An incredibly unsettling conversation especially following the earlier discussion between Jen Rubin and Tom Malinowski.
Among all the bad news, 2 struck me. One that it may not be true, despite reporting, that T is actually following through on providing (selling) Europe military equipment that is in turn sold to Ukraine. Two that Tulsi Gabbard has announced an end to intelligence sharing between the US and Europe.
Breaks my heart to hear Tim May say that Ukrainians can't feel disappointment if they don't have expectations. And their expectations have fallen as low as it is possible to fall.
I am just a member of the protesting public who 7 months ago left all this sort of heavy thinking to the foreign policy experts. But ... it is incredibly frustrating to hear Tim Mak say that the US plays an irreplaceable role in foreign diplomacy in being the one voice that speaks for all the interested parties. Europe, say Tim Mak, is too fractured to organize itself as a unified voice. So here's my frustration. We have more than 3 more years of T who will continue to dominate foreign affairs despite what happens in 2026 elections. The US is a lost cause. Why then can't we begin to think more hopefully about a Europe that finds its voice - this would certainly be the moment.
Whatever Tulsi thinks she did, I think it's more likely that Europe decided to end to intelligence sharing with the US because Gabbard is pro-Russian and utterly incompetent, along with the rest of the clowns.
For all the analysis, which is very much appreciated, in the end the conclusion is simple.
Republicans, who are responsible for everything Trump says and does, have chosen fascism over democracy. With that choice, European democracies are no longer allies. Ukraine's goal of joining the west/NATO is in conflict with Republican goals of bolstering Russian/Putin fascism. Sadly, in the end that's where I think we are at. If there's a chance of Ukraine surviving this Russian assault it rests with the Europeans. Whether they are up to the new world order only time will tell.

The EU will have to work harder to protect Ukraine’s interests in their ability to have security and sovereignty from Russia. As long as there is a war they will have to be supplied with weapons. Putin is a psychopath and unless he is taken out some way or another I see nothing changing. If Trumpty Dumpty is taken out he would be replaced by JD Vance who is no better. Vance is a fascist himself. Only a new U.S. administration that’s not GOP would most likely have a better coherent approach to dealing with Russia.
