I sure don’t want to let go of the joy this World Cup has brought to me, mostly a non-fan, as I watched the surprising love affair develop between Americans and the passionate fans from far-flung countries such as Algeria, Cape Verde, Norway and Scotland who have have helped us remember what is good, and even wonderful, about our country by seeing it through their eyes. Trump had to try to make it about himself, and of course, knows no other way to win than by whining and cheating. How sad for the US team (and my grandsons, who were at the game!) that his interference tarnished them as well. However, I’m going to try to hold on to the joy a bit longer and hope that the beauty of the sport itself is able to wipe this regrettable episode from our minds. It’s given us a ray of sunshine in a pretty bleak time, and I’m grateful.
To quote Ms. Armstrong: "U.S. fans filled the stadium with “Country Roads, Take Me Home.” Kylian Mbappe and Lionel Messi, the ageless wonder, are rewriting history every other day. Erling Haaland charms the world with goals and Snapchat. Ståle Solbakken gave an impassioned speech about how his players’ courage has changed Norway forever. The team from tiny Cape Verde inspired the global population. Mohamed Salah was moved to tears during Egypt’s historic run. Lawrence, Kansas, rallied around the Algerian team. Those are the images that deserve to endure." Those of us who watched the World Cup games were and are most interested in the teams and the games. There were many spectacular moments and noisy but respectful spectators. The rest is flashes in the pan which get washed out with the water :)
Global Village in spite of the fact that anything he touches is corrupted and ugly.
