It’s absolutely ridiculous that a coalition of voters would even have to have a ballot measure that disallows politicians to overturn ballot measures that have already passed. They will have to vote the vermin out. What else can you call these people? Thanks for bringing this information to us Jennifer.

Just another step in making women third class citizens behind males and zygotes.

This goes along with the jury in NYC finding Diddy not guilty of the worst abuses and so many other things. Epstein, Cosby, Weinstein etc etc etc.

Wrong. There are NO ‘classes’ of citizenship, no partial citizenship, no halfsies in citizenship. Slavery is defined in international law as the removal of bodily autonomy. So, when one is not a citizen, one is a slave; there are no other choices. American woman are legal slaves, not citizens at all, ’third class’ or otherwise.

I strongly disagree with you. There are plenty of powerful women who wouldn't dream of being treated like slaves.

Yes, legally and technically there are no classes of citizenship, but then slavery is not legal either, is it?

The fact remains that women in red states have had their rights to make decisions over their own bodies taken away by men and misguided women. That does not make them a slave, that makes them a citizen without full rights of citizenship, i.e. second or third class citizens.

OMG! I just realized I have been assuming you are a woman without evidence either way! My bad! Please correct me if I am wrong because if you are a man that would explain so much!

You are entitled to your opinion certainly (and the choice to stick your head in the sand), but like climate change and gravity, just because you don’t ‘believe’ it does not mean it’s not true. You negate your own point by talking about ‘classes’ of citizenship, and that confusion is intentional on the part of republicans. I challenge you to show me just where in the US Constitution it confers halfsies of citizenship.

Your colloquial definition of a slave — like most everyone in it-can’t-happen-here America — is not the same as a legal one, although the legal one has immense practical implications, as we are finally beginning to see. There’s a lot of scholarship on this: I did not make it up. In the US our national stain is slavery based on race. Now republicans want slavery based on sex. What do you think the whole trad wife / natalist / anti-vaccine / forced birth thing is about? And don’t kid yourself that we are safe in blue states. Right now there is a case headed to SCOTUS to outlaw abortion pills everywhere and it will also forbid birth control of all sorts in all states — except for the utterly ridiculous ‘rhythm method’ — as well as IVF. They want us all barefoot and pregnant and terrified, and our children sick and vulnerable and stupid. Why else attack universities where women outnumber men? And have you taken a look at the SAVE act?? The whole thing is ugly and it’s evil but we must face that it is absolutely true.

(Hilariously, this one is from the Federalist Society before they went nutso.)

Here it is straight:

1. The removal and denial of bodily autonomy equals legal slavery.

2. Dobbs legally removed the bodily autonomy of all American women and continues to deny it.

3. American women are therefore legal slaves. And, yes, legalities and technicalities rule.

4. A person is either a citizen as defined in our Constitution’s 14th amendment with all the pertaining rights and privileges — ALL, not some — or not. There is NO such thing as partial citizenship or classes of citizenship. If one is not a citizen, the only other option is slave, ie, lacking bodily autonomy.

5. Dobbs laid the legal groundwork to remove the citizenship of American women and their enslavement, and it’s only the start.

Will there be push back? Are there women with money and power who will object? Yes. That does not mean it’s not here.

You are certainly entitled to your opinion, whether "straight" or not. If you think I'm sticking my head in the sand, then so be it.

Enough said,

And it’s not a lay ‘opinion’. It’s an informed, reasoned legal analysis by a lawyer (me), backed up by gold-standard original sources like the UN.

93clementine's avatar

Yikes. So, my next question is why, in heaven’s name, would you decide to just ignore this? I simply don’t understand why an obviously smart, informed, thinking woman such as yourself would CHOOSE not believe what is right in front of her nose. You now the old saw: The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is that good women do nothing. ‘Nuff said?? No way — we are not even close to ‘nuff said, no matter how much you don’t want to know. We must scream from the rooftops that we will not be slaves! But we first have to acknowledge the reality. Check out my links above and then try to convince yourself that it is not true that American women are not legally American citizens. Putting your fingers in your ears and reciting, ‘la, la, la, la, la, ...’ will not make it go away.

There’s a LOT of information out there, you just have to be brave enough to look for it. Search only on reputable websites and original sources and beware of the propaganda that is everywhere, often disguised as ‘protecting’ women. A really horrendous place to start is Project 2025. Terrifying but necessary for us to know what they have planned for us: it’s as ugly and cruel as it gets. I’m a lawyer and have a huge number of good sources if you are interested. I now it’s a shocker but the sooner we look it in the eye and accept what we are up against the sooner we can figure out how to get our rights back.

Last week, we learned the Trump Administration was willing to burn food already purchased thru USAID rather than distribute it. Now Doctors without Boarders denounce the reported waste of $9.7 of critical contraceptives apparently slated to be destroyed rather than sent to those who need it. https://www.doctorswithoutborders.org/latest/unconscionable-us-plan-destroy-97-million-contraceptives and the Guardian reports the French are looking into stopping the destruction. https://www.theguardian.com/world/2025/jul/31/france-under-pressure-to-stop-97m-of-usaid-contraceptives-being-destroyed Why isn't this front page news?

Please take your analysis one step further to its obvious conclusion: fascism and rape / outlawing abortion / forced pregnancy / abrogating the bodily autonomy and therefore the citizenship of women go hand-in-hand. The forced removal of women from the public sphere is one of the first actions by taken by fascist authoritarians. Once more than half of a population is suppressed and terrorized, the rest fall into line easily.

I’ve reached the sad conclusion that Red and Blue America have become in effect a couple trapped in a bad marriage, rapidly becoming an abusive marriage that’s deteriorated into being beyond repair. At this point the most appropriate solution is a (amicable, I hope but doubt) divorce.

Think of it—Blue America can build a modern, prosperous economy based on information, finance, and high-tech manufacturing and other modern enterprises. People’s individual freedom to control their own bodies (eg. Reproductive rights) and determine their own living circumstances (whom they marry, what gender they live as, etc) will be guaranteed in the Constitution. However, people’s “rights” to impose their religious beliefs on others, or to interfere or harm others will be strongly regulated—for example there will be no “right” to pollute. There will be no “right” to refuse to vaccinate yourself or your kid, since your failure to vaccinate puts me and my kids at risk. There will be a strong safety net and some kind of national health coverage.

And Red Americans can have their hearts’ delight setting up their very own Third World country, right here in North America! The economy will be backward, based on extraction (agriculture, lumber, mining, etc) and on heavy (dirty) manufacturing. Society will be severely stratified. There will be a small cadre of super-rich people who live in isolated, gated communities. They won’t be in the government because they don’t need to be—the “government” will be at their beck and call. They feel no responsibility for society in general. There will be a small “middle class” running on an economic treadmill and having to sprint ever-faster just to say even. There will be a larger working class, getting by doing odd jobs, and working in those industries for poor wages and no benefits. And there will be a large underclass, living in shanty towns and getting by as they can off of the crumbs and scraps that fall from the tables of everyone else. The country will be ruled by an authoritarian who twists the truth to suit his (and it will certainly be a “him”) interests.

Without a doubt there will be difficult issues.

1. Since both of us have been living high on the hog using someone else’s borrowed money we’ll need to figure out how to split the debt. Same goes for Federal property in the states.

2. A problem specific to Blue America is that our land is not contiguous—we have contiguous strips in the Northeast and Pacific Coast (plus Hawaii), but there are patches of blue surrounded by red (Illinois is the best example). Someone has proposed a solution that Blue America petitions to join Canada, which would make us contiguous with them (except for IL again). That said, I’d be stunned if the Canadians even wanted us because we’d outnumber them and completely change their country.

3. A final problem is that the Red/Blue split is probably more an urban-inner suburb/rural- outer suburb one more than a North/South/West one. For example, in ruby red Texas, Houston, Austin, San Antonio are solidly Blue, and even Dallas leans Blue. And in deep Blue Maryland, the mountains and Eastern Shore are pretty Red. Because of that, a split would entail disruption akin to when British South Asia was partitioned into India and Pakistan. But we’re pretty clever and I’m sure we can figure something out.

OK, NOW I'VE DROPPED THE PUCK. LET THE FACE-OFF BEGIN!
