Having a son who, with his mixed family, lives in NC, and having worked in the state, I would point out that many of the people there still use the word "boy". They often don't use the word to describe a male child.
When interacting with folks in NC, hospitality is wonderful, but conditional. More than once, I've had the Civil War tossed in my face, unprompted, with the comment, "The score is 3-0 at halftime.
We are born and bred civil Wisconsin folk. I prefer to stay away from NC unless absolutely necessary.
It’s unfortunate that you stereotype all North Carolinians. There are racists everywhere including Wisconsin. Wisconsin has the highest rate of incarceration of black people in the country according to a recent study. People in Charlotte and Raleigh banded together in huge numbers to protect and feed their Hispanic neighbors. It would be more helpful for us to talk about how we end discrimination in this country rather than demonizing an entire state.
Please don't put words in my mouth. I've only related my personal experiences. The article speaks well to North Carolinians, rightly so. But I have experienced the old ugliness there as well, enough to shock my sensibilities. My home state has its own uglies, but not the flavor I found in NC. There are things about my son's family I will not air, but suffice it to say it only reinforces my opinion of the people there.
I don't know where you were but NC is primarily populated by transplants, many from the NE, and has been for decades so the behavior you are describing would be quite unusual and not the norm. Wisconsin likely has as many racists as NC. Talk about white on white.

We are not putting words in your mouth. We are correcting the incorrect & unfair picture YOU are painting about NC.

Not a good look, Gov Stein. You need to step up NOW.
