He was a colossal embarrassment.

I would support moving the UN to another country, even though it has been such an honor and advantage having it in the US. The world needs a more stable and more reliable venue.

Steve 218's avatar

I could see the UN moving headquarters to the United Kingdom, where it has more importance and greater respect.

Lauren's avatar

How? It doesn't actually exist in the US when you get the right address. It's not in NY. It's not in NYC. It's basically its own country.

George Patterson's avatar

In that case, it needs its own airport. Delegates need a US Visa to get there.

Pete Gorton's avatar

Switzerland is the only option - uniformly understood to be 'neutral'.

The world is laughing at us. Formerly the greatest country in the world, now a joke.

Steve 218's avatar

Good grief, what a disjointed hateful jabberfest. It's surprising that the other delegates there didn't walk out. They showed great restraint, and if they didn't know what Trump was before (unlikely) they most certainly do now.

I am embarassed to have this demented creature as the president of my country. He is a disgrace and a danger.

KnockKnockGreenpeace's avatar

That he would bring up the fcking escalator is pathetic.

Steve 218's avatar

But how like Trump to bring up a whinge like that. He is always the put-upon victim in his own mind and is willing to share his stream-of-consciousness ranting without filters or reason.

KnockKnockGreenpeace's avatar

He thinks everybody is out to get him just because, but everybody is out to get him because he's a jerk.

Steve 218's avatar

That's the most polite thing that I've heard him called for some time. Your polite filters are working overtime.

KnockKnockGreenpeace's avatar

Nah, I'm just out of insults. What'll I do for the next 3 years?

Steve 218's avatar

Same thing Trump does -- recycle the old ones and form new combinations of them!

Like the scorpion, it is his nature.

Another beautifully written article that is right on point.

But I gut stuck when you wrote, "fund the work that isn't theatrical ... vaccine campaigns".

This in the days after a campaign against Tylenol and months after a campaign against the "Apple Pie" vaccines.

But just because your advice won't be followed now doesn't mean that it isn't important for the rest of us to be informed and better able to support good policy when offered.

Ivan Tufaart's avatar

It wouldn't change anything but I'm surprised there was not a massive walk-out for his speech. Or failing that, if the delegates stayed, but turned their backs to the podium-- a classic military gesture indicating "I'm giving you due respect, but I have no confidence in you"

patricia's avatar

they need our money, food, and weapons

donna woodward's avatar

I'm surprised none of his team didn't gently escort him away from that teleprompter after the first few tirades, before he could embarrass himself and his country even more.

George Patterson's avatar

Get rid of the Security Council. Nobody should have a veto over any resolution arrived at by most of the other nations.

KnockKnockGreenpeace's avatar

"If Washington wants to reduce UN theatrics, fund the work that isn’t theatrical: food pipelines, vaccine campaigns, grain corridors, inspections, monitors."

Deja vu all over again. It's not the theatrics but who gets to employ them: only Trump can control the stage. So, he goes up there with a rally speech, railing against theatrics. If this country doesn't have a frank conversation about narcissistic sociopathy and why it is antithetical to leadership, we accept his bullshit.

patricia's avatar

WE do not accept his bullshit....problem is HIS americans do

KnockKnockGreenpeace's avatar

Hey, if they don't want to discuss mental illness, they can enjoy more fatal violence. They seem to like it.

patricia's avatar

they seem to be it

patricia's avatar

I would LOVE to see you discussing narcissistic sociopathy with bubba from mississippi, or any other idiot american for that matter.

Brian O’Neill's avatar

That may be the highest bar anyone’s ever set for me. I’ll take it as the career benchmark I never knew I needed.

KnockKnockGreenpeace's avatar

Happy to pass the baton. You can do it, Brian! :)

And I add, thank you for the context on the value of the UN. Americans seem to expect all-or-none solutions these days, which is so wasteful. It reminds me of a quote by Robert Redford that came up last week: “I was not interested in the red, white and blue part of America,” Redford told NPR’s Terry Gross. “I was interested in the gray part where complexity lies.” Perhaps that is where solutions lie as well.

patricia's avatar

I meant that for my friend knockknock but you can play also...just struck me funny

Some have written to move the UN to another country....even though they have a unique address, just know that NYC benefits greatly by having it's physical location there. All of the hotels, restaurants and other 'travel necessities' bring $$$ into the city and state when members come.

Robyn Chauvin's avatar

The UN is not going away, but they will probably decide to relocate to a Democratic country.

Lauren's avatar

Technically, the UN doesn't exist in a country. It's its own weird location...not in America.

Robyn Chauvin's avatar

The headquarters , The place where the UN meet is New York

Pat Jones Garcia's avatar

Clapping my hands at your straight forward description and listing of what we should accomplish with the U.N. I was embarrassed at what the president was saying to the General Assembly. "Stark, raving mad" was an apt description. Thank you.

Marc Panaye's avatar

There is no use, no gain, in trying to explain to the 79 year old convicted felon the good the UN does. The fellow never listens and never learns.

On Gaza he forgets that his regime holds the veto vote that stops all UN pressure on Bibi's regime.

Jean Clegg's avatar

Trump has no interest in anything beneficial, humanitarian or ethical. The planet revolves around his ego and damn everything and everyone else to hell(on earth). His religion is his mirror reflecting only his vileness and depravity which in turn is how he sees all things.

Lauren's avatar

I'm hoping someone will clarify something for me. Brian is the only 1 to get this right. The UN isn't in any country. It's not in NY. It's not in NYC. So what does the media always insist on saying it's in NY?

donna woodward's avatar

It's within the territory of the US but is by nature extraterritorial to the US. It's like an Embassy in an overseas host country. A US Embassy in Country X, i.e. the land the Embassy occupies, is considered US territory, not the territory of Country X. The UN is physically in the US but not bound by US law. The media uses shorthand that might mislead people about the legal status of the UN. It's not a US organization and not subject to US law.

George Patterson's avatar

because you can only get there by going through NYC.

but what he wanted from NATO was to have other nations buy more arms from the US. What he's gotten is Europeans looking into manufacturing for themselves and buying more military gear in-house. It's going slow, but it's accelerating.
