping ICE officers away - this is crucial for election integrity in Red States, which will not take action to keep them away.

Why have we heard nothing about other States following California's lead to gerrymander?

countries are forming common-interest groups across the world to find ways to reduce their exposure to Trump's America and to work on the old rules-based trade order. Also, the world postal services stop sending parcels to the US

Refrain.

See you in September in DC.

Congress returns. There are many issues we can use to convince a few Congressional Republicans. Brian Fitzpatrick is a case study.

Pressure them directly, their donors, families, social friends etc. Picket. Sit in.

Proportionally 4 x more crime in MAGA Mike's home town than in DC. Memphis is the most crimeridden city in the US. Jackson, Mississippi! Bessemer, AL!

Interview the National Guardsmen. Odds are more crime at home.
