I'm butting in here to report that state Rep. Melissa Hortman and her husband Mark, were killed this morning in what Sen. Amy Klobuchar, calls a political assassination. And, a few miles away, state Senator John Hoffman and his wife Yvette, were shot multiple times and wounded, and have been hospitalized. All NO KINGS day protests in Minnesota were cancelled because the gunman, who has been identified but not apprehended, and who was dressed as a policeman, had lots of NO KINGS DAY flyers in his car, as well as a list of other politicians.

I'm not writing about this to suggest people stay away from today's protests, but just as a warning...so that you're careful. In Los Angles, people were bringing children and dogs to protests, which I felt was dangerous, because police were shooting rubber bullets, and earlier, ICE agents were using tear gas to disperse crowds. Good luck! Stay safe!

Rallies continued in MN in spite of political violence last night. That should be a reason for even more people to turn out to resist this radical republican regime.

SBwrites's avatar

Glad that people turned out. I’m extra careful these days, because in the late sixties and early seventies, I attended peaceful anti-war demonstrations, where people ended up getting shot. It didn’t stop me from going then, but I’ve been having nightmares about it lately.

Coelle Baskel's avatar

Just know the gunman was dressed as a police office!!!!

SBwrites's avatar

The man's name is Vance Boelter. He's 57, and he's been targeting politicians who support abortions. There's a long article on this in the Minneapolis Star Tribune online. It's free, but I can't copy the link.

Martian2024's avatar

Very sad and so sorry for this cruel and horrific killings.RIP

SBwrites's avatar

It's unbelievable, and they had two children! I guess a number of other Democratic legislators now have police watching their houses. One of their senators, Tina Smith, wrote an Op Ed piece today, saying she won't be running for reelection in 2026 so she can spend more time with her family. I hope that's the real reason, and it's not about death threats!

A doc reads's avatar

What can we do to support her?

A doc reads's avatar

Dear God!

Massachusetts is holding Minnesota close in our hearts.

SBwrites's avatar

I don't know if there is anything that can be done. I live across the country, my adult son heard it on a podcast, and I just wanted to spread the word. It is so very sad! I just heard on PBS that most of the protests were peaceful.

Hi from Australia! The Guardian (Australia version) has a link to its US sister version of the Guardian, so plenty of material there, but the Australian Guardian link is small, and under a much larger headline about the Minnesota shootings.

Little or nothing on the Fairfax papers (Sydney Morning Herald, Melbourne Age, Brisbane Times), like the Australian Broadcasting Corporation but hopefully more as the Australian editors receive reports from non-DC journalists in the US.

But on Twitter/X the top Tweet on the SMH reports that 17 hours ago "US marines detain first civilian in LA before expected ‘unprecedented’ protests". Hopefully they'll update soon. The Age reports the Minnesota shooting.

Waiting for updates on TV bulletins.

Interesting to hear that the skies are raining on DC. There was a double rainbow over Buckingham Palace when Queen Elizabeth passed. Just saying!

You mean Dump! We love you Canada. Thanks for your support.

Thanks for the encouraging words. It's good to know all Canadians don't hate us and they realize a huge portion of our citizens despise FOTUS too!

SueJ's avatar

We had a good group from Windsor attend the Detroit rally! 🇺🇸❤️🇨🇦

Thanks for the support from our wonderful neighbor to the north. Clearly, the orange faced lunatic was running his mouth about making Canada the 51st state just to get attention. This is another one of the numerous shiny nickels he regularly throws out like Mardi Gras beads in hopes that people won't remember his failures during the early months of his regime/junta and they have been numerous. I attended a No Kings rally today where I live in Lake Charles, LA and we had about 200 in spite of the rain. Know that not all of us have completely lost our minds and we are committed to restoring our country to decency, sanity and justice.

LYNN COOK's avatar

Such kind thoughtful words, Stephen.

God Bless you, kind sir....happy you were safe with friends.👏👏

Linda Weide's avatar

We should demand that Stephen Miller be sacked.

Pam Birkenfeld's avatar

On another substack, someone said Stephen Miller said two dem polititians should be killed in each state do the rest are scared.

Linda Weide's avatar

Yes. So we need to call fr the removal of a government that is inciting people to violence. We should be demanding Steve Miller be removed from the government.

Linda Weide's avatar

Stephen Miller should be sacked.

Maybe the Pope’s presence is a harbinger of better days but keeping safe and standing our ground is important.

I hope all is well in your lovely state. I have some friends who live in Boston but have a lake house Unity, ME and I've stayed there the last couple of years. I'll be there next month and am so looking forward to it. Your governor is a true patriot and her win in the courts against the orange faced menace was delicious.

Sounds much more uplifting than what is planned in Austin, Texas, but my body/soul/spirit need to be at the Texas State Capitol (where Governor Abbott is massing forces and has closed access to bathrooms! )

Just wear a pad & you'll be all set.

Thank you for protesting under such tragic circumstances. Minnesotans' courage and patriotism are a model for all of us

Governor Abbott is having trouble mobilizing 5,000 National Guard troops to send to San Antonio - borrowed 2500 from his Operation Lone Star boondoggle on the border.

National Guard members expressed their own thoughts and the beauty of truth -

"It doesn't make any sense to me why we would be activated in such large numbers against the citizens we're sworn to protect."

""Did I swear an oath to the president? Did I swear an oath to the governor? Or did I swear an oath to our basic, inalienable rights?

The deployment strikes me as a suppression of free speech ahead of time. We should never have been mobilized in the first place."

Irena's avatar

To whom did these National Guards express their thoughts?

Phyllis Logan's avatar

The San Antonio Express News reported "The National Guard Members told the Statesman" and "spoke on the condition of anonymity because they are not authorized to speak to the media."

Irena's avatar

Thank you. If only media personnel were so quick to answer questions :)

Use good judgment, watch out for provocateurs and Republican terrorists, be kind to any cops you meet along the way (they're just doing their jobs, albeit sometimes not very well), display your very best all-American manners: and be there. Stand up for your country while you still can.
