Please let Norm know - I just finished The Last Palace. Absolutely amazing, rich with history, culture, politics, hardships and hope. Norm is a man of many talents!!
Justin Wolfers interview with Jen was a bit sobering. This economy has been schizophrenic to say the least. His sentiment is totally understandable and Happy Birthday 🎈Justin!
Unlike medical doctors, psychologists and psychiatrists must make diagnoses without any physical evidence. They make an evaluation appraising a constellation of behavioral patterns, a spectrum or constellation of behavior consistently observed in a specific pattern or grouping.
Trump has given us clear behaviors that provide enough material for straightforward observations and judgments. We’re often told we’re not psychiatrists and can’t diagnose. But all psychiatrists do is observe a patient's actions, and their assessments usually last only a short time. In contrast, we’ve had the chance to see him in different situations, and I believe he shows traits of both sociopathic and narcissistic disorders.
If you think of the Star Trek character Spock, you get an idea of someone with no emotional connection to others; a sociopath is similar. They can leave relationships without feeling any discomfort, use people, and then move on without emotion. Sociopaths are classified under ASPD, which is an “antisocial personality disorder” that shows “a consistent disregard for others, lack of empathy and remorse, and often manipulating or exploiting people using charm or deceit, as well as being a pathological liar. Another definition is “Sociopaths (antisocial personality disorder) are driven by a disregard for laws, rules, and others' feelings, often showing impulsivity, lack of remorse, and exploiting people for pleasure or gain.”
Sounds familiar?
Narcissistic personality disorder involves a persistent pattern of grandiosity (either in fantasy or behavior), a need for admiration, and a lack of empathy. It includes a grandiose sense of self-importance (e.g., exaggerating achievements and talents), being preoccupied with fantasies of unlimited success, power, brilliance, beauty, or perfect love. They believe they are “special” and can only be understood by other special or high-status people. They require excessive admiration and have a sense of entitlement (i.e., unreasonable expectations of especially favorable treatment). They often take advantage of others to achieve their own goals. They lack empathy or are unwilling to recognize or understand others' feelings and needs. They are often envious of others or believe that others are envious of them. They display arrogant, haughty behaviors or attitudes.” Source: Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 5th Edition
Again, this is an easy observation.
As of today, there are no tests to identify either a sociopath or a narcissistic disorder, but there is discussion about the possibility that these conditions are related to some form of genetic control, meaning that people with these conditions may be the result of chromosomal coding. This
It is an age-old question of nature versus nurture. Is this condition the result of natural causes or environmental causes?
More research has been conducted on incarcerated psychopaths. James Fallon discusses his findings in his book, The Psychopath Inside, where he states that he himself is a borderline psychopath. His work as a neuroscientist used PET scans to examine the brains of psychopaths, leading to the identification of distinct patterns associated with them.
I believe more evidence is accumulating that confirms the link between behavior and genetic coding. Years ago, I recall working with the parents of a child who had schizophrenia and was faced with the then-common belief that this condition was caused by harmful childcare. Now we understand that this condition is related to the insufficient production of specific chemicals.
In forty years of working as a psychologist, the only sociopaths I encountered were those referred by their wives under the duress of divorce. Sociopaths and narcissists never go into therapy; they never think they need assistance.
My own opinion is that they, along with other diagnosed conditions, are caused by genetic malfunctioning, which includes those suffering from severe depression and obsessive-compulsive disorders. I don't know what Trump will do when he is removed from office. One thing I know is that he will never go to jail; he will escape to one of the countries that have supported him.
I enjoyed the Howard University and Jackie Robinson posts. Black history is American history.
