I'm pretty sure we already know how the six religious fascists on the formerly known as Supreme Court are going to rule, although they are all catholics, strangely enough. They have proven time and again that precedent means absolutely nothing to them. And, let's face it, they are bad christians. They lie and cheat, probably steal, too.
Anyway, if I hadn't already been an atheist, these six would have driven me to it.
After the total evisceration of the Civil Rights Act, the Presidential Immunity decision, it's blatant disregard for precedent and their clear devotion to the unitary executive abomination, we know we cannot trust this SC to make just and ethical decisions.
We got another verification the corrupt Roberts court is in the bag for Trump. Today Roberts did their usual Trump boogaloo on the shadow docket with delaying an injunction by a lower court to stop the Trump ballroom. He put a stay in place until the time SCOTUS can get around to deciding the issue. That might be in a year or two and by then the damage will be done. Typical stall tactic by Roberts that happens over and over and over again.
What's the remedy? Realign the court to 13 justices with the next Democratic administration and term limits.
I understand how the point applies now. I’m thinking about the long term. Right now, the decisions we find unjust & unethical are cheered by many others. There have been, & in the future may be, decisions they object to. If the Court was expanded each time that happened, it could have hundreds of members by now.
I do think the Court needs reforms, but more in the areas of ethical standards & perhaps term limits.
When Moscow Mitch stole two seats to make it a 6 MAGA Mullahs to 3 democracy abiding justices, it made it out of hand.
The Roberts "Make Trump a King" ruling and violating their own Purcell principle allowing Alabama to racially gerrymander districts WHILE PEOPLE WERE VOTING confirmed this an illegitimate court.
It needs to be placed back in hand by adding 4 new justices.
What I'd like to ask of people like Texas Values and other groups pushing this nonsense: Is your faith so weak that you cannot go into your closet, shut the door, and pray to your god in private? Do you have to force others to conform to your beliefs to feel validated?
And they never will. But if you call them out on their behavior, they go into victim mode, claiming they're being persecuted for their beliefs, not their actions.
It's the same with calling out their bigotry. "Oh, I'm a bigot because I don't agree with you? Look how biased you are." No, they're bigots because they denigrate whole groups of people. Sadly, I haven't found a comeback for that. How do you foist reality on those in denial?
"The year of our Lord," had more to do with the calendar, and making sure history knew what calendar, so the exact date would be remembered, than any religious observance.
There's more than just this one assault on the First Amendment by the MAGA Republicans and Trump, as reported today in the NYT.
We learned Trump is threatening the Washington think tank, Center for American Progress, with a $5 billion defamation lawsuit over their report concluding that his deployment of the National Guard to cities across the country did nothing to lower crime in those cities.
His lawsuit filing lackey lawyer Alejandro Brito sent the center a threatening letter. He said the report was "full of malicious and false statements."
The report was based on crime statistics from Trump's own government. This is a full on attack on the First Amendment and its intent is to censor and silence speech.
The NYT's article contained this sentence: "The president has repeatedly claimed that his administration is the most transparent in American history."
We should sue Trump for making this outrageous malicious and false statement. He runs the least transparent administration in history. We know because we're kept in the dark about what's happening with Trump's health, the casualties and the costs of Trump's failed Iran war, their gutting of federal agencies and federal employees, Trump's financial dealing with crypto oligarchs and insider trading, and the bribes he's taking to pass out pardons. That's only the tip of the iceberg of the corruption and self-dealing Trump is hiding from the American people.
LETS SUE HIM. Will use the Trump Rule he just established.
The people arguing that the United States was founded as a Christian nation ignore the fact that the Constitution *explicitly* rejects the idea of religion as a requirement for membership in the government. Article VI, clause 3 ends with this statement:
"but no religious test shall ever be required as a qualification to any office or public trust under the United States".
Not quite separation of church and state, but a forceful prohibition of religion as a factor in government office.
Can Texas classrooms post important teachings from other major (or even minor) religions alongside the Ten Commandments? As a way to teach that there are many different religions and beliefs.
In my simple opinion if you’re going to allow Christians to have their bibles and 10 commandments then you must allow Torahs and Korans and other religious books in the public schools or not allow any religious books at all.

I can easily see that path getting out of hand, with the Court expanded each time one side doesn’t like the decisions.
The SC needs structural reforms. The size of the unjust and unethical decisions justify expansion imo.

Infinite expansion would dilute the court's power, so let it happen.

As a proud graduate of the school district that gave us Engel v. Vitale, I am infuriated.
Can't they just post the commandments FACING THE WALL? The law doesn't say which way they are to be facing, only that they be posted.
