Do you think that southern states would accept it if blue states voted to secede? They've always maintained that secession is legitimate.

On the other hand, that would mean the end of the gravy train that these red welfare states have been on for so long.

Thank you for this outstanding, powerful post.

Attention caught by your suggestion that with respect to ICE, "calls for better training are unlikely to solve our problems." As you say, ICE strategy or mission is not law enforcement but thuggery and terror. I conclude from what you say that demands for reform of ICE will have limited effect because ICE is a terror organization and cannot be window dressed into a law enforcement operation. ICE OUT is the only demand likely to give relief to terrorized Americans.

I’ve often thought that Trump isn’t the President of the United States, he’s the second president of the Confederacy.

It is horrifying to see the similiarities between what happened in the civil war and what is now happening with Americas decent into Autocratic Fascism.

We are being made to almost relive our sorid, unethical and immoral past.

If/When this nightmare is ever over, we CANNOT make the same mistakes that were made in the aftermath of the War Between the States. Assuming our Republic survives, no one gets to go home and say that the score is 3-0 at halftime. Treason and Sedition MUST be treated for what it is, and resolved accordingly. Top-tier maga don't get to walk away this time. i don't care if it's Trump, Crow, Thomas, ICE officials and goons, or the copy boy at Heritage. Every one of them has a debt to pay back to our Constitution the Rule of Law, and most importantly, "We, the People". Full Stop.

I believed the Civil War had been decided in 1865 in favor of the North until I was drafted into the Army in 1970. In basic training and throughout my 2-year service that included an all-expenses-paid trip to Vietnam and SE Asia, I witnessed unbelievable ignorance, aggression, and, yes, murder. I truly was then and am still gobsmacked at the depth of the hatred and the delusion about a way of life that never existed.

It is tempting to want to build walls to keep them captive in their beloved South, but history tells us that is never successful. Wouldn't it be wonderful if we could solve our human and civic differences through exclusion? But that is not sustainable. We must continue to use education, compassion, and a shared commitment to an ordered life (aka Rule of Law) to further our species and our nation.

Said beautifully, Marcus.

These are the same characters who insist the Civil War was about states rights. Hogwash, it was about slavery. All Confederate states published articles of secession. Read a few if you have the stomach for it; they are all about slavery.

Robert Lastick's avatar

You are sooo right, Benjamin. Slavery was the cause of the civil war, exactly the same as Fascism is enabling Autocracy.

“Neo-Confederate” is how I’ve been describing the R party for years, to anyone who’d listen (very few). I’m glad someone with a platform is taking it up. Spread it far & wide, call it what it is. They just forgot to change the sign on the door.

While we’re naming things appropriately, how about “detention centers” —> “concentration camps”?

Robert Lastick's avatar

100% SPOT ON, Lenny.

Traditionally history is written by the winners, but the American Civil Was was an exception-- somehow the losers managed to grab history by the neck and strangle it. And the Roberts court, in many of its decisions, has proved itself second to the Taney court as the worst in history.

Those who fail to understand what happend in the past are condemned to relive it, again and again.

This article documents our lack of understanding about the cival war and the result, Trump & MAGA.

I saw a great twist on that old quote from George Santayana on BlueSky the other day; sorry I don't remember who posted it, but I think it describes the maga GOP, busy protecting confederate statues while erasing much of the rest of our history too well, and is too fitting here to pass up:

"Those who ERASE history intend to REPEAT it."

Wow, thank you, Michael, for this great analysis. I'll have to read it again tomorrow so it will really sink in.

The Canadian PM is right. The EU need to create an Euroasian alliance with Australia, Japan, etc., to create a partnership against what the U.S. has become. The hard core truth now is that America can no longer be trusted.

I just reread this article and I understand it better today than I did last night. Five stars for Michael Podhorzer.

What I learned, more than anything else, is that the Democrats, who were the bad guys in the South during the civil war and reconstruction, have learned from their past mistakes.

Those Democrats who didn't learn switched parties and are now fascist rethuglicons, along with those who have always been fascists and are going backward in their world view and, even though they are still the minority. are working hard to force their beliefs on everyone else.

Reading this was a paradigm shift for me. Now I have an understanding of why we are here and what must be done to get the word out. Thank you;

There's some great insight here, but this maga reconstruction IS a long-term partisan REPUBLICAN project, and it is absurd to pretend otherwise. They've been at it since Nixon's southern strategy. Just because much was enacted at the state level doesn't mean it wasn't a bigger plot.

Retaliation is the MAGA way. Nothing has ever been resolved by this mode of action.

George Washington, April 18, 1783 on cessation of American Revolutionary War hostilities "[w]ishing that all the brave men ... who have shared in the toils and dangers ... and [in] establishing [the United States of America as] an Asylum for the poor and oppressed of all nations and religions."

MAGAs will never accept that nor likely will "white Christian nationalists." The gotcha for both of them is they don't understand that the true issue is about who has POWER and how they KEEP it. They do it by diverting attention from actual facts. SCOTUS insists that Correct Arithmetic, Valid Logic, and Understanding Law (and Constitutions) in Plain English are NOT Constitutional rights and that the judiciary (and POWERful State actors) are free to disregard them just like they have done to me. I didn't realize just how "little guy" I was until I needed the Courts to support Justice for me. See the proof in the attachment at https://usareset.net/forum/viewtopic.php?p=253#p253
