I think it's consequential that Peter Hegseth just cancelled MKL and other black recognition days for the military. Does this fall under DEI? Or is he just flaunting his bigotry? Or am I missing something?

Jane in NC's avatar

The MLK national holiday was signed into law by Ronald Reagan. Hegseth doesn't have the authority to violate a federal law. This is a bigotry flex from the DayDrunk.

Anne-Louise Luccarini's avatar

So what do we do about it? Ignore, and keep MLK Day as always.

Jane in NC's avatar

Yes. That's precisely what we should do. And also don't forget to make noise about the racist, bigoted actions being taken by The Felon's administration to ignore the history of millions of Americans.

ArcticStones's avatar

Hegseth is flaunting his DUI – clearly showing us "defense policy under the influence".

Defense Under the Influence! You are brilliant my friend!

He is pumping up his chest and following Trump's advice. His bigotry is indeed showing, and no one is even making an attempt to hide it. When is he going to fire Admiral Dr. Rachel Levine, assistant secretary of Health and Human Services. I'm sure that is high on his agenda.

Anti-DEI is christian nationalism, not to be confused with Christianity. The christian nationalist ideology is akin to Nazism. Robert P. Jones adds “white” to the name, underscoring the racial aspect of the ideology but it also excludes women from leadership positions.

Janina Fenigsen's avatar

Right. The Nazis had Gott mit uns on their belt buckles. On a more cheerful note, not that it helped them

Democrats should denounce the dangers of DEI – Trumpian DEI, that is. And what might this be? Trump’s DEI is placing Don Jr, Eric and Ivanka in positions for which they are not remotely qualified!

Teresa Baustian's avatar

Im not sure that using DEI in our comments about the administration appointments will correct the public perception. It would underscore a perception that DEI means unqualified.

Jane in NC's avatar

Indeed! We should denounce every one of The Felon's Didn't Earn It hires.

This stuff is tough to take.

Why aren't Fox et al being sued ala Dominion into oblivion?

Why hasn't Musk been sued for voter intimidation, election interference? After all, Trump admits he stole the Pennsylvania election.

I just wanna say thank you for the creation of Contrarian. The way it has happened and has evolved has made me grateful and secure in getting my information from a place that tells the truth by so many people. Thank you.

The common lexicon is critical. We must all speak and reinforce with the same phrases and slogans. My question is that we face a common foe of psychopathic neo-fascists. I have worked hard to promote the correct name for our foe: psychopathic neo-fascists. Thom Hartmann made a strong marketing point this morning. Marketing is the activity, set of institutions, and processes for creating, communicating, delivering, and exchanging offerings that have value for customers, clients, partners, and society at large. If we want to gather and convince our voters of the value offered in our candidate and the platform, we must market with skill, integrity, and unified voices driving home the benefits that we envision and that we promise. Our hardest task before us is the need to rouse the DNC. I believe it needs reconstruction. What do you think? https://hotbuttons.substack.com/p/i-will-call-the-dnc-today?r=3m1bs

I watched the hearing with JFK Jr. and was so angry at the GOP who kissed his ass. He is lying, and you can tell from his body language. He has changed his opinion on vaccinations and abortion within the last couple of weeks, and just in time for this hearing. He was fidgety and sweating the entire interview, and popped something from his pocket into his mouth. That could mean nothing, but he wasn't as fidgety after (just my observation and opinion, so it should be starting false narrative). He can not be trusted! I am concerned about Roger Fetterer's change of direction, and this could cause some problems in these unfit nominees.

This week has given Dems a PROactive opportunity to highlight the importance of a well-resourced, competent, professional federal workforce. We obviously don’t know the cause(s) of the DC crash…we DO know air traffic controllers have been sounding the alarm for years. Chaos, flip flopping, complete ignorance combined with arrogance…no way to run a country. My letter to editor project is growing as I am seeing other TX papers pick them up more. I hope one or two readers will find them useful in their state…copy and paste away if/as you wish. Latest: https://docs.google.com/document/d/13AWtKKoz_B_PdM3IITP-j4GL5N6sUQsp56vifHKuOkA/edit

The aviation press has been predicting something like this would likely happen around DCA. The airspace is crazy busy and congested. Back in August, Enilria (airline blog on Substack) brought this very problem up again, fearing that there would be a collision.

I tend to read my news and not get it from television and I prefer not to have to listen to news on my phone to get my news.

I wish more of the Contrarian's content was written instead of podcasts.

Today we are asked to commit acts of “resistance” to Trump’s and the Executive Branch’s horrific attack on our democracy: write your Senator, donate to “this” social justice organization, donate to “this” legal nonprofit-organization fighting in the courts, get involved in our local politics, support our local media, join “this” or “that” resistance group, run for office, talk to your neighbors, join a community group and so on.

Meanwhile, we we seem to be inept and totally ineffective bystanders witnessing the blatant illegal and horrifying actions of Donald Trump, Gina and Clarence Thomas, Aileen Cannon, and hundreds of other actors, who brazenly and shamelessly succeed in openly breaking our laws and putting our lives in danger (e.g., pardoning the January 6th violent felons who attacked our police officers) and openly throwing our country into the pit of a tyrannical autocracy.

Our mainstream media is flailing, disinformation is rampant on social media. There are glaring major inherent problems in our voting system (e.g., unlimited monies in politics, gerrymandering, the electoral college). Our justice system is failing us.

Heather Cox Richardson says we should use our voices—our voices matter. But I’m not feeling that way.

Attorneys are openly getting away with not upholding their oath to the law. These attorneys are doing so in the service of Trump’s effort to avoid accountability for his corruption, crimes, and most dangerously—his becoming a dictator. Bar Associations should be actively disbarring these offenders.

Bottom line: the Justices in our Supreme Court are not upholding our Constitution (as well as some openly breaking multiple laws). Every time we learn that a court has blocked Trump’s illegal action, we know that will be appealed, and we know we cannot depend on this court to follow the laws of our Constitution.

We need a method or a strategy to make our bellowing voices so loud that we cannot be drowned out nor ever ignored again.

I subscribed to this publication because I wanted to support independent press. I expected something in a newsletter or a newspaper format. I can hardly read what you write because I find it so unengaging. I have already paid and I want to support you, but I really don’t like your publication.

My favorites for news are Robert Hubbell-Today’s Edition, Simon Rosenberg-Hopium Chronicles, Joyce Vance-Civil Discourse, George Takei-The Big Picture (multiple authors), Jim Acosta. Jim is just getting started here after leaving CNN. You can also subscribe to preeminent voting rights attorney Marc Elias Democracy Docket. I cancelled NYT and WaPo months ago. I don’t watch TV and have no cable subscription either. Sometimes I check The Guardian for international news. I pay monthly.

I think your comment is insulting and unproductive. I expressed my opinion as a way for a new publication to improve.

Does anyone know what that bastard Trump actually said about Pete Buttigieg this morning? The Washington Post is reporting that he used a "profanity" but of course is engaging in self-censorship by not reporting it. Thanks.

Can anyone on the Contrarian today clarify what is going on with the "freeze"? The memo was rescinded but the White Says the "freeze" is still on. I assume this means without the now embarrassing exceptions like Medicaid. So what funding is being "paused".

Love the new format with fewer emails and links that offer choices. Thank you.

Why don't we just say it? The groups of citizens targeted for consideration under DEI, in order to redress centuries of repressive bias, include: women (over 50% of the population), people of color (also soon to be the majority of the population) and non-Christians, also, if you include people who don't attend church, a majority of the population. So, friends, isn't it amazing that Straight White Evangelical Men aren't the target of DEI? Ha ha. Thinkaboudit.

Today 2/5 news comes of release of thousands of USAID workers in posts across the world. There is no indication of any planning on how to get them all home. Are there funds to cover the transportation of these workers? What of other accommodations for them as they await these arrangements?

It just looks like the action was taken to release them and now they are working backwards to figure out how it gets done. All these humanitarian workers. Abandoned. It is dizzying. This is no way to treat the workers and especially not the areas they work at trying to provide relief.

On this day I feel shame at being an American.
