With four family members in combat readiness positions in the military, I too will keep my fury going strong at the imbeciles and incompetents who were allowed/encouraged to start this war, based on nothing but Trump's need to distract from the Epstein scandal.
How can the US, the UK, France, et all demand that Iran forego its development of nuclear power, when more globally-bellicose nations like Russia, Israel, North Korea and China have nuclear weapons?
You forgot the most obvious, overlooked beneficiaries -- the Gulf states, Iran's sworn enemies. Trump doesn't just accept bribes and sops from them, but practically gets down on his knees to beg them for cash -- and they comply, knowing the influence this buys.
At this point, we're practically THEIR client states, not the other way around. The tails wag the dog with fierce and deadly effectiveness.
Excellent, and very astute, observations, Jennifer! Thank you! A flailing, cornered, delusional moron is acting out in desperate ways…..with, unfortunately, more to come. He…..and his enabling Republicans…..are: a plague upon our Country…..and World.
The ONLY way out of this mess that the American voter got us into, is for the American voter to fix this mess by OVERWHELMINGLY…..voting Blue….in EVERY election, at EVERY level. Vote Blue!
Yes, then we will get strong, defiant leadership like this statement from Rep. Hakeem Jeffries today:
“Iran is a bad actor and must be aggressively confronted for its human rights violations, nuclear ambitions, support of terrorism and the threat it poses to our allies like Israel and Jordan in the region” but added that outside of “exigent circumstances” the president “must seek authorization for the preemptive use of military force that constitutes an act of war.”
In other words, we aren't really against the war exactly, and maybe even support it, but you just didn't ask us first...
Nothing about the over 200 civilians already killed by the US and Israel...nothing about the flagrant violation of international law.... nothing about Israel's genocide and apartheid, only the 'threat' Iran poses to the country that has bombed Iran several times ...
Did Jeffries really say that? I am appalled - this is an illegal, unconstitutional, and immoral act. It wouldn't matter if it was 100% successful in the end - ayatollah gone, IRG disarmed, democracy breaking out all over, nuclear research facilities in rubble -- it is still wrong. In my moral universe, the ends do NOT justify the means.
and nothing about the Israelis murdered, raped, tortured by hammas supported by MANY Palestinians and the constant threat to Israel by the barbarians in Iran
....didn't take long for a genocide defender to speak up with the usual 'noun + verb+ Hamas" whataboutism.
Israel has killed over 600 Palestinian men, women and children in Gaza just since the 'ceasefire' went into effect, and injured thousands more... thousands of Palestinians from Gaza and the West Bank are still held hostage by Israel, with no charges, no court proceeding.. meanwhile 'settlers' and the IDF are killing and brutalizing Palestinians in the West Bank at a fever pitch....you know, the occupied zone where Hamas has never been a part of anything...
Israel has bombed Iran repeatedly before this, assassinated its leaders and scientists repeatedly...Netanyahu and other Israeli leaders have been claiming Iran was on the verge of a nuclear weapon for 30 years now...
Already just today, Israel killed at least 80 schoolchildren in Iran.
And on and on....just the other day, the Committee to Protect Journalists released its annual report.. The report states:
This is the second consecutive year-on-year record for press deaths.
Israel was responsible for two-thirds of all press killings in both 2025 and 2024.
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) has committed more targeted killings of journalists than any other government’s military since CPJ began documentation in 1992.
"Excellent, and very astute, observations, Jennifer!"
Jen's astute observations from 2010:
"But the emphasis on the existential threat to Israel ignores a more basic issue for Americans to ponder: a nuclear-armed Iran represents a dagger at the heart of America and an existential threat to our status as a superpower and guarantor of the West’s security. As to the former, Iran is pressing ahead with its long-range ballistic missile program. First the Middle East and Eastern Europe, then all of Europe and, within a matter of years, the U.S. will be within range of Iranian missiles. If those are nuclear and not conventional, what then? We’re not talking about whether Iran is going to be “merely” a destabilizing factor in the Middle East or whether it will set off an arms race with its neighbors or imperil Israel’s existence. We’re talking about whether America will then be at risk (and lacking sufficient missile-defense capabilities if we continue to hack away at our defense budget). The argument about whether mutual assured destruction can really work against Islamic fundamentalists who have an apocalyptic vision becomes not about Israel’s ability to deter an attack but about ours. Those who oppose American military action have an obligation to explain why America should place itself in that predicament."
"It is for these reasons...that the U.S. must act militarily to defang the mullahs. It is not for Israel but for ourselves and the preservation of America’s standing in the world that we must act. The considerable doubt that Obama will do so should disturb every elected leader and the public at large. It is time to have a robust discussion, not about the existential threat to Israel — for that is obvious and has been amply discussed — but about the threat to America. Put in these terms, we should all be asking a single question: will Obama commit the U.S. to use military force to prevent a fundamental threat to the safety and security of the U.S. and the Free World?"
As with all of his other recent actions, murder in the Caribbean, destruction of the White House, vandalism of the Kennedy Center, etc., more distraction from the Epstein files. The lengths to which he is willing to go to try to get away from Epstein tells us there is something truly horrendous in the as yet unreleased files. This is fascism, this is evil.
The Trumpstein bomb just keeps ticking. And Comer is definitely not well suited to be the country's lead investigator since truth is very far from his top priority.
I don't remember my mother telling me about any crackers, but she did take each of the three of us to vote with her as little kids (I was 7). And we all vote, and all vote Democratic.
Military commanders involved in this illegal and unconstitutional action must be brought to heel. They were warned against this very action after the unauthorized Venezuela attack. The import of this action goes beyond just an attack on Iran, it means that the military no longer feels it necessary to wait for congressional authority to engage in a war directed by the Executive branch. The American people must draw their own conclusions as to what this means domestically. The dictatorship is here.
Trump and Hegseth are just itching to kill people. Any people. They just cannot stand it that they haven't had an awesome, bloody super he-man war. We need a million volunteers to assist in getting people educated before the election, getting them registered to vote, making sure they can get to the polls or mail their ballot and anything else we can do. We cannot let this Congress stand as is.
Hegseth was a much better fit at Faux Noise where he didn't need to be smart to do his job. He has followed the Peter Principle route to his level of incomptence.
Meh. He already has gone too far on several occasions that would have gotten him removed by any competent adiminstration. A likely fact is that if we had a competent administration leader, he would never have gotten the position in the first place.
United States attacks, Venezuela. United States and Israel attack Iran. Russia and Ukraine have been at war for over four years. Pakistan and Afghanistan are at war. I guess if you don’t want to have midterm elections, starting World War III is probably a good way to do it!
"Death toll rises to 85 after strike on Iranian school
The death toll from a strike that hit a school in southern Iran has risen to 85 people, an official said on Iranian state TV.
Capt Tim Hawkins, a spokesperson for US Central Command, said he was “aware of reports” that a girls’ school was struck and they were looking into them."
Oh good, at least they are 'looking into it'
"Iranian media is reporting that 201 people have been killed and 747 people have been injured in the US-Israeli attacks"...of course, they must be lying...its not a reputable news source, like US media is ...
I can feel the freedom already...The BFFs USA and Israel, once again ,'freeing' people from the shackles of this mortal coil...
Iran’s Red Crescent and several state news outlets said more than 60 people were killed in the strike on Shajarah Tayyebeh school in the southern town of Minab. By Saturday evening, Iran’s state news broadcaster, IRIB, raised the toll to 85 dead and 93 injured. …
Video verified by The New York Times showed damage to a building described as an elementary school. In one video, black smoke billows up from a crumbling building whose walls are painted with pastel-colored flower, as onlookers scream, wail and embrace. Other videos show rescuers digging through the rubble with building cranes and shovels, and piles of bloodied, dusty backpacks. Another video reviewed by The Times shows rescue workers in military gear retrieving the severed hand of one of the victims from the wreckage.
“Under this rubble, students are buried,” a man shouts in another video, raising his voice over the sound of rescue workers drilling behind him, and holding up fistfuls of school papers and notebooks: “The blood of our loved ones, our students, which you can see on their schoolbooks.”
Why was the last puncutuation a question mark? To paraphrase David Holzman, (posted above) this shit should never have been happening in the first place. Of course it's time for all of this lawlessness to stop.
I feel the same. This sort of sh!t should not be happening, and if 47 weren't in the White House it wouldn't be. We've gotta flip the House and Senate, and then kick 47 out of the White House!
Yes, I read that too. He is NOT of sound mind and somebody needs to do something about it. Maybe JD Vance will decide this is the right time to promote the 25th amendment...
Sadly, I think you're probably right. I just thought maybe Vance might see this as an opportunity to be prez for a bit. He's not going to be elected president in 2028 because face it... he is not a likable person. So this might be his only chance unless Trump has a heart attack or something.
It is, and is the most dangerous yet. He has made an open-ended committment to Netanyahu, which will surely escalate into another war in the Middle East where we have no business. We never used to condone preemptive war.
yes exactly...he told those people he would help them...prices were too high gas was too much. they voted for him expecting him to address THEIR problems...not billionies and give 20 billion to Argentina.
I'm waiting for the leaders and the people of the EU and NATO countries to speak against this unlawful war. People have died today because of 'his' lies, delusions, and need to remain in office. Ditto for his war buddy Netanyahu.
Don't hold your breath, so far all I've seen is comments from several European leaders that Iran should not retaliate, and now the UK may be joining so-called 'regional defensive operations'.
..and I am not holding my breath for Dems to be anything other than their feckless selves either...Rubin mentions Liz Warren in this piece...she omits that Warren, along with many other Democrats, gave Trump a standing ovation when he talked about Iran at the SOTU.
US politicians are so afraid of looking weak on Iran and not afraid of looking weak on our criminal president.
So far I've only seen Spain issue unqualified criticism of Bone Spur's war. Other countries are "waiting to see," etc. etc.
PS: Everyone is so critical of Iran, not knowing that WE created today's monster when we and the UK overthrew Mosadeh in favor of the Shah, in the interests of the oil companies, etc.
Yeah, funny how the US keeps doing that around the world....propping up dictators, mowing down left leaning governments, then using the results as an excuse to invade again..
I have seen already strong statements from European countries....against Iran.
From the Guardian:
'The UK, Germany and France have condemned Iranian attacks on countries in the region, saying Iran must refrain from indiscriminate military strikes.
They did not comment on US and Israeli attacks on Iran.
British prime minister Keir Starmer, French president Emmanuel Macron and German chancellor Friedrich Merz issued a statement Saturday saying their countries didn’t take part in the strikes on Iran but are in close contact with the US, Israel and partners in the region.'
And , already, Jeffries has released his typical feckless statement, saying nothing more, than, you should have asked us first..not a word about the already hundreds of dead civilians or the overt violation of international law...
Odd...I didn't see reports of indiscriminate military strikes by Iran until after we bombed them. Can there be dirt on all these leaders in the Epstein files?
Even though trump couldn't come up with a cogent argument for the necessity of illegally striking Iran, Bret Stephens of The Times, believes he has (he hasn't) in his op-ed "The Case for Striking Iran". Neocons never learn.
We provoked Iran by dropping bombs on them in the past. Not expecting some sort of retaliatory strike is naive at best and more likely stupid. Outside of it being illegal, Trump is doing it for no good reason at all. Iraq II here we are.
You got that right. I got ten bucks sez that Don the Con is in hock up to his pupik to Vlad and/or his cronies. Face it, Don's not maintaining that expensive lifestyle by honest work-- he's supporting it because Vlad and his buddies are lending him the cash. To them it's a good investment.
If it is claimed that he has made such a windfall off of the Office of the Presidency, he could have paid Putin back long ago. Surely there is something else going on there.
Well, Trump is little more than a schoolyard bully, and bullies only pick on people smaller than they are. Like any bully, Trump knows not to mess with Vlad-- and that would probably be true even if Don the Con wasn't busy kissing Vlad's tuchas
The great fog of war. Deliberate, purposeful, pea-souper type, not meant for us to peer through.
War as political theater. An illiterate, incurious, demented oaf in a baseball cap with "USA" emblazoned it ordering the deaths of thousands to satisfy yet unknown voices clamoring for whatever it is they're clamoring for.
The past twenty years have shown conclusively (for those who care about the evidence) that once the rubble stops smouldering, we have virtually no say-so over who rules what, what comes later. The last Iraq conflagration killed hundreds of thousands, yet even then, there were voices piercing through the chaos and dissemblances to ask the decision-makers: "tell me how this ends."
I can discern no such voices anywhere near our own criminal regime flaunting constitutionality, law and common sense at every turn. If they exist, they've been ignored or worse -- suppressed. No one knows the answers. No one can say how this ends.
I remember that Fog of War documentary about Robert McNamara. Also Barbara Tuchman's book, The March of Folly.
It's the looking back, seeing how the horrible consequences of decisions made could have been foreseen and different decisions made. But were not because of human folly.
I'm waiting for the Mission Accomplished banner. Of course, what he will have accomplished are the end of the U.S.'s claim to be a decent country and his solidification of his position as dictator.
Well, at least we just got these reassuring comments from Trump:
"I can go long and take over the whole thing, or end it in two or three days and tell the Iranians: ‘See you again in a few years if you start rebuilding [your nuclear and missile programs]. In any case, it will take them several years to recover from this attack.
Trump also claimed that the Iranians “got close and then pulled back” on talks (100% lie of course) - which were being held in Geneva last week. “I understood from that that they don’t really want a deal,” he said.
The US president told Axios he had a “great” conversation with Benjamin Netanyahu after the strikes, and said he and the Israeli PM were “on the same wavelength”. "
So much for our military disobeying an illegal order. The extra judicial killings in the Caribbean and Pacific are war crimes as well. We wouldn't be seeing this if the feckless Republicans in the Senate refused to convict Trump for an attempted coup. We have to hope that there's a special place in Hell waiting for them, especially for Mitch McConnell.
This is an Israel First War.
Israel is in charge of our Middle East foreign policy.
Russia is in charge of our European foreign policy.
The American people - fodder.
Going to keep aflame my incindiery feelings. Otherwise, despair.
With four family members in combat readiness positions in the military, I too will keep my fury going strong at the imbeciles and incompetents who were allowed/encouraged to start this war, based on nothing but Trump's need to distract from the Epstein scandal.
I hope he dies of natural causes soon.
My thoughts are with your family.
I deeply hope your family is and stays safe.
Our thoughts are with you. May they remain safe.
He definitely has a target on his back.
As a Gold Star niece, I appreciate every day of their service.
I hope he dies (redacted) soon.
As a member of a gold star family (my brother died while serving in the Navy), I hope you don't join the club.
How can the US, the UK, France, et all demand that Iran forego its development of nuclear power, when more globally-bellicose nations like Russia, Israel, North Korea and China have nuclear weapons?
Look what happened to Ukraine after they returned their Soviet-era nuclear weapons to Russia.
And Libya's capitulation; that's what shook Putin's calculations toward the US.
....and of course, Israel, who never publicly admits to having nuclear arms, but everyone knows they do.
Back in 1965 (when I turned 12), Tom Lehrer had a song, "Who's Next?" In the middle of the song we hear
Egypt's gonna ge-et one too
Just to use on you-ou know who!
So Israel's getting tense
Wants one for self defense
The Lord's our shephard says the psalm
But just in case...
We better get the bomb!
60 years have passed since then--well more than enough for Israel to get the bomb.
Because those other nations can shoot back.
Thanks - you make such an important point.
It's overwhelming how long the list of those who benefit - just not the US.
Totally agree!

Jeffries is definitely not the last word on Democratic policy.
Well, he is the leader of House Democrats, and Schumer is no better on this topic (or many others).
Plenty of other Dems, especially from the 'moderate' wing, are expressing similar sentiments...
He did.
Is Jeffries trying out for a role in the fake opposition that autocrats employ to seem legit? That’s how he and Schumer act.

Direct your fury in the correct place. Peaceful Actions speak louder!
'Epic Fury' - could this be more trolling from Trump, knowing the outrage this would provoke?
"epstein fury"
As with all of his other recent actions, murder in the Caribbean, destruction of the White House, vandalism of the Kennedy Center, etc., more distraction from the Epstein files. You are right. He is terrifyingly stupid. Unbelievable.

Unfortunately for us, and the rest of the world. He must be partying hearty tonight. Maybe he will go a little too far.
Meh. He already has gone too far on several occasions that would have gotten him removed by any competent adiminstration. A likely fact is that if we had a competent administration leader, he would never have gotten the position in the first place.

This latest war is not only illegal because it is not authorized by Congress, this unprovoked attack is flagrantly illegal under international law.
That goes for Israel too. Already the US/Israel BFF alliance has killed several dozen Iranian schoolchildren.

update:
At least 108 people were killed, according to the public prosecutor’s office in Minab, many of them schoolgirls between seven and 12 years old.
How horrible! And that our country did this! That we've descended this far!
How fricken awful! That this is what our stupid leaders do!
The rank hypocrisy keeps coming:
Today, "Netanyahu says the strikes will help them “unshackle themselves from tyranny”. (The Guardian)
Was he talking about the people in the Occupied Territories?
It is “high time you come together” and “unite for a historic mission”, he says.
Time for the world to stop genocide in Gaza and apartheid in the West Bank and East Jerusalem?
Why was the last puncutuation a question mark? To paraphrase David Holzman, (posted above) this shit should never have been happening in the first place. Of course it's time for all of this lawlessness to stop.
I thought the sarcasm was obvious. Obviously, this is not what Netanyahu meant, or Trump, or anyone involved with this.
Oops. Missed that.
It's high time the Israelis get rid of Netanyahu! Israel's Trump.
Hitting schools--how AWFUL!!! Thank you Jason for alerting us!
Today is so awful already I can hardly stand it. The hypocrisy is beyond glaring.
I feel the same. This sort of sh!t should not be happening, and if 47 weren't in the White House it wouldn't be. We've gotta flip the House and Senate, and then kick 47 out of the White House!

I have been posting updates from The Guardian and other sources.

He certainly isn't likeable. He makes Spiro Agnew look halfway decent! Well, thank you for that comment! I feel better!
Good luck with that. The rest of the cabinet are loyal toadies, want to keep their positions, and wouldn't go against their master.
This war is another deflection of Trump’s Epstein involvement.
It is, and is the most dangerous yet. He has made an open-ended committment to Netanyahu, which will surely escalate into another war in the Middle East where we have no business. We never used to condone preemptive war.
MAGA used to be against forever wars. Until they weren't.
When was the MAGA cult ever against bullying small countries with wars or their threat?
And they leave Russia alone so it can continue to target Ukraine
if we and America are lucky they still are...hopefully they are still looking for SNAP,medicaid etc.
You would think that gutting SNAP and FEMA would be grossly unpopular

And , already, Jeffries has released his typical feckless statement, saying nothing more, than, you should have asked us first..not a word about the already hundreds of dead civilians or the overt violation of international law...
Odd...I didn't see reports of indiscriminate military strikes by Iran until after we bombed them. Can there be dirt on all these leaders in the Epstein files?
Pretty rich coming from countries now openly supporting the illegal war that has already indiscriminately killed hundreds of civilians....
That ovation was shocking and disturbing at the same time.
When Al Green was ejected just for carrying a sign, the rest of the Democrats should have followed him out in an expression of unity.
Iraq II here we are.
stupid is the important word in your post !
He has a great reason - we’re not talking about Epstein, are we?
That "reason" sucks, especially for our engaged military personnel and the people of Iran. This action is as illegal as hell.
Would be great if White House devoted such attention and perseverance to Ukraine. Why is so tough for trump to get tough with putin?
Puty has the goods on Trumpenstein. Why else does he kiss the Puty ass?
Excellent question
It broke my heart at the time.
Now the US military is a mercenary force for Sunni Arabs to prosecute their centuries-old war against Shiites.
Their "investment" in a corrupt Trump and family is paying off handsomely.
It's the very definition of treason.
I'm waiting for the Mission Accomplished banner. Of course, what he will have accomplished are the end of the U.S.'s claim to be a decent country and his solidification of his position as dictator.
Many Dems (especially the 'moderates') have said little more than, you should have asked us first, so far.
That ought to create a strong, rapid correction, eh?
Ah yes, the two war criminals in collaboration. What could possibly go wrong as a result?
Arrrghhh. He and Netanyahoo are birds of a feather(brain).
In response to Justin, I worry that war is more than a kind of "mess" that can be cleaned up by a Democrat majority in Congress.
The US now owns the terrors of war in the Middle East for generations to come.
