The White House’s visual communication strategy reveals how social media has notably and dangerously become the primary vehicle for presidential messaging.
Federal worker household here, and one of us has to walk past that ridiculous tough-guy portrait on the way in to work every day. Pity party welcome.
And the photo with the maga hat? You're killing me, Azza! Can we please have a president again who doesn't wear a ball cap with a suit? (It would be funny if there were still a price tag on the hat...)
Trump looks so incredibly stupid in these "badass" photos. He's had bodyguards all his life and would be scared to death to go out alone anywhere especially camping in a national park! Lions, tigers, oh my!!! What a total embarrassment and clown we have
Azza, while I always value your analyses of our convicted felon dictator and his mob members, today I have to take serious issue with your first paragraph.
By using the wording "the capture of President Nicholas Maduro..." you unquestionably quote the wording in his social media post. Maduro was NOT captured, he was KIDNAPPED.
Further, you write "... a potential violation of international law, military action against a sovereign nation,." There can be no doubt that all of these actions are a DEFINITE violation of not only international, but also US law. Plus the "military action" is an undeclared WAR against a sovereign nation, since our dictator does not have the constitutional power to declare war.
No matter what a terrible person Maduro is, he is/was the leader of an independent nation that the US had no right to just invade. And really, is Maduro so much worse that what we have as a dictator? The differences between those two are getting smaller by the minute.
Oh I totally agree with you! These word choices are important. But I’m an independent journalist who depends on the expertise of the excellent lawyers, fact-checkers, and editorial staff of the contrarian to make sure I don’t say anything that could get us into trouble. I do not defend this action in the slightest!
I can understand you being overly cautious in light of our dictator suing anyone and anything just to make a buck, but other journalists have used the word "kidnapped." Also, Norm Eisen and other smart legal brains have explained why this action was illegal by international law, which the US is a signatory of and which means it has automatically become as US law. Something about paragraph 51 of the UN charter?
THAT is his official portrait? Hilarious. Ridiculous. Looks like a middle schooler trying to look tough. Oh, wait, that is equivalent to what we actually have here.
And there must be something said about the revisionist ‘history of the US’ by changing the website of the J6 insurrection! Can hardly wait for THAT change-back! Although I hope someday to NEVER see his face again, leaving his mug shot is pretty perfect!

Ugh. Pity party granted for having to walk past that portrait every day! Yikes
What an eye sore!

I know. They aren’t inspiring confidence that’s for sure

This is a good point! I’ll look into it. Thank you for noting.

Ugh, I know. I had forgotten about how awful the portrait was until it re-emerged for this awful social media post…
