I dunno. Without a doubt umpires are not perfect, but human error (missed calls, wrong calls, etc) is just part of the game. I'm pretty sure they don't favor one team over another, and especially in football and to a somewhat lesser degree in basketball they slow up an already slow and fragmented game.
I say get rid of challenges and just play the damned game.
I prefer the local color that real-live umps provide. I figure that the odds mean it all works out for both sides equally in the long run. I suspect it is the gambling industry that wants this. Cha-ching!
