I once heard that CBS news didn't make money in it's golden years, and Bill Paley didn't care. He was proud of his news division, and subsidized it out of a sense of duty, recognizing the importance to democracy of a strong news division.
How low we have fallen since then. Now it's "anything for a buck"
Something happened when "news" became "media" and the powers that be determined that even the news had to make money (and gain ratings). Giving us the well-researched facts was no longer enough.
In my case, when the closest CBS outlet went to over-the-air digital broadcasting, it became unavailable more than not. With things as they are today, I don't see any point in trying to make it more reliable. What happened to the Washington Post is now happening to CBS.
Bari Weiss was one of the main reasons I left NYT as a reader and subscriber.
This is the death knell for CBS, and I am old enough to actually remember Edward R. Murrow and Walter Cronkite when he was less than 40. This will simply become the Government News Outlet, saying whatever the 2025 Gang wants it to say.
You know, although I will be attacked as being anti-Semitic, we are seeing extremes developing throughout our country that have their foundation and development in Israel. From the news media, of all stripes, none of which can even remotely compare to the articles' references, to universities, which immediately eliminated free speech at the behest of Trump, it seems that Israel is the one singular connection in this web.
We do not ever discuss that, even after the last two years of our nation's support of genocide, which included both political parties. Yet here we are again, being reminded that this endless line of American citizens (with the exception of Murdoch), whose values and political affiliation and actions, reflect a loyalty to another country, far more than the one they live in. They support the efforts of AIPAC (American Israel Public Affairs Committee), the non-profit that had $156M in donations in 2024! AIPAC spent most of that money supporting political candidates who support Israel, and specifically those who opposed Democrats!
So, here we are, losing our very democracy, with an authoritarian government entrenching itself deeper each month, our freedom of speech being removed, having the military in our non-Republican Cities, and deliberately resegregating our country! Yet, despite all the evidence, including articles like this one, this overthrow of our government has been heavily made possible, not by China or Russia, but by those who support and possibly take specific orders from another country, Israel!
Of course, this alone is not the reason behind our current fall into the destruction of our democracy, but one has to ask what Russia and China must feel, decades of trying to end our democracy? How a small nation like Israel could have been the main instrument in America's decline? Yet, here we are, and we remain unable to even recognize this peril, let alone speak of it. That is how real and effective propaganda works!
I think people should give Bari Weiss a chance. This article keeps calling her anti-woke and pro-Israel, which may be true, but those terms do not define her entirety. She is not anti-democratic or pro-authoritarian, she is not interested in promoting biased lies, and will not suck up to Trump. In other words, she has some integrity. That's important and if Ellison wants another Fox News, she'll probably be fired or quit. A more important negative is that she lacks experience running a news organization and as a result may lack all-important HR/communication skills as well as business know-how. But she did found a media organization that is very successful. So again, let's wait and see what she does.
She founded a gossip organization that doesn't bother with checking facts or sources. There are a lot of people out there who have the ability to make money; that doesn't mean they should be in charge of bringing actual news to the citizens of the country.

I’ve already stopped watching CBS. Once they were required to hire a censor (spelled: ombudsman) they were cooked. Now they have two!
