How can we allow this to happen? It is our moral obligation to end this horrendous brutality initiated by the corrupt President of our United States and enforced by his personal Gestapo. Don't look away! Vote for the return of decency to our United States. Our grandparents, almost all of whom were immigrants, are weeping for what our country has become.

I didn't know whether to weep or vomit after reading this piece. I hope there will be some equivalent of the Nuremberg trials to bring the perpetrators-- from Trump on down to the lowliest guard-- to justice. But I'm not betting on it.

These crimes against humanity are being perpetrated by persons who do not expect a peaceful change of government in the United States any more.

Beyond despicable, shameful. Horrifying. Thank you, Tim/Contrarians for publishing this information.

The topline findings are a gut punch:

Human Rights Watch and the ACLU found that people detained at Camp East Montana endured conditions of confinement that amounted to enforced disappearance; cruel, degrading and inhuman treatment; excessive use of force including one extrajudicial killing; life-threatening medical neglect; barriers to legal representation; and coercive third-country removals.

The rights groups concluded: “These abuses violate fundamental protections under U.S. and international human rights law.”

Remember the Nuremburg Trials? That is what will be needed when this is all over. Everyone complicit in these atrocities need to stand trial - from Trump on down.

Please send this to your Senators and Representatives Democrat and Republican alike with a note: HOW CAN YOU LET THIS HAPPEN IN THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA??? THERE ARE NO EXCUSES FOR THIS! FOR GOD’s SAKE, DO SOMETHING!! IF YOU CANNOT FIND THE SPINE TO FILE LAWSUITS INSISTING THAT HUMAN RIGHTS LAWS BE FOLLOWED, THEN GO THERE YOURSELF AND HOLD PRESS CONFERENCES INSIDE THE FACILITIES SO THE AMERICAN PEOPLE CAN SEE WHAT A HELLHOLE TRUMP AND HIS HENCHMEN ARE MAKING OUR COUNTRY INTO. SHAME! SHAME! SHAME!!

The guards won’t let them in. They are subject to arrest and charges.

There are two main driving factors here. One is the imposition of arrest and deportation quotas from above (at Stephen Miller's behest). This is the same model as Stalin's quota system for finding and arresting "enemies of the people" in the 1930's, and is leading to exactly the same results of brutality and ensnaring totally innocent people.

The other is the profit motive of contractors skimping on necessary services. The current contractor at CEM is Amentum, a company I once worked for as an embassy employee in Russia.

Mr. Dickinson, or anyone at The Contrarian, can you tell us: Would Democratic majorities in the U.S. House and Senate be able to shut these detention centers down and return these people to their homes in the U.S.?

This depraved behavior on the part of ICE staff at this "prison" is not in the lease surprising given the authoritarian shift under the Trump regime. If anyone wishes to bother, read the reports that documented the famous Stanford University prisoners/guards social experiment of the 1960s. This touchstone of how human behavior, particularrly among the subjects that were chosen to be guards says everything we need to know about ICE and their detention facilities.

I couldn't finish reading this. It's too horrible. We condemned the USSR for its gulags. We have now sunk to the same level.

Yes, that is a better comparison than concentration camps. Thank you for giving me this parallel to use in future comments.

Never ever thought to have this happen in 21st century United States of America. The people who run this concentration camp will, hopefully, face a damning final judgment. I have sent this article to several people to post on a variety of social media and to forward to elected officials.

I hold Congress responsible for overfunding ICE and CBP when there was clear evidence that DHS-ICE-CBP is cosplaying law enforcement, but acting extrajudicially. Congress, you funded this 21st Century Gestapo that has been killing citizens and immigrants alike. Now, starve this monster out of existence! DEFUND THEM!

RRiveter's avatar

Why isn't this story on every MSM website, and Congressional hearings being held???? What in the hell are the Dems doing to stop/prevent this???? Nada, nothing.

First, Tim thank you for this and other solid reporting. You are must-read for me.

Re: the weep or vomit feeling, I share both. This horrific concentration camp system I believe should be a top investigative issue after Democrats take the House. Put on notice all those in the DHS system who are responsible for this and other assaults on our system of democracy. There is accountability.

This is an utter hellhole. This should be broadcast everywhere. The whistleblowers need to get busy. The Senate and the House need to impeach the whole damn cabinet.
