I've got news: threats and retribution and violence will never quash dissent, only increase the dissatisfaction that fuels it. This is why we use diplomacy, at home and abroad. The only way to promote a civil society is to be civil.
Your post is more than grim. I could hardly read it without seeing our beautiful country in absolute destruction. There has been nothing good from this regime and I expect more of the same. I’m ’beside myself’ thinking about EU heroically coming to Ukraine’s needs (in our absence), our military being withdrawn (!!!!) and NATO becoming incredibly less-than. And Zelenskyy giving up hopes of NATO. I mean, what the heck are those of us civilians supposed to do/think? I’m of an age where I think I’ll not be here for any rebuilding ….. very sad. The administration cut ICE training times for new officers and loosened hiring standards, then touted the bigger classes as proof of a tougher line on immigration. What mattered was not whether the forces in uniform were better prepared but that the numbers and the footage could be sold as “strength.”
The reason why training times was less is because they were in a hurry to get ICE out in the cities that they claimed were burning. Hiring standards were cut because after the felon pardoned the seditionists, many joined ICE but most couldn't pass the hiring standards so the standards were lowered.
ICE has become a terrorist organization under Noem that stated that ICE were patriots, protecting their community from rapists, child sex traffickers, and keeping women safe.
But they go around masked to avoid recognition for illegally breaking down doors then dragging people out of their homes, arresting peaceful protesters or committing violence against people of color to avoid facing criminal charges for committing violent crimes against otters.
"The United States ends 2025 with formidable national security instruments intact." You realize, don't you, that your opening sentence is contradicted by the entire remainder of the article.
National security should be a priority in this country. No matter how formidable a military is we should always strive for keeping within the constitution any time a decision is made to take a strike at another country. We should have a DoD secretary who follows the constitution and not a president who is a wannabe dictator.
