Seeing the Confederate flag anywhere is offensive. Seeing it on display in Washington D.C. is immoral, perverse and traitorous.

Lance or Vance or whatever McMahon just crashed his car. He is the husband of wrastler magnate linda mcmahon, our education secretary, otherwise known as a fake wrestling show biz industry whore along with her toothless (probably now faceless by virtue of a horrible accident) husband. As Maude ALWAYS said, “God will get you for that”. Lordy, how MANY times have I learned that? Thank god I am perfect :) We can do this. Democracy is worth it. If it isn’t, god will get you for that. Hang in there. Don’t hang out with MAGA. God WILL get you for THAT!

Thanks for your work and please keep up the fight. We need every voice to be broadcast loud and clear. Otherwise, I don't want to think about what the next chapter in our history might look like.

Probably no country wants to confront the truth of its own history. Maybe it is more difficult for us because of the persistence of "American exceptionalism." This is a false and pernicious doctrine, but woe to any politician who denies it.

Even Obama talked about the American exceptionalism myth.

Excellent and moving piece.

“This sweeping campaign became known as the Lost Cause. Its corrosive, erroneous message was simple: an inclusive democracy threatens white political and economic power.”

Déjà vu

like I said before, if someone from 1875 came to visit and looked around they would say...hey wait a minute, I thought we lost the war !!?

True. In addition to holding the leaders of the MAGA movement, from Trump on down, we need to hold the followers accountable. Otherwise, we will set the stage for repeating the mistakes after the Civil War. This point is made by a blog https://firstimpressionssecondthoughts.blogspot.com/2026/02/nothing-good-can-come-from-forgiveness.html.

"And we believe that the majority of us who want an inclusive democracy that allows all of us to live up to our potential will prevail."

I'm afraid that my faith is weakened. I'm just not convinced that those of us who want an inclusive democracy are, in fact, in the majority. Or, at least not in terms of numbers among all eligible voters. If we were in the majority, then we would not be in this terrible moment that we're currently in, and Kamala Harris would in fact be the 47th POTUS.

While Donald Trump may not have fully understood the depth of Southern history or the complexities of its political culture, his rise and continued popularity in the region reveal that he has served as a powerful instrument of Southern retribution.

Trump has become a vessel for long-standing grievances and a catalyst for those seeking to push back against perceived cultural, economic, and political slights. His rhetoric and policies, intentionally or not, have given voice to a collective desire for payback and restoration of lost status among many Southern voters.

In this way, Trump’s legacy is inseparable from the South’s ongoing struggle with its past and its quest for renewed influence, even if he remains largely unaware of the deeper historical forces he has come to embody.

Agreed: "moral and political catastrophe." Now as it was back then. We the People need to WAKE UP.
