Uh, no. They were deployed because so-called "peaceful protesters" surrounded ICE agents and their facility, placing them in harm's way. California state law prevents law enforcement from assisting unless the federal agents are actually assaulted. The Guard and Marines were called in to protect federal personnel and facilities. Now if you have any evidence that any federal forces assaulted the protesters first, let us know.

Again, no. In very basic terms, the military is meant to offer deterrence to those who would wish to harm this country. Should deterrence fail and our forces are ordered into combat, their mission is to hurt people and break stuff. The "promote justice" thing is for civil government.

So does every elected and non-elected member of government at all levels.

The response also reflects some rhetoric from the Trump administration, and does not reflect California's state rights. Our Governor and the Mayor of Los Angeles did not ask for help. And definitely did not request ICE to enter our state or our city. Yes, some protestors are easily agitated (and as I am from the SanFrancisco 60's demonstrations, some of the law enforcement also can become agitated and provocative). In any case, according to all reports on the ground, the demonstrators were being controlled by the local police. The big agitation came from deploying and federalizing the National Guard and the Marines. Be clear, Hal, about all the facts.

To repeat, the National Guard was called in by Trump to protect ICE agents and their facility, not to engage with protesters.
