As I listened to your interview, I thought, no, they are not targeting the worst of the worst, they are targeting the poorest of the poor. I speak as someone who knows Chicago. And the poorest neighborhoods in Chicago are Black neighborhoods, which is not to say all Black neighborhoods are poor. So the immigration raids are affecting Black residents whose neighbors are extremely vulnerable immigrants, like Venezuelans, who landed there because they have to live somewhere.
Chicago is highly segregated by race. Latinos live closer to white areas of the city. It seems the feds are doing their dirty work in Black areas further away. Will they dare to engage in raids on the northside where I live?
Arresting immigrant families in Millennium Park is another matter. Millennium Park is a gem for all to enjoy and a magnet for the middle class. This seems similar to the intent of recent patrols of federal agents, wearing masks and toting guns, downtown. The aim is to intimidate people like me and also to communicate that I am safe because I am white. I reject that.
What is going on in Chicago is very disconcerting for this resident. I usually feel safe here, but not now with federal agents cracking down on citizens. I appreciate intelligent reporting that helps me understand. Perhaps you can find someone to interview who is an activist or politician here. I know Latino leadership is galvanized. Black leaders should be as well since this is about white supremacy more than immigration.
What a great guy, Espina! Thank you for this interview. I agree about Beta O'Rourke, who's been putting out a lot of good energy for years and now Texans ( and we) have James Talarico trying to set people straight about real Christianity. Bravo.
What would it take for a massive class action against ice? Banding together democratic states to sue them or individually so they are state charges and can’t be pardoned by Trump
Glad you had Carlos on again, Jen. As I Texan in a very much Mexican-American city, I was surprised and disappointed that so many voters joined Trump because he so obviously is racist. I definitely would not want to see the ugly ICE raids here. And grabbing people at courthouse immigration appointments is too low.
Here in my red county of NC, an undocumented Latino woman on the cleaning staff has no fear of being deported. She is in the process of getting her papers and believes that she is safe. The vibe was that she likes Trump and believes those "illegal alien criminals" are getting what they deserved - unlike her.
It's hard not to shrug in response and think why am I bothering? And of course the answer is because how we treat our fellow human beings matters.
Thank you Jen and Carlos! Can't say enough how much I agree that the 'Christian' narrative that ignores the care for our neighbors is in direct violation of all the teachings of Jesus and everything Paul wrote. Glad to see Carlos call that out, and stand for compassion and justice for All!
I also think that the grabbing of people "is the worst part of everything that's going on". People with guns and camouflaged faces and vests storming in and arresting people is absolutely not the America we want. Whether they wear camo or black shirts or brown shirts or swastikas or maga flags - it is all the same and we should never stand for it, not because the targeted are our co workers or neighbors, but because it is WRONG on all levels, legal, moral and religious. Kudos to Espina, Beto O'Rourke, and Pope Leo.
ICE has become a domestic terrorist organization. Thanks to Kristi Noem, Trumpty Dumpty, Stephen Miller and Tom Homan.

I love these conversations with Carlos! I really appreciate his perspective.

Separation of church and state

I always like hearing from Carlos Eduardo Espina ... he speaks smartly, from the heart and with truth.

Good "answer is."
I wish we could clone Carlos to reach the young Latino voters who are disenchanted with Trump yet not taken in by democrats yet
Thank you for this great interview!
He gives me hope too! Keep the faith!

Thank you for this interview!!! How can we help?
