Good for those legislators in Texas who stood up (and walked out) to fulfill their oaths to support our Constitution! Our Constitution supports them as strongly as they are supporting it. Abbott and Paxton are both worse than kindergarteners. They are both corrupt and should be in jail at least Paxton. If they get away with this I hope a blue tsunami overtakes TX. This is blatantly racist. If this goes to the SCOTUS it will be a litmus test. Why? You can only political gerrymander not racially gerrymander. At what point does this become a racial issue? In Alabama our state legislature was gerrymandering district 2 so Republicans could have that seat but SCOTUS made them do it over to reflect the demographics of our state which is around 30% black. That meant that in Alabama there should be 2 districts that are mostly black and they will choose who represents them. They are trying to do the same thing over again despite SCOTUS’s ruling in the matter. These Republicans think they can ignore the court and do what they please. If this goes to SCOTUS then they should be consistent in their decision by not allowing TX to redistrict. Otherwise it would be saying a lot about SCOTUS if they would allow one state to redistrict based on improving the odds of a GOP victory in one state but not another.

Democrats are again falling into the trap of fighting back on Republicans’ rigged playing field and fighting hard to never really win. Just countering Republican gerrymandering in Texas is not enough. For many years now the House has been unconstitutionally NOT proportional to population among the states because the last time Congress set the size of the House was 1929. Given the distribution of people today, it’s not possible to have Constitionally mandated proportionality with a 435 seat limit. The Constitution sets the maximum size of the House at 1 Representative per 30,000 people and the minimum size at 1 per state. We can no longer meet both the minimum size and proportionality at the same time—the size must be increased. The current limit has given unfair representation in Congress to red state voters overall already. Given that the # of presidential electors per state is #Senators+#of Representatives, that also rigs the presidential race for Republicans unfairly and we’ve seen the result in more than one race, which has in turn allowed this extreme partisan Supreme Court. Democrats should take this moment to push back on THAT longstanding unconstitutional unfairness, not just back to the rigged playing field we’re already on.
