Excellent explanation of a process and position most of us are not familiar with but need to understand. Especially with the unsettled times of our nation and its historical part in the United Nations. I'd like to think the majority of us realize the importance of the U.N. Secretary-General to our present and future. Thank you.
The power of the member countries of the Security Council is a stumbling block to the work of the UNGA and subordinate organizations with the UN, such as the ICC. There must be a way to make the workings of the UN more egalitarian.
The problems the UN faces today are much greater than the challenge of selecting a new Secretary General. The UN Charter which allows so much unchecked power to the 5 permanent members of the Security Council has led to a dysfunctional body. The UN cannot be truly effective until the charter is rewritten to add real checks on the permanent members. Currently two of the five members have initiated wars of choice - Russia in Ukraine (and elsewhere), and the U.S. in Iran, Venezuela, and maybe soon Cuba. How is this activity consistent with the values and goals of the UN? Why should permanent members get to keep their priviledged, supervoting power when they are active in wars of choice? The charter needs a means of suspending a permanent member when a certain percentage of general members determine that a permament member is an initiator of a war of choice.
