Wonderful appreciation of Jesse Jackson and our pluralist society. On the SAVE act independent of the fundamental objections is the tactical urgency. Any implementation of it for the 2026 elections(which is the provision of the bill) would inevitably provide the means for Trump to wreck them — procedural chaos that would result in endless challenges and deligitimize its results. precisely... any act to make votes more secure- not needed apparently- needs to be implemented over a long period of time, maybe a year or two. whereby governments and voters have a chance get their docs- one way or another. The urgency is blatantly political.

And access to any required documents needs to be easy and free! Otherwise, it's another means to keep the poor who can't afford to take off from work and don't have reliable transportation are being targeted. If it's required to vote, it needs to be free!

The information that one's ability to vote is at stake needs plenty of time and loudness, notice. As well the voting process needs to be free of intimidation.

Just called my Senators AGAIN to oppose the SAVE Act and doing so to honor Jesse Jackson’s great legacy…

Thank you for your diligence. This act is a violation of our civil rights and must not be allowed.

Any support for the government working with Donald Trump is support for pedophilia, perversion, corruption, and violence.

Please include in your reasoning against the SAVE Act that it would essentially disenfranchise millions of overseas voters. I live in France, and will not be able to register to vote in person. Also, I understand that the Act requires proof of residency in the state where one votes. That goes directly against the the Uniformed and Overseas Citizens Voters Act (UOCAVA) which gives citizens who live overseas the right to vote.

Thank you for pointing this out. No matter where we are, our citizens should have the right and ability to vote. This has not been made clear enough. This mis-named SAVE act creates a violation of our civil rights.

It’s hard to believe how low the U.S. government has sunk. The president, the House and the Senate even the Supreme Court. It’s like 10 steps forward and 15 backwards. The south is essentially still one party rule only it has flipped the other way. We must right the wrongs of today and reject fascism and totally be in their faces about it. RIP Jesse Jackson.

President Reagan's words are more true today than they were when he spoke them: "I'm from the government and am here to help". Right now, the government is not serving the people well. Tariffs that raise prices, cutting social services (food, healthcare, education) sanctioning murder of our citizens, (ICE, CBP, DHS), refusing to prosecute violations of the law (Dept. of Justice), threatening the upcoming election, attacking free speech - the list goes on and on. In Rev. Jackson's words, "our time is now" to protest and work to remove this scourge from our civil rights and freedoms.

Please do NOT call it “The SAVE Act”, instead call it something more like “The SAVE white supremacy Act” or the “MAGA SAVE America for us Act” or “SAVE America for Whites Act” or “the SAVE GOP Act”. We can not inadvertantly just accept the Republican branding which they have foisted on us again and again in a dishonest and un-truthful way over the past many decades. And please pass this on to other journalists across America and around the world. There are very few average American citizens who would support “Citizens United” or that believe the Clear Skies is about removing pollution or cleaning up the natural environment or that the Peace Keeper Missile would actually do that. The GOP has been great at one thing, tricking us into believing things that we should not.

Exactly!! Whether naming a bill, responding to a straightforward question, or claiming to be Christian, the ‘Guardians of Pedophiles’ (GOP) consistently spin the message to obscure the true nature of their goals. They are guided by their lust for money, power and wealth. Wolves in sheep's clothing.

Thank you for this reminder of Mr. Jackson's remarkable life and legacy. If you don't know Rev. William Barber and Jonathan Wilson-Hartgrove-- and the Poor People's Campaign, they are absolutely with a follow.

I weep, thinking that Jesse Jackson will be one more important person excised from American history textbooks unless we act to stop this “white-wash.”

Some of your finest and most passionate writing. Thank you.

People are and need to continue to raise holy hell about that SAVE act. Burn those senators phones up. Do not obey.

We have much to do this year. The roadmap back to a democracy includes electing competent new leaders. We need to flip a significant number of State Legislatures. We need to win not just the House, but the Senate as well. The laundry list of necessary actions to rein in the Oligarchy and prevent another tRump is lengthy, at best.

A strong message this morning that should be acknowledged by every American!

We should never have put aside our Nation's motto: e pluribus unam. That gave us a vision - dim, perhaps, but we WERE working on it. Now? It's just a second thought that the white supremacists running the country, are eager to erase.

I have repeatedly called upon my congressional representative about the SAVE Act, but he repeatedly tells me it is to "protect" the vote from all those illegals. He is attached, remora-like to the backside of the short-fingered vulgarian. My Senators will reject it. Maybe Chuck will even write another "strongly worded letter." I don't have much hope but sometimes, life surprises.

Your congressional representative is sorely misguided. Illegals, as he calls them, already don't have the right to vote and don't. This individual should be voted out of office and replaced with someone with some education and intelligence.

Ellie still in the mix in 26's avatar

There is little chance that NY23 will be "represented" by anyone but a Republican. However, the Democratic candidates have gotten closer the last couple of elections.

Calling him "sorely misguided" is...much more polite than I generally am. He has done three good things since he was elected. But he quotes from the Script From On High, and will not deviate in any matter of importance. He has no shame.

Steve 218's avatar

Eh, could have said "stupid eejit" but there's no use repeating what he is.

Robert Lastick's avatar

"Education and intelligence" are scarce commidities everywhere now a days.

Steve 218's avatar

Oh, these characteristics do exist, though sadly, aren't actively practiced by the current political regime.
