UShealthcare system is broken due to lack of bipartisan will to fix it and end the profit factor in healthcare and Insurance. We are a third world country when it comes to efficiency of health care. EMTALA and the ER is primary means of treatment for many due to lack of insurance and that should be the exception and not the rule. Just look at Israel's highly effective system of mandatory insurance with three competing plans to choose from. Everyone pays in and no loopholes for the uber rich.
Trump does not want well people, and he has said he wants the population reduced by about a third. He does not want any government help to non-wealthy people. And he and others do not realize how bountiful a small amount in taxes can add up for necessary or good programs. Stinginess is the name of their game.
The KFF calculator is showing about an 80% increase in my expected premiums when the increase is actually 22%. I’m using the same income as last year and the plan is comparable to the plan I had last year. What’s the deal? Exaggerating premium increases makes for a better story about unaffordability, but we all need to be sure info is accurate, right?
If Republicans understood that facts matter, they could be all over this, but they’re in over their heads in lies. Even though they are missing this opportunity, we should be doing better. Jen reported annual increases as monthly increases in her piece yesterday and now I suspect the KFF calculator is miscalculating the increases by a lot. This seems to be mostly a KFF problem (Jen’s reporting is based of their info except for the annual/monthly mix-up), but the rest of us (Jen included) are going along with the exaggerated numbers. Those numbers didn’t make sense to me as someone covered by aca subsidies.
I hope KFF will look at this. They seem pretty clueless about it. Their info is supposed to be non-partisan. It’s not looking that way to me. Maybe it’s just a case of inaccurate programming. The KFF info is helping to drive national news and politics about what’s happening with the ACA subsidies and if it’s inaccurate, that’s a problem.
Hi Lisa -- Our calculator is designed to provide accurate information about the change in benchmark premiums. If there appears to be an error, we'd certainly like to know about it and address it. Can you provide any information about your premium increase (your plan and what county you live in) and how the calculator is giving different results? You can email me at LarryL [at] kff.org if that's preferable. Thanks.
I noticed some mix-up, too, and chalked it up to the author missing it. I have, however, read or seen on the news quite a difference in people's increases on their health insurance.
Very much off the point but Jen, your screen and/or camera is foggy and has been for a few days. Just FYI. Thank you for all that you and the other Contrarians do!
The Republicans have complained about the ACA since it passed. They immediately started to do anything they could to make their complaints real. Remove the mandate, allowed insurance companies to offer those policies that look like insurance but really aren't. And have tried to kill the subsidies.
The biggest problem with the ACA is that Obama and the Dems tried too hard to water it down enough so that they could get Republican buy in. The minute they realized that they were going to have to push this thing through with reconciliation they should have pulled it back and reworked it into what it should have been in the first place.
Now we have a program that Republicans want to whittle down until it is basically useless rather than try to help fix it. Further proof that Republicans only care about their constituents around election time.
But I'm sure Republicans were sincere about sitting down and having a discussion about extending the subsidies and our eight brave senators will be vindicated...
Healthcare is a human right not a privilege in my opinion and everyone deserves to have affordable healthcare regardless of their age, race or gender.
What an informative conversation, Thank you.
Of course all evidence of a broken health care system.

Going backward!!
Exactly ^^^

I’m doubting the KFF numbers provided by its calculator. More about my doubts—with evidence—is in my comment on Rubin’s piece yesterday:

All is clear on my end, just to let you know.
