As a Vietnam vet, may I ask everyone to avoid wishing us--anyone else, for that matter--a "happy Memorial Day." There is nothing happy about remembering one's fallen comrades.

The fact that so many offer such wishes is a reminder of how much we are separating ourselves from the realities which we presumably honor.

May I at least acknowledge and thank you for your service and your sacrifice.

Thank you for thanking me.

Thanks for speaking up. This three-day weekend at the start of summer maybe ought to be set up with a different holiday or commemoration. Let Memorial Day be what it is and give it a designated date, instead of the rolling last Monday of May.
