Well, it sho ain't women's history either. Mister doesn't think we should be able to vote. For a guy who didn't run for his position, that's a safe, chickenshit slur.

And not just any "white people", but white Anglo-Saxon Protestants. Remember that the KKK doesn't consider Jews or Catholics to be "white", and in the early twentieth century, it was Jewish, Irish, and Italian immigrants who were considered to be undesirable "aliens" by white Protestant Americans.

Well, as long as he's setting America up, with controversial statues, to teach its inglorious past, now it's up to us to take advantage of the opportunity and run with it. How 'bout placing your column on a plaque next to the statue to get the ball rolling so we all know what to really teach. Might as well show newcomers what this statue is really about, instead of hiding it...

Then it will be up to them to decide, after a few more items describing sad times are posted alongside the challenge. My guess: Hegseth has done us a big favor in providing the teaching opportunity of a lifetime. Perhaps he thought he was going to succeed in shoving his notions down our throats. Now it's up to us. I'm betting on us to show the rest of us, the America we admire, not the only the tragic side we've somehow managed to survive, this far, at least. Not overlooking all who died, both under the old ways and fighting for the new. Keeping my fingers crossed.

"When he says “we recognize our history,” the “we” is white people recognizing their history in this country." Actually, the "we" are White Christian Nationalists, KKK and Nazis. The "we" are the insurrectionists who attacked the Capital on January 6, 2021 and those who abetted/incited those insurrectionists like the Felon.

You are exactly right.

What conservatives, especially Southern conservatives, can't seem to get through their concrete skulls is that the Confederacy was a foreign government who declared war on the United States. I can't recall any monuments or military bases dedicated to German, Japanese, etc. military leaders. That's because we don't memorialize enemies.

The Civil War wasn't a family squabble as Southerners seem to want to characterize it, and they also seem to forget that, if it wasn't for Lincoln, they would have suffered severe repercussions as the spoils of war. They should be grateful for that and be at least ashamed enough by their legacy to recognize the foolishness of their pride in being former enemies of the US.

The Fugitive Slave Act forced the “free” Northern states to enforce slavery. So yes, the Civil War was essentially the Southern states trying to impose slavery throughout the US. It is easy to imagine what the US would be like if the Confederacy had won and had passed federal laws preventing all states from abolishing slavery. I doubt that women would have the right to vote. Indeed, discrimination would be required and there would be no equal rights. Perhaps there would be no right to vote at all. Imagine the US being established as a Christian Nation ruled by clerics & biblical law — similar to the Islamic Republics ruled by Imans and the State of Israel ruled by Orthodox Rabbis. That is what Vance, Hegseth, Doug Wilson and others are promoting.

Hegseth is toxic to the military and the women who are working under him. He follows a Christian fundamentalist ideology that is toxic to democracy. He believes women shouldn’t vote. Time for him to get his @$$ handed to him by a well intentioned woman.

Hegseth and the White Supremacists are the real snowflakes. They really don't seem to understand that women and non whites don't have to agree with them. "All men are created equal" whether the racists believe it or not. They are trying to erase women and minorities whose bravery has been documented in global historical records. Like Trump and the rest of the GOP, the racists show everyone outside of America their insecurity and cruelty.

Note to Grand Dragon Pete. Put up all the racist statues you want. They’re coming down in T-minus 3 years, 5 months and 20 days. Live it, teach it, fight it all you can. You’ve got an expiration date and your confederacy will lose again.

Hegseth is such an ignorant hypocrite. He erased DoD history as soon as he was confirmed and has done nothing well in the months since. I expect we will see more of his hypocrisy and ignorance if he remains as an unqualified rube in his current position.

But he does do pull up competitions with RFK, Jr.

Back in the day Ronnie Reagan called to the "Republican Base" with racist "dog whistles". The Republican Base was MAGA before Donny Boy invented the term. He knew his audience and is one of them. Is this news to anyone?

bitchybitchybitchy's avatar

It shouldn't be news to anyone, but white racists don't like to be exposed.

How can anyone celebrate WHITE history? I guess the KKK is alive and well. Hegseth is a religious hypocrite. Doesn't the Bible say it's one of the worst sins?

Am glad she raised rape, which was also used against males to demean them. The act is a protected (hence endorsed?) element of extremist antiabortion legislation. Hegseth, whose major accomplishment is as an impregnator for whom marriage vows mean nothing, admires the Crusades & most likely, the Inquisition (or would that be the Thiel VP?). There's more to this bloodlust than the vast bloodletting of the Civil War. If Hegseth had been adults during WWII in the land of his & Noem's Norwegian forbears, which side would they have been on?

Absolutely no surprise there. He's just following his convicted felon mob boss.

At the time of the statue’s removal, I thought it would be better to leave it in Arlington National Cemetery. Keep the 32-foot statue at the same location, but reinstall it at the bottom of a 34-foot hole. Add dirt and plant flowers over the top of it. An appropriate burial for the mythology of the lost cause.

Lies Across America is a good read. It details when and why and by whom monuments to the traitors of the CSA were erected, providing the context racists such as Hegseth prefer to ignore if not deny. Meantime, the ignorant and the racist who want to claim that the insurrection against the USA was based on anything other than the enslavement of others and the right to expand that enslavement throughout the USA should just read what the seceding states legislatures gave as the reason for the treason. They were very clear about it. Hegseth owes us truth whether it is pretty or not, where it is pretty and where it is not.

Shalise,

I have been following your pieces for the Contrarian for some time and am consistently impressed with the wisdom and clear insight they contain. And to top it off, you can flat out write. If it's a comfortable medium for you or maybe even if it isn't, for the good of the people, I would also love to see you and Jen Ruben do live interviews from time to time
