It's ALL been murder. He has done nothing, they have provided 0 evidence, to let them off the hook for _any_ of these attacks. They deserve no benefit of the doubt at this point. They are treating innocent people like characters in a video game.
Reprehensible, indeed. We can compare such acts to video games; what we cannot compare it to is the direct loss of life and family sustainability. There is no loss of life in the video games. Those games, in my viewpoint, are reprehensible on their own. It makes me wonder: how many of us those responsible for the innocent deaths were raised on such video games?
Love this, but it was an established saying before Lincoln & can't be attributed to him. It can be traced back to a remark by Scottish philosopher Thomas Carlyle in 1841, although it has been used ABOUT Lincoln since 1883, and frequently used as if he said it himself. https://quoteinvestigator.com/2016/04/14/adversity/
But, tRump will pardon him... We, The People have to rise up and say with one voice this is illegal, this is intolerable. We have to hold Congress accountable. Here is my letter to my 3 Congress Critters (all Democrats) yesterday:
I am sure you are aware of the events over the weekend where numerous people - members of Congress on the Armed Services Committees, former high-level JAGs - the JAG Working Group, and numerous commentators on various social media have been pointing out that tRump’s extra-judicial killings in the Caribbean following Hegseth’s no-quarter orders are actually murder and war crimes. I have been outraged ever since this first came out, but finding out that that our service men killed a couple of survivors clinging to a piece of debris floating in the water is simply awful and astonishing. I was 14 and delivered the papers in the days following the massacre at My Lai… This has the same deeply disturbing and gut wrenching feel to it. This is a moment for loud righteous indignation. I do not envy you having to sit there with the rethuglicans who will try to paper over this, but there are cracks in the MAGA facade and perhaps now is a rare chance to make common cause with a few on the other side who are starting to see the light. Here is a link to a video discussion between Joyce Vance and Ryan Goodman giving their expert legal assessment of the mess the regime has gotten us into.
Stephen, that’s probably true, but then let’s go for murder. The possibility of a pardon should not excuse us from bringing the full force of the law down on Hegseth and anyone else involved.
Hegseth will, almost certainly, be indicted by the ICC for either a war crime or crime against humanity. Trump's pardon will have no effect under international law. This may affect Hegseth’s future travel plans.
The US is not a member of ICC. Prosecution of Hegseth will have to be done within the US system. From my pov, Hegseth will probably be thrown under the bus by DJT (in order to distance himself from his complicit knowledge of double tap) in an impeachment proceeding. Refer to Miles Taylor comments in his Defiance substack)
It doesn't matter whether or not the US is a member of ICC. Hegseth can still be arrested if he tries to go to any country that is a member. And if that happens a large number of Americans will applaud.
If he's tried in a US court, he goes to jail here, unless, of course, the Orange Monster pardons him. But he won't be able to go anywhere, except, possibly, Mar-a-Lardo.
one small hopeful note - maybe it will make them more reluctant to harass the generals that signed the letter "u don't have to execute illegal orders" because it will make their crimes more visible....
He can if the Senate fails to convict by a two thirds majority, Patricia. Remember, impeachment in the House is just the first step in removing a lawless president.
He never should have become SecDef. He should have been bounced to the curb after the Signal fiasco. Now he's guilty of accessory to murder. He needs to have his passport confiscated. Maybe bustin' rocks for a few years will do him some good. It would certainly do our country some good..
Hegseth must be prosecuted for war crimes. Period. He can’t in the name of the United States order the murder (let’s call it what it is) of stranded people in the sea after illegally blasting their boat—was it just a fishing boat? or are we supposed to believe the pathologically lying president that it was a “drug boat”? Even if the latter, where’s the proof? Lock Hegseth up. Like his boss, he’s a walking crime wave.
Of course Trump will pardon him, and the ICC can't extradite him from here. BUT if he sets foot in a NATO country that does belonf to the ICC, or even flies over their air space, he'll soon be on his way to the Hague. That's why Netanyahu alway has to fly by very roundabout routes when he travels.
What they're doing is the old song of making up the facts to suit the case. The same thing happened when the invasion of Iraq was pushed by Cheney and his sidekick Wolfowitz. Neither of them were tried for their criminality either.
The Us will never answer to war crimes as we do not recognize the ability of the UN or any other global. Once nation. This type of action, along with the real possibility of Trump ordering military against citizens is why my career Green Beret stepson retired at 23 years after Trump was elected. He was a Colonel, multiple tours all over the world but in the end, keeping the oath he swore.
It is true that the US gives no regard at all to the UN or to international law generally.
Just a few days ago, the UN voted on a resolution against torture and other cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment that was adopted by a vote of 169 votes in favor, with only three countries against: the United States, and our authoritarian friends Israel and Argentina.
The US has not ratified the Rome Statute and is not a member of the ICC (same for Israel). The US is technically a signatory of the ICJ but it withdrew from compulsory jurisdiction in 1986.
Meanwhile, the US's BFF Israel uses US funds and weapons to bomb fishing boats and kill the civilian passengers all the time off the coast of Gaza, both before and after October 2023. Civilian killings by Israel, with US support, happen so often they rarely make the news here.
You’re right, Jason. The failure of the US to accept the jurisdiction of the ICC or the International Court of Justice ranks right up there with slavery and the internment of Japanese Americans during WWII as monuments to American hypocrisy.
It would be a good thing, but I am not holding my breath. Disdain for international law has been largely a bipartisan exercise, although of course this administration has pushed that into overdrive. The ICC has been around for over 20 years, over Dem and GOP admins.
The conversation alone is sickening, because most of us get that the difference is like that between potEYto and poTAHto. But if that weren't enough, there's this little tidbit The Daily Beast uncovered: a tweet (from the asswipe's "personal" X account) showing a drawing of Franklin the Turtle (a series of kiddie books by Canadian writer Paulette Bourgeois about a gentle turtle at his first day of school, celebrating Christmas and the like).
Kegsbreath's cutesy little version features Franklin in full kit co-splaying a Venezuelan version of Apocalypse Now, with little Franklin perched on the edge of a helicopter seat, blowing up a boat of "narco-terrorists" with a bazooka.
Shits and giggles from a loser who may well be brought to The Hague at some point soon on war crime charges, since murdering survivors of an attack after the fact has never been thought of well since World War II on. In its cryptic, clueless way, the Pentagon tenderly refers to this as a 'double-tap' (like a game of tag, I suppose).
All this in time for Christmas 🎄 festivities. Give me Ebenezer Scrooge any old day...
Hegseth is playing strong man as if he were in a video game - and using a kid's character to pump himself up and make light of his murders is nauseating.
The chances of getting any facts on this action from the Administration are zero. It’s time to investigate who the soldiers were who carried this operation out and ask them directly if they truly believe it was a legal order. Further, how aware are they of the laws they have broken. Put the spotlight on them so, hopefully, others will begin to see what Senator Mark Kelly et al are pointing out.
The "soldiers" are low-hanging fruit. Go after the officers and commanders who authorized and allowed the actions. Go after the members of the administration who called for them.
We know what WE say. Pressure the members of the Senate and House Armed Services Committees, who can stop this now?
GOP senators to join Democrats in investigating Pete Hegseth ‘kill everybody’ allegations
GOP Senator Roger Wicker, Chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, and Democratic Senator Jack Reed, announced the investigation in a joint statement.
"...a long-awaited phone call between the White House and Caracas aimed at defusing the crisis carried a blunt message for strongman Nicolás Maduro: You can save yourself and those closest to you, but you must leave the country now, sources familiar with the exchange told the Miami Herald.
"The call — which The New York Times reported took place last week — quickly reached an impasse as it became clear that the two sides’ positions were far apart. Washington demanded that Maduro and his top allies leave Venezuela immediately to allow the restoration of democratic rule, while regime leaders proposed handing political control to the opposition but retaining command of the armed forces.
"According to the sources, the U.S. message to Maduro was direct: Safe passage would be guaranteed for him, his wife Cilia Flores, and his son only if he agreed to resign right away."
Too bad the threat message wasn't sent in the other direction. Venezuela would be better off without Maduro, but the US would be even better off without Trump.
The evidence of crimes against humanity keeps piling up. I hope that when our national nightmare is over, the new powers that be don’t sweep these crimes under the rug and in some “national healing” frenzy “let bygones be bygones”. There MUST be accountability! Can’t wait for Nurnberg 2.0. But then again, not holding my breath.
When Nixon left, he was followed by a Republican who swept the crimes under the table and pardoned as much as he could.
When Reagan left, he was followed by a Republican who swept the crimes under the table and pardoned as much as he could.
When Trump left, he was followed by a Democrat... who let the crimes disappear. Who appointed the worst possible AG for the situation. Who did not lift one single finger to see that crimes were exposed to the light of day. Exactly that "national healing" you mentioned.
I sure hope we replace Trump with a Democratic President willing to tell Congress flat out "I want you to shine some light on the past 4 years. Find what you can, expose it all. Let the chips fall where they may." For that matter I also want him to tell his AG to actually indict and prosecute anyone whose actions meet "normal FBI" thresholds for indictments. If Trump had been treated like any other Jan6th suspect, he'd have been arrested, indicted and tried within 18 months of Biden taking office.
This is an interesting point. When Ford pardoned Nixon, Republicans were still capable of shame. Being forced out of office was humiliating. But even back then there were critics of Ford's action. And we are now facing the consequences of that precedent. Of course, our cultural standards of behavior have deteriorated significantly in the last 50 years.
A "Four Star Admiral", the highest officer grade/rank in peace time, is also a Seal, ordered the killing of two survivors of an alleged drug boat destroyed by a missile. His reason? They might be able to cause harm to the largest United States Naval force ever assembled is the area. A "Seaman Apprentice," one step up from the bottom of the enlisted ranks would have seen the need for rescue! The shame “the Admiral”, Sect. of Defiance Hogsbreath, and the entire Trump GOP administration has brought to the United States. I am unable express my discuss in civil words. Believe me with 28 years in the navy I could do so. One need not ask what side I am on. It is past time to find the courage to remove the Trump/GOP from office. Outrage won’t do it. Stop "Kicking the "Can down the road" before tRump "Kicks the Nuclear Football." A few weeks ago I commented that I believed our military officers would prevent Trump from using nuclear weapons.
From the example above and a few other events, I am no longer so sure.
No offense, but this should have been stopped immediately. When reports that Hegseth was blowing boats and people out of the water with no evidence of any wrongdoing, just Trump’s claim that they were carrying drugs.
Where are the drugs?
Where are the drug dealers?
Who decided that these people were ‘terrorists’?
Have they attacked anyone? No
Do they shoot at American boats? No
Was a court involved? No
This is all being done because Trump doesn’t want any more information about him and Epstein and is being run by a weekend news anchor on FOX.
If this happened under Biden what would the Republicans have done?
Maybe the whole point of killing the 2 survivors was to prevent them to demonstrate that they were only fishermen or immigrants or just people moving from one island to other or in the worse case scenario, drug dealers transporting small amounts of drugs that can easily be intercepted at sea.
Very true. We the public, members of Congress, and every media outlet in the US should have started shouting about this at the time it started and not stopped. We are far too phlegmatic about everything our criminal president is doing. The most outrageous statements and acts get little reaction. Death, Where is thy sting?
How many other illegal orders are being given verbally or on unofficial channels which “disappear”? It makes perfect sense why six congress members would bring up “illegal” military orders. The administration must be held accountable. And if the president tries to pretend he “knows nothing about it” again, it’s a serious mistake.
It's ALL been murder. He has done nothing, they have provided 0 evidence, to let them off the hook for _any_ of these attacks. They deserve no benefit of the doubt at this point. They are treating innocent people like characters in a video game.
I too have thought of the video game comparison. It's reprehensible.

Those games, in my viewpoint, are reprehensible on their own. It makes me wonder: how many of us those responsible for the innocent deaths were raised on such video games?
Even if they’re not innocent, summarily executing them is a crime.
That’s how Hegseth looks at his military role – a shoot-‘em-up video game.
I have to think that as a boy he mutilated and killed small animals.
Perfect depiction of his mindset. Normal people are understandably having a difficult time trying to wrap their heads around this....
Absolutely.
NEARLY ALL MEN CAN STAND ADVERSITY,
BUT IF YOU WANT TO TEST A MAN'S CHARACTER,
GIVE HIM POWER.

Thank you for that link. This was well worth reading about.
Hegseth will be the next Trump stooge to find out that doing his dirty work is a fast pass to the courthouse and possibly jail.
Hope so

I know that Michael David Flynn...I mean totally impeached by everyone to clarify
That can't happen soon enough. Unless a 25th Amendment action happens first.
Forget jail, I think he should face a firing squad.
Trump stooges have nothing to fear from our judicial system.
He never should have become SecDef. He should have been bounced to the curb after the Signal fiasco. Now he's guilty of accessory to murder. He needs to have his passport confiscated. Maybe bustin' rocks for a few years will do him some good. It would certainly do our country some good..

Even if it was a drug boat, blowing it up is still MURDER! It is the job of LEOs to deal with suspected drug boats...
It is only alleged that they were "drug boats", and it was well determined that several of them were not.
Exactly!

Shame he retired Ann. We need people like him to confront illegality in our armed forces. If not decent people like your stepson, whom?
It was tough decision. We lost his younger brother, career Ranger, a few years ago in Syria. Both wanted to serve their country and fellow citizens
I imagine Ann, that for him it was probably the hardest decision in his life. I salute him and you and your whole family from the bottom of my heart.
Thank you. They loved every minute of their service.
Ann, I’m deeply sorry for your loss.

Hegseth, like Trump and so many others in Trump's administration, is a morally bankrupt individual.
Agreed. Except that calling it bankrupt suggests that he once had morality to lose.
The Senate vows to investigate....how quaint.
Prosecutions must begin with investigations.
True if we had a functioning DoJ.
We don't have a DoJ anymore but we have a Department of trump's Defence (DotD) paid with our taxes.
I prefer to call it the Department of Injustice.
They’re not going to do s**t. It’s all Kabuki theater.

Yup. Try and convict all of them. Sweep the (white) house clean!
