Thank God there are a few who are helping to stem the more extreme efforts to undermine the rule of law in our country. What the current administration is doing defies everything that made the US a democracy.

Nancy Karam's avatar

And, God willing, there should be more on board before the week is over!

The story needs telling loudly:

This is class warfare with the rich destroying our federal government! TAX those rich bastards who are buying our government - who are destroying the federal government and causing so many of our problems; tax them at a rate that they can no longer engage in government destroying shenanigans. Google says: "The top income tax rate reached above 90% from 1944 through 1963, peaking in 1944, when top taxpayers paid an income tax rate of 94% on their taxable income." Anything over $10 million a year, or maybe $1 million a year, should be taxed at 90% with no loopholes. Then billionaires would still have plenty of money but they wouldn't have SO MUCH to be able to buy elections or presidents. IT IS TIME TO TAX THE RICH APPROPRIATELY.

😎

I took a job at the IRS in 1985, because I needed a job. I stayed because I saw the disparities between rich and poor. I became indignant over the unfairness of the system. Wealthy people taking advantage of every loophole while poor Jon Doe wage earners have no ability to skirt the system. They cannot underreport their income. I started my career in Collectiom and what I found was even worse were the people and corporations that refused to pay and used the bankruptcy laws and laws that shield the individuals from personal responsibility when their corporations fail to pay their employment taxes. Those are called trust fund taxes…money withheld from employees paychecks in trust that never get handed over to Uncle Sam.

After spending 15 years there, I moved into Research where I learned to use statistical software and predictive analytics. I became even more incensed at the unfairness. I retired as an executive in 2016 thinking I had seen it all. Clearly, I never saw the likes of DOGE to coming to help those tax cheats and make the system even less fair.

Elizabeth's avatar

Could you write an article for a magazine, an OP ED, or write a book about your experience? You experience and observations are important and all those wage earners who voted for MAGA need to understand how the tax system works against their interest and that is its getting worse.

Nay's avatar

Actually I have thought writing something many times over the years. I always said I would. What really made me angry back in those days was that I never heard of people not paying their taxes and certainly no one in my family or circle of friends failed to pay theirs. I guess now is the time.

Another problem is the IRS data and more importantly the systems and mainframes. I believe DOGE is in over their heads. The programming language is older than these whippersnappesrs’parents and maybe even grand parents. Same with SSI. Johnson said “the data doesn’t lie.”

They have no idea what all those numerical transactions mean. The data may not necessarily lie, but as I used to tell my statisticians, economists and analysts, “ Know thy data.” You can’t build AI if you don’t know what the frickin data means!!! They will break both systems or they will just lie about it.

Priscilla Johnstone's avatar

Excellent suggestion. We the People need to be educated on how our tax systems actually work for the wealthy; then we need to change the system to make certain that everyone pays a fair share. Right now our Congress is controlled by corporate & wealthy donors- we are NOT being represented fairly.

There are a large number of Americans who never cared to learn critical thinking skills, and are unable to learn from the mistakes of others. They do not "get it" until it directly affects them. They dislike or outright hate people who have made the time and effort to actually learn something. Gutting the Dept of Education is part of a strategy to make Americans more stupid, and unable to think for themselves. How the economy and tax system work are too difficult to understand, and so are not worth their time. It's easier to believe someone who tells them "America is corrupt, you're getting ripped off and taken advantage of"

Corey Rothemeyer's avatar

Agreed.

What fascinates me about all this willful ignorance is that I vividly remember learning, in MS, that social media and wikipedia were unacceptable sources for research papers. We were also taught how to identify a reputable source in the media versus one that is not. Granted, I was in during Middle School from 2000 - 2003 & graduated HS in 2006.

We need paper audits in at least the seven swings states.

Between Elon and Russia we have the right to question the validity of the tabulation machines against the paper copies.

Elon has always said that any machine can be hacked. Please watch the videos attached and then call your Secretary of State and your Attorney General.

Can you write this up with more details for Democrats?

Nay's avatar

I will try. I did write to my senators and tried to explain. It is complicated stuff. I also wrote to Judge Kotelly who lifted the ban protecting the data. The implications here are ginormous. Our representatives haven’t got a clue. Regardless of party.

patricia's avatar

Warren has had a fair plan for years.....unless we address wealth inequality and remove the electoral college this country has no hope of survival.

I agree Senator Warren has a plan and a good one. However there will always be cheaters

This, after the chuck schumer voting news, made me feel a little better. Just seeing that someone understands the constitution AND has the knowledge, confidence, and gumption to uphold it!

Steve 218's avatar

Chuck Schumer caved, getting no concessions for Democrats. He's too weak for the fight that we have before us, and should be replaced with a more dynamic and vocal individual.

KnockKnockGreenpeace's avatar

I've gone back and forth on the shutdown issue; we're a federal worker household and have even more at stake. Seeing what we've seen from the inside, we believe that a shutdown would allow the Loser administration to permanently close agencies. Doge, since President Musk is "not" a federal employee, could just keep rolling along, unwatched and unchecked. Nobody would get paid. Nobody would even have to be let go. The jobs and the services to the public would simply disappear.

I see that Dems really are between a rock and a hard place. I'm not to thrilled with Mr. Schumer's resistance efforts lately, but I think he actually is making the right call. For now.

Steve 218's avatar

The problem with this way of thinking is that with or without a shutdown, Trump will do exactly the same things anyway if it suits him. This includes closing agencies, firing government employees, and cutting funding for things that he doesn't like.

KnockKnockGreenpeace's avatar

It's not a way of thinking for us; it's survival.

Steve 218's avatar

Understood, though the point is, with Trump, you get the same things either way.

Steve 218's avatar

The point is, with Trump, you'll get the same thing either way.

Jennifer Rabuchin's avatar

Schumer had a choice between letting the Devil win, and the Devil winning anyway. The Republinazis made the bill so bad they knew the Dems would reject it and let government shut down. Which would pave the way for them to destroy all government agencies, which is the goal of project 2025. Pretty certain that the evil architects of 2025 put this idea in to the head of our Know Nothing PINO His administration is corruption on steroids, and surrounded himself with other sociopaths who are happy to let the country burn down as long as they are the last ones standing. So this is like the story that DT is fond of quoting about the kind woman who takes the frozen snake into her home, only to have it kill her after it thaws out

KnockKnockGreenpeace's avatar

I read Chuck Schumer's reasoning for his vote, and part of it was to safeguard Washington, D.C., from being ravaged by Trump while the doors of government are closed. It's not just about you; it's not just about Trump. It certainly is about federal workers being locked out of their jobs, perhaps permanently. They'd just leave the agencies closed, to starve. I can't blame Schumer for being stuck with two rotten choices.

It helps us to see through your eyes. If we have a "secure" job and live in a "safe" state like CA, easy for us to react emotionally and condemn Schumer. They "baited" us and we fell for it. We need cooler heads to see the long game that they are playing. Best regards to you, and all of us

KnockKnockGreenpeace's avatar

I surely appreciate that acknowledgment. The same goes for me and my blind spots--we don't know what they are until we know. These days, we have to help each other get the big picture. And we will! Thanks to the Contrarian and right-thinking people ... "thinking" being the operative word.

Sen. Chris Murphy is fighting the good fight, he would make an excellent leader.

Priscilla Johnstone's avatar

Absolutely - we need a strong fighter in the Senate; Schumer doesn’t have the heart for it. Time to step aside Chuck.

22 Republican senators and dozens of Republican House members voted to fund Ukraine. Some of them call Trump a liar. I say he was Putin's Manchurian candidate.

I firmly believe that the Dear Leader is a Russian asset. Why else would he be doing exactly what Putin wants? It cannot be a coincidence. I wish more people would be investigating this obvious link. What does Putin have on him?

Daniel Solomon's avatar

Trump was Putin's Manchurian candidate. Yesterday, he ordered DOD to plan for an invasion of Panama. Adventures in Greenland can break NATO. Attacks our most loyal and trusted allies, i.e. Canada, Mexico, UK, EU. Markets crashing. All to the benefit of Putin and to the detriment of our country.

Several former KGB agents swear that Trump was compromised. No doubt that Russia aided his campaigns in 2016, 2000 and 2024. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Russian_interference_in_the_2024_United_States_elections#:~:text=Russia's%20efforts%20represented%20the%20most,society%20and%20foster%20anti%2DAmericanism.

Thom Hartmann has covered this several times. Last week several Russian agents were quoted to that extent. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vjOwSNay4R0 A number of US authors say the same. I really fear for her and the other judges who rule rationally and fearlessly against these cowardly edicts the Orange One emits. He hasn't really cranked up his stochastic terrorism machine, but with his utter lack of impulse control, I expect him to do it at any time. Then there is the issue of him slow-balling compliance or just quietly ignoring judicial orders. It would be nice if you could occasionally report on whether or not he is complying. Thanks, Jen!

It's Come To This's avatar

This. None of these foul bastards have indicated they will obey a judge's ruling against them. They promise to take everything right to the Supreme Court. And I am sick and tired of finding out that a fundamental human right, the basic rule of law or simple common decency either just got upheld---or denied---by 1 (or 2) justices reaching back to the Puritan era to defend their rulings.

In Italy, an entire generation of judges had to hire hundreds of bodyguards just to protect them and their families from mafia reprisals. Many got blown up, machine-gunned. Today, it's done by surrogate doxing -- and suddenly little-dicked yahoos in buzz-cuts and camos with BIG guns suddenly appear on your front lawn.

Our republic hangs by the slenderest of threads.

KnockKnockGreenpeace's avatar

Yes, I, too, would like to take all my troubles to the Supreme Court. Expedited, please.

I was going to name my next cat Fiona Hill, but Beryl Howell is giving her a run for her money. Think I'll get two cats! Judge Howell is a treasure and a hero!

What a grand idea! I have a friend whose all-dark-grey, grey-eyed cat is named "Lester Holt".

Stan Wakefield's avatar

Wouldn't it be great if all sitting judges (are you listening Supreme Court?) had such clear understanding of constitutional law and the courage to apply it to whomever chooses to violate it? No doubt the Felon-in-Chief and his cronies will mount an assault on her which will encourage the MAGAs to make death threats. Since the MAGAs have no intellectual capacity to think for themselves, death threats are all they have to express themselves.

She is very courageous and legally speaks truth to power in such a competent manner. The Republicans give us Clarence Thomas and Samuel Alito.......I must say this. The most vocal, effective and fearless opposition to this attempted coup, with some obvious exceptions, are from the female gender.

Nancy Karam's avatar

We don't take crap from anyone!!!

Louise's avatar

I've been noticing the very same thing for a while now. There are even a couple (perhaps only 1) of Republican women who try to stand up. Their reward is to be viciously threatened and abused until they cave.

Vicky stow's avatar

We need more people like her to stand up and speak up!!

I saw that Elon wrote on his infamous X site that judges that find against the Trump Emperor Fascist government should be impeached! Maybe Elon could read John Locke, assuming he can actually read, what Locke had to say about the law. Locke believed the law is to expand the freedoms of the people, not constrain freedoms. Unfortunately Trump wants no laws, except his and Elon does not know the first thing about democracy or its principles. Judge Howell is standing up for the law, too bad the MSM is not and mostly is hiding because they fear Trump.

Ellie still in the mix in 26's avatar

The Musk rat wants to rule the world, so I doubt he would care anything about Locke. The short-fingered vulgarian wants to rule half the world, giving the other have to Vlad.

C. King's avatar

Poor Musk--he cannot find a way to jail people who don't buy his cars.

Darlene D's avatar

Thank you Judge Howell!!

Jaimie Dempsey's avatar

It's way past time for all defenders of our democracy and freedom to cease calling the Trumpers and Muskets "conservative." Call them "Royalists" or "Monarchists" or counter-revolutinaries or even "Tories" (in the sense of the American Revolution), because that's what their real agenda is. It's not "Alice in Wonderland" they're after, but pre-revolution America ruled by oligarchic landowners, slaveholders, corrupt nobility, and a Church-anointed king with divine rights to legislate, adjudicats, and execute as *he* sees fit. No doubt Trump, in his febrile mind, is issuing indisputable royal decrees rather than executive orders subject to reversal by judicial review or cancelation by a freely elected successor.

Vive la révolution!

Gloria Marconi's avatar

Calling them fascists or neo-Nazis would be more accurate.

Jaimie Dempsey's avatar

Agreed. But that places them solidly in the 20th century. I'm suggesting they're goal is to reach further back than that, perhaps even before the Enlightenment or the Industrial Revolution, when rich, Christian white men were recognized as the only "rightful" rulers of the world; and governance was split between the Church and its sanctified royalty.

Chris Dortch's avatar

Unfortunately what this means is that every Republican in Congress is complicit in these acts of treason. If they weren't this sledgehammering of our government would not have been allowed to take happen in the first place. So what are we going to do about it? There's been so much damage done, that not even Rupert Murdoch-owned media (Fox "News", Wall Street Journal) can support it, let alone cover it up. So this is a one-shot deal for the Republicans. If they aren't able to destroy our democracy, their former voters who feel betrayed and have had their lives turned upside down will finally see the light. The GOP doesn't care about them. We have to stand strong against this corruption. Please go to ActBlue and help the three Democratic candidates running for the House special elections April 1. We win those, we get the House back, and that's a huge first step.

Nancy Karam's avatar

I have ten postcards ready to mail out tomorrow, March 15th, to storm PINO's snail mail. Every one of them tells him exactly what we all know: "You are: a liar; a traitor; a loser; insane; a felon; dumb; a moron, etc. Are you all ready to "dump on drumpf"?

NanceeM's avatar

There are 2 special elections 4/1, both in FL in very red districts. Meanwhile in just over a week, 2 Democratic congressman have died. Even if those seats are ultimately refilled by Democrats, they will be open for months. No huge step is coming.

Shawn Murphy's avatar

Thank you Judge Howell for honoring the rule of law and continuing to uphold our constitution.

MC Glass's avatar

Judge Howell's judgements are rightfully held up for ALL to HEAR. Thank you for amplifying these reminders of what is happening in the courts.

C. King's avatar

To step back and watch the MOVEMENT OF POWER in a democracy and a tri-part system is fascinating. The executive branch abuses it. Congress cedes it, and even members of SCOTUS have shown clear signs of nasty corruption; but then it shifted to the "lower" courts--and look at this Judge Howell! But the power also has been shifting slowly back to "the people" for awhile now, and now we see it flowing easily through everyone from sign-holding/protesters, to government workers, to boycotters (hello, Mr. Musk! Meet the American spirit, not to mention in the rest of the world!); to town hall attendees, to at least some of the Press--thank you Jen and all who are involved in the court proceedings. We also should thank the other heads of state and people who are saying "no" to the baby bully.

I would say he cannot stop the entire world, but then I remember the nuclear codes. There have been suggestions HERE in this comments section about the whole thing turning Putin--which means truthful people start mysteriously and violently dying. But I think MAGA (whatever that means at present) must realize that there is so much power alive and awake in The People (finally) that "turning Putin" would only get the "wrong" people tarred and feathered and run out of town on a rail; or even flying out a high-rise window.

I would like to ask if you, Jen, or anyone around you have received threats and/or extortion/ bribes; and I think the Press should ask even Shumer the same question. Suspicion is high in such cases--not jumping to knowledge, but high, nevertheless. Questions are ALIVE with power, which is why we see so many in the GOP who won't face them. Anyone in the courts or Congress especially should TELL the country every time they experience extortion or threats and go on the offensive about tracking them down. The practice is a despicable part of this whole mess that similarly despicable people have put the rest of us in. KUDOS to Howell--a picture of courage.

Jennifer Rabuchin's avatar

In another great Schumer deal, he agreed to trade appellate appointments for lower level judicial seats. Those decisions, of course, can be appealed.
