Eating cake and for me, even eating the cake batter off the beaters, raw eggs be damned. Omg, so good. Childhood, when we were too stupid to know the perils of life. Be safe this weekend wherever you are. Considering 160 million of us are in the path of this storm, my bet is I need to hope for your safety. All the best.
Glad to know you, friend. A peaceful and safe protest in the red town near me. These people need to see us exercising our rights and carrying the flag.
I always love having a recipe inserted into a piece that could be considered completely outside the kitchen. It brings us back, and back, to food and its connections to memory and place. Ah, those darn cats! They know a good thing when they see it and perfectly time a distracted moment!
Thank you for this -- fond memories of my mother's spice cake and our trips to the library. Comforting in the midst of the firestorm we're living through now.
Such a sweet picture and a lovely memory of library and family. As for the current political climate, I especially like your comment "repulsive and ignorant spewings". That describes almost everything he spews.
I also have fond memories of stacks of library books checked out by my mother, my sister and me back in the day. Ritz crackers and Cracker Barrel cheese also sounds about right. I love spice cake and this one sounds delicious. Take good care of yourself, and thanks for helping us do the same.
We found our mother’s cake stand. Another sober person wrangled for another bottle of wine. At this point it might not matter what the cake tastes like but believe you me, it is good.
Boy howdy, that Scandinavian cake is involved (I don’t cook much). We had to find somebody sober to get a second bottle of wine before the storm. Every bowl is dirty. I did lick the beaters, raw eggs be damned. Omg, so good. I lost most of my taste and smell after covid but this cake batter came through for me. Can’t wait for the final tasting. What fun! I hope the generator works tomorrow. Be safe. Wine, spice cake and snow. Yummy. Thank you. Hello to your family.
Thank you so much for this recipe from my childhood. My Norwegian mother and her friends used to bake this cake. My mother believed a cake was needed to complete a warm, cozy home.
Now, with the cold temperatures outside and the Gestapo tensions rising in our country, I need a comforting piece of cake.
What a lovely library tribute and sweet appreciation of your mother. Brought a tear to my eye, too…Gonna go buy the ingredients for spice cake which is my favorite, a bottle of wine and come on snow - you can’t get me now!
DOING THIS. There are many ways to show solidarity (and also rationalize eating cake!)

Thank you. With the storm coming this will be a nice reprieve.
I think there is a mistake in the frosting directions. Do you beat the butter and cream cheese and then add the confectionery sugar?
You are right! Working to get it fixed!! Thanks.
welcome
The cake smells divine! 10,000 bed detention center? That’s insane and I can imagine every infectious disease imaginable.
The smell of that cake baking is a keeper, no?
As for infectious disease outbreaks...What's a little bit of measles in a family detention center? https://www.nytimes.com/2026/02/02/us/politics/ice-measles-texas.html

The cake pan might be dark in color. What other ways could it be dark? In sensibility or temperament? Hmm
