It will be women who save this country

L B Rose's avatar

Absolutely! It's why men demean them. Women have both brains and compassion. Also better communication skills. Jen Rubin personifies these traits! Please keep writing!

bitchybitchybitchy's avatar

Many women have brains and compassion. Then you have the womtn who enable and profit from supporting Trump.

It's Come To This's avatar

Well, SOME men do. The smarter ones know better.

Susan Wladaver-Morgan's avatar

It will have to be the women. The men either can’t see through his lies or want to learn how to lie as easily as he does.

Charles's avatar

Susan, I believe there are large numbers of men who see through Trump's lies. There are large numbers of men who are as appalled by Trump's vindictiveness and cruelty as any woman. I would be careful with broad generalizations.

Susan Wladaver-Morgan's avatar

I hope you are right. Such men do exist, even in Congress, but so far not nearly enough have been willing to confront him.

Tim Matchette's avatar

Could not agree more.

FVera's avatar

You aren’t kidding….and we will never get the credit.

James Quinn's avatar

I’d like to believe you, but first you have to explain why so many of you still voted for Trump in 2024.

Mtugendhat@me.com's avatar

Sadly, racism, xenophobia, homophobia, and transphobia are also factors. Women don’t get a pass on any of this. It is women who have been leading the book banning movement. Look at the idiotic and amoral women in the regime leadership. Yes, there are also so many women with great compassion and stunning factual knowledge and leadership skills. But it does not serve us to generalize.

Nay's avatar

Trump women give women a bad name. They are disgusting. Leading that pack are Noem and Bondi. Proof that power and money replace empathy and compassion.

RRiveter's avatar

Absolutely, just as ICE has given all law enforcement an incredibly bad name. Yes, there are bad cops, no doubt, but the majority follow the rules, follow the procedures, and do not beat the shit out of or kill people because of imagined insults, exaggerated fears of injury, dark skin color of the victim, or too much stupidity and testosterone. I'm not the only one to say this. The head of the Minneapolis police said the same, and they were in the thick of it. Interesting read: AP did a review of some of ICE agents' backgrounds. Felons, violent offenders, domestic violence especially, etc etc. I don't know how AP got their identities, maybe undercover sleuthing, but they did and they published their results. What a surprise. ICE whistleblowers are adding their comments to lack of training as well. The secret, illegal, violent agency continues.

More men voted from the wannabe dictator than women because more men identify with him and his misogyny, and his puffed-up masculinity.

Hubert Thomason's avatar

Gender differences in voting as expressed in polls clearly show the male preference for Trump. The reasons likely include a masculine over-identification with an imagined strongman, along with other factors. But here’s the problem for women: “A majority of white women continued to support Trump in all 2024 election surveys. Both Edison and VoteCast data show 53% of white women backing Trump, compared to 60% of white men (a seven point gender gap). Across both surveys, white women’s support for Trump has ranged from 52 to 55% from 2016 to 2024. Similar majorities of white women have backed the Republican presidential nominee in every election since 2004.” Think about this: 53% of white women who voted, voted for Trump! I can’t begin to understand this. I wouldn’t go so far as to say white women handed Trump the election but they were a significant factor. If this particular dynamic doesn’t reverse in the midterms and again in the subsequent presidential election we are screwed. So… can someone, preferably a woman, explain this to me? The only explanation I’ve heard from a white woman so far (needs clarification and context) is that many white women have an impulse favoring purity as a virtue and that notion about purity extends to racial purity and openly surfaces when they contemplate the possibility that their daughters and sons might marry outside the (so called) white race. Obviously this does not include all white women - just a worrisome majority big enough to swing an election.

Tim Matchette's avatar

Well written and very telling. But a lot of women voters who voted for this vile felon were just plain lazy to really look into who this swine is. Bad officers get elected by good people who either do not vote or do not address the issues. Ignorance is bliss, as they say.

James Quinn's avatar

You will pardon me if that seems more like a rationalization than a reason.

Hubert Thomason's avatar

I agree white women were the biggest disappointment in the last presidential election and I can’t understand it. “A majority of white women continued to support Trump in all 2024 election surveys. Both Edison and VoteCast data show 53% of white women backing Trump, compared to 60% of white men (a seven point gender gap). Across both surveys, white women’s support for Trump has ranged from 52 to 55% from 2016 to 2024. Similar majorities of white women have backed the Republican presidential nominee in every election since 2004.”

Carol Lama's avatar

Yes, Margaret, it will be up to the women. Women raise the children, keep hearth and home, and creatively fulfill career responsibilities. Haven't we been referred to as "the better half" (by men)? Weak men become misogynists because they fear they can't measure up to what women have accomplished and will continue to accomplish. Witness the current regime's attempts to deny us our rights and put us "in our place"--the kitchen and the bedroom. Women's understanding of what is right for humanity will be the country's saving grace.

James Quinn's avatar

Speaking as an old white guy who spent all of his professional life in elementary education working with and for a number of remarkable women, I partially agree. But that doesn’t explain the Trumpchicks - Leavitt, Bondi, Noem, McMahon, at al. ,

RRiveter's avatar

It's all about power and identity. If you read about the above stated women's backgrounds, they have always had self-doubts, performed terribly or just adequately in their jobs/professions, and so now, have been given positions of extraordinary authority to flex their lady muscles and make their inadequate, self-doubting personas important. Bondi has been building up to this for over a decade with her lobbying efforts, appearances on Fox News, and the ridiculous Trump Univ. She went to a low level law school, had many self-doubts, according to people who knew her for years, and wasn't even sure she wanted to go into the law; hated being in the courtroom but she was a prosecutor, who lives in courtrooms. She's had many of her fellow FL jurists file ethics violations against her, so she really had little choice but to get out of FL positions and move elsewhere, or work at Walgreen's. Noem has always been a chump in whatever she found herself doing. Cheated and cheating on her long-term husband, shooting puppies, running South Dakota as if she owned it. Ask the Native Americans in South Dakota how they felt about her, and what they did to combat her extraordinary accusations against their tribes. I'll do it for you: they forbid her to put one toe on their reservations, all of the reservations in the state, and there are many. Leavitt? A total weirdo, again only on Trump's radar because of her affiliation with Fox as an "intern" with the past awful press secy, as well as her daddy who is a big Repub donor. Leavitt is an absolute idiot, and says the stupidest things, and also has a hair-trigger temper. Not a good look for a press secy.

James Quinn's avatar

"It's all about power and identity.”

One could say that about millions of men and women both. These women all seem to share Trump’s utter lack of the capacity for empathy, which speaks of more than simple issues of power and identity.

RRiveter's avatar

Well, not really. In order to be power hungry, empathy is not part of the equation. That's my point. You leave your possible good sides by the road when all you care about is establishing yourself as the authority figure who presumably no one can challenge. Trump has provided this channel of opportunity to these do-nothing women, and they jumped at it. And, I'm a woman, so this is not misogynist commentary, but a recognition of what can happen when you feel you are not very competent, have many self-doubts, have performed badly in other positions, and know that you have to give up whatever good you have left in you to grab power in order to vindicate your past failures. Of course, many men have this issue as well, but these ladies are in positions of great power, and are doing great damage. And why? Because of stupidity, lack of knowledge of their jobs, lack of caring, and yes, empathy.

James Quinn's avatar

And if one never had a 'good side'?

My wife liked the Valentine's Day card I found for her... Cover reads, "Happy Valentine's Day To My Wife, The Brains Of This Operation." :-)

They are NOW, except for the few who are actively danaging it -- Bondi, Noem, Gabbard, McMahon, Rollins, Wiles, Lake, McLaughlin, Leavitt, Stefanik, Britt, Blackburn, Fischer, Lummis, Collins, Foxx, Biebert -- we SEE YOU.

Sally Fell's avatar

The men certainly have messed it up!

Hiro's avatar

Yes, Margaret. Indeed. Let's rally around Governor Spanberger for presidency in 2028, the first woman president. This is more fitting than anytime now that she can redeem Epstein victims. DEMs male leaders, please this time unite under Spanberger.

Wade Baynham's avatar

Thank you for highlighting Gov. Spanberger and her truth-filled, clear and no-nonsense State of the Union. It is a great gift to have you continue to draw our attention to people who actually care about American Democracy and the people of the world. What a contrast...

Daniel Solomon's avatar

NOT A WORD ABOUT PEDOPHELIA!

Trump's Achilles heel.

Shout it constantly.

Wade Baynham's avatar

Thank you. We will continue to shine a light and advocate for the survivors. Trump is the head of the rotten Epstein class, and we will never forget.

Moreen Halmo's avatar

Great column today. The way you describe Gov. Spanberger and how she is a "model" for new, exciting democrats running for office should be heard nation-wide. I have a great deal of respect for her.

Ashley Montague's avatar

Senator Alex Padilla also gave a fantastic response to the SOTU in Spanish. It's definitely worth a listen.

Sara Toye's avatar

As a Virginian, I am so proud of my governor! As an American, ditto!

Thomas Boardman's avatar

Thank you for a breath of clean, fresh air. There is so much to be angered about but you helped me see some of the vast amount of good happening in America today. I needed that! Sometimes I just have to step back and inhale the goodness. Again, thank you, Jennifer!

Cindy Schaufenbuel's avatar

My favorite part of Hilary Knight’s response to questions about the Trump/Patel/men’s team incident is that she said “it’s not my responsibility” to explain others’ bad behavior.

Robert Manz's avatar

I agree about Spanberger. I hope she will be our next president. I also hope she and other governors are prepared to preempt Trump’s planned coup/executive order taking presidential control of elections. Crunch time is coming.

Cindy Schaufenbuel's avatar

Democrats would be insane to run a woman again in 2028, much as it pains me to say it.

Steve 218's avatar

We fielded and elected a Black president. The progressive party may well do the same for a woman, a final smash to the glass ceiling.

Anne-Louise Luccarini's avatar

Just a suitable president would be good. And just look at the talent in the age group 35 - 60! The crystal clarity of Governor Spanberger's three-questions technique!

donna woodward's avatar

Yes. Every time we say "A woman can't be elected," we need to remember that Obama won two elections.

He had super-savvy campaign managers and Kamala didn't. We don't count Hilary as a loser because it's very likely the Russians wont the 2016 election for the putative US winner.

Steve 218's avatar

Don't forget James Comey's assassination with "but her emails" attack, which like the many Benghazi attacks finished up basically with nothing.

Democratic AGs have been wargaming and planning scenarios. Incredibly sad and scary that they feel they have to do this, but I'm glad they strategically are thinking ahead. https://www.msn.com/en-us/politics/government/how-dem-attorneys-general-are-war-gaming-to-push-back-on-trump-election-meddling/ar-AA1WT7Ha (Original article was from Politico.)

What a stark contrast in style, seriousness, empathy, honesty and patriotism. We so desperately need a non-narcissistic, non-bullying, non-mysogynistic, non-corrupt adult in the White House.

FVera's avatar

Great post this morning. The White House occupant blathered for so long on purpose. He knew that fewer people would hear the Democrats response. That’s why it is important that we share the Governor’s remarks widely.

Steve 218's avatar

People who wanted to hear the response/rebuttal stayed up (no problem in any but the Eastern Time Zone). We were not disappointed. Short, definitive, and to the point.

Skepticat's avatar

He always blathers and lies ad nauseum, and his only reason is because he can—and he loves the sound of his own voice.

Wayne Deslaurier's avatar

Oddly (not) until this moment legacy news, which I watch daily, has had not one mention or comment about the Democratic rebuttal. Note to self, remember to record them going forward.

Thank you for an excellent summary!

Steve 218's avatar

The "free press" has shot themselves in the foot with their obeisance to Trump. They are no longer viable in presentation of the truth. Mainstream media is primarily owned by five corporations or individuals, all who have other interests that need funding. Guess who will give it to them if they don't anger him by speaking the truth.

Linda Healey's avatar

Bravo for highlighting Spamberger’s speech so well. Double bravo for the women’s hockey team, whose Olympic record is indeed heroic. And cheers for your own writing and crafting of your daily posts!

Many of whom should be able to move to the front, but the old fogies, who do nothing but collect their salaries and benefits, will just not let go. I think there should be age limits and/or competency tests on anyone over a certain age.

Bill Carstensen's avatar

We Virginians are very proud of our new governor. This speech is a model of how Democrats need to proceed. Get people to analyze what’s really happening to them instead of listening to the bullshit from DC.

I have sent this via every means I have to everyone I know.

Keep resisting!!

Judy Guenther's avatar

Gov Spanberger deserves to be highlighted and applauded. It’s great to see the intelligence, experience, and capabilities of younger people in politics. She spoke so well.

Anne-Louise Luccarini's avatar

Who appointed her to make the rebuttal?

Douglas Mackay's avatar

Thanks for highlighting the success of the women’s team and the contrast with the men’s without bringing up Patel’s pathetic pandering. Maybe in your next article you can highlight Sen. Padilla’s speech. Every Republican only either repeats the same refrain from Trump or denigrates the democrats (or a Clinton). Nothing original, inspiring, thoughtful, or intelligent.
