The importance of No Kings Day cannot be overstated.* Neither can the significance of America’s 250th birthday. On the morning after the 2024 election I had two thoughts: (1) How could this have happended? (2) This man will be President on July 4th, 2026. He’ll make that day all about himself-writ-large. He’ll try to make it about all the wars he’s ended, all the criminals he’s deported, all the government waste he’s eliminated. The Nobel he deserved. These and other lies. We can’t let this happen.
In 1775 American patriots began a revolution against a mentally-ill tyrannical monarch. Russell Vought has crafted a counter-revolution which desecrates all that our founding revolutionaries fought for. We can’t let this happen. On July 4th 2026, shouldn’t we patriots for democracy provide a show of opposition that dwarfs anything this president plans? We need enormous protests in the two cities most identified with our revolution against the oppressive British monarchy: in Boston, where many of the events which preceded the start of the American Revolution took place, and in Philadelphia, where our independence was proclaimed. Yes, the National Mall ought to be covered with No More Kings supporters and signs. But ‘he’ may try to commandeer that site. Let’s pre-empt MAGA rallies in Boston and in Philadelphia with alternative events. Protest gatherings and parades with marching bands and decorated bicycles and costumed processioners and chanting. The kind of patriot-day events once held in towns and cities all over the country, made contemporary by the young organizers and leaders in our front ranks. We need a spectacular kick-off for the November 2026 election. Let July 4, 2026 herald the rescue of our democracy. We cannot yield this day to Donald J. Trump.
* It was dismaying that neither Obama nor Clinton saw fit to attend a No Kings event. Although the protests targeted actions of the current president, these were not at root partisan events. They were about priveleging democracy over authoritarinism.
Thanks for posting this joyful and inspiring event Contrarians! I agree with Jonathan there needs to be more people there and more younger people. Though Trumps insanity regime affects everyone in every age group and generation it is empowering to see people of all ages.
