Kristi must play dress-up in a prison uniform. A ball and chain would be a nice accessory.

Noem and her agency of thugs should be considered domestic terrorists, not their victims.

Yodagirl's avatar

Exactly-everything this administration states about the Democrats is a lie and applies directly to them!

Steve 218's avatar

Ah yes. The word is 'projection', and the MAGApublicans are most adept at it.

But not a golden chain right? Would she be allowed to keep the 50k Rolex she displayed in front of the caged poor guys in El Salvador jail?

You are the most articulate forceful Democratic strategist on the planet. Glad to hear that Neera Tanden is getting focused.

Here's one thing that gets me, in the sense that it keeps coming back to mind: How is it that a person who bragged about shooting a 'disobedient' puppy in the face EVER BE CONSIDERED fit for duty in any role in government, the military, or the wastewater management system in and city, anywhere outside the gulag of the former USSR? The American military would have screened her out. And what does that say about too many people in our country today, and especially the members of this administration?

John Ranta's avatar

Leigh, Trump considered Noem shooting her puppy as a qualification for the job. It ensured she had no qualms about cruelty.

I hear Trump doesn't like dogs :-(

Sharon M. Morrison's avatar

As to "Trump doesn't like dogs," I would guess that he has had some unpleasant experiences with canines. Dogs can sense evil--so he likely has heard lots of growls and probably saw no tail wagging.

Al Keim's avatar

I've never met a prominent politician but I never met a dog I didn't like.

Our government (specifically our system for electing people) is not capable of screening people like her out. We have Trump in the oval office for the very same reason.

Leigh, that "one thing" phenomenon bothers me as well. How did she ever get confirmed? Yet, here we are. Yes, it keeps happening ever since Trump was allowed to run for President, despite a long documented history of abuse, business and personal failures, sexual misconduct, including probable pedophilia, combined with virtually no history of acts of generosity, kindness, wisdom, or civil duty. Despite this, the Republicans and their Supreme Court made his Presidency happen. There is no logical reason for this to have happened, yet here we are.

There is something very foul afoot in our Republic. We are in a defining moment of our history, and unfortunately, we have to fight for our freedom in whatever way we can. We can no longer afford to sit back and think that our Congress critters will represent us. They need to be pushed to act on our behalf, or they must be discarded. Step 1 for positive change is to realize we are already in a fight, whether we wanted to be or not. Once you understand Step 1, Step 2 is to win the fight.

We must fight every day to ensure we have a fair election and a Congressional vote affirmation process this year! There is no other option.

Leigh Horne's avatar

Marcus, this might sound strange or at least unusual, but I have, through various experiences, reading and practice over time developed what some might call a 'sixth sense' about things. I prefer to call it a somewhat refined intuition. Having admitted that, which might open my private view for perhaps unwelcome judgment, I'd just like to say that your words have a sort of piercing 'perfume' that might be of great value, were you to continue tp use them with total courage. It seems to me we've come to the edge of things, and will need a rare courage indeed to move forward through the end of an era toward who knows exactly what. A better sort of life based on truer values, one hopes. Thanks so much for this. Made my day.

Tim Matchette's avatar

That is how we won our Independence by fighting. It starts now. And we can not take our foot off the peddle.

Exactly, what DOES that say about the people who support her and employ her, certainly nothing commendable.

Susanna J. Sturgis's avatar

". . . especially the members of this administration" is key. Trump wasn't looking for competent people. They let him down bigly in the first administration. He wasn't gonna get fooled again. Bit in the butt, yes. Fooled, no.

Stef Morgan's avatar

And Stephen Miller. He is the poisonous catalyst behind much of this...

LHS's avatar

And he's gutless, now trying desperately to point the finger at someone else for the Alex Pretti murder. From the New York Times: "And as the White House walks back some of its harshest statements, a blame game of sorts has erupted, with Mr. Miller suggesting immigration authorities in Minneapolis may not have been following protocol. In a statement, Mr. Miller said the White House had advised Customs and Border Protection officials to create a 'physical barrier' between 'arrest teams' and 'disrupters.'

'We are evaluating why the C.B.P. team may not have been following that protocol,' said Mr. Miller, who just days earlier had called Mr. Pretti a 'would-be assassin.'"

LHS's avatar

Also, Adam Serwer, writing in The Atlantic, pointed out what a chicken Miller actually is: "Consider Miller’s bizarre meltdown while addressing Memphis police in October. “The gangbangers that you deal with—they think that they’re ruthless? They have no idea how ruthless we are. They think they’re tough? They have no idea how tough we are,” Miller said. “They think they’re hard-core? We are so much more hard-core than they are.” Around this time, Miller moved his family onto a military base—for safety reasons."

Events have moved on. Now the vote is under attack. Fulton County is the dry run for what the FBI will do all over the country in the mid-terms. I can't believe the judge approved this action under the terms they did. It could have been handled differently with an FBI review of ballots ON SITE and with supervision by election officials and representatives of both parties. Since it wasn't done that way, voters cannot trust the Trump regime not to lie about what they find. The ballots are now compromised.

Noem knowingly violated her own oath and she should be held accountable, just like one of us (or Noem) would be held accountable for violating an oath to testify truthfully in court.

In 1803, Chief Justice John Marshall and SCOTUS in Marbury v. Madison emphasized that “[t]he government of the United States has been emphatically termed a government of laws, and not of men.” Article VI of our Constitution declares the supreme law of the land, makes our Constitution the paramount law in the supreme law of the land, and requires oaths to support our Constitution. Article VI states the foundation of the rule of law in America.

SCOTUS in Marbury explained and emphasized that the People in our Constitution “direct the judges to take an oath to support” our Constitution because such “oath certainly applies, in an especial manner, to [judges’] conduct in their official character.” In Marbury, SCOTUS emphasized that the reason every “judge” must “swear to discharge his duties agreeably to the constitution of the United States” is that our “constitution forms” the primary “rule for their government.” Everything in Marbury about oaths applies equally to everyone who takes an oath to support our Constitution.

Noem knowingly violated her own oath (required by Article VI of our Constitution and a federal statute (5 U.S.C. § 3331)) to "support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic" and "bear true faith and allegiance" to our Constitution.

From the earliest days of this nation, James Madison (rightly lauded as the Father of the Constitution and the Father of the Bill of Rights) repeatedly emphasized that information and knowledge were essential to the effective operation of our Constitution:

"A popular Government, without popular information, or the means of acquiring it, is but a Prologue to a Farce or a Tragedy; or, perhaps both. Knowledge will forever govern ignorance: And a people who mean to be their own Governors, must arm themselves with the power which knowledge gives."

Noem knowingly sought to undermine our Constitution and our self-government. She knowingly sought to turn a tragedy into a farce.

Marianne Kendrick's avatar

Trump is guilty of the same crimes as Noem but the corrupt conservative justices of the supreme court have handed Trump a get out of jail free card. He should still be impeached and removed. Perhaps a creative lawyer can still find a way to prosecute him for his crimes.

Jack Jordan's avatar

One of the reasons it's important to understand what our Constitution says and means and what SCOTUS wrote in Marbury v. Madison is that they prove that nothing six judges wrote in Trump v. United States can protect Trump when he commits crimes. When Trump violates his oath of office, he cannot be performing any "core" or "official" duty. It's legally and logically impossible. The judges' opinion in Trump v. United States and their so-called judgment were just fake law. Nobody who is anybody should pay any attention to what they wrote other than to show that it cannot stop anybody (state or federal) from prosecuting Trump for the crimes he commits against the American people.

Richard Brody's avatar

He may get away with stuff pursuant to the Supreme Court ruling. But the jury in the court of public opinion can and should sit in judgement of T…p and all that he has wrought on our country. Guilty as charged! Throw the bum out!

Jack Jordan's avatar

Chief Justice John Marshall and SCOTUS in Marbury v. Madison rightly emphasized how and why “[t]he government of the United States has been emphatically termed a government of laws, and not of men.” For example, SCOTUS highlighted that "the particular phraseology of the constitution of the United States confirms and strengthens the principle [that is] essential to all written constitutions, that" any conduct of any purported public servant "repugnant to the constitution is void; and that courts, as well as [all] other departments [and judges and all other public servants], are bound by that instrument," i.e., our Constitution. "Certainly all those who have framed written constitutions" (especially constitutions that were ratified by the People) "contemplate them as forming the fundamental and paramount law of the nation, and consequently the theory of every such government must be, that" any "act" of any purported public servant "repugnant to the constitution, is void."

The unfortunate fact is that those holding majorities in all branches of current USA gov't don't read nor know nor care about the facts.

Richard Brody's avatar

If violating their oath is a reason for removal, then that’s like opening the flood gates. Too many of these violators to mention: None should be exempt.

Bill's avatar

Well, we can look at this one person at a time, but the truth is that essentially every single Republican in elected office has committed the same crime, because they have violated their oaths of office! That is why we are finding it so difficult to get a handle on this war. Republicans know that they are violating their oaths and that if they break from the group, they are subject to the Courts.

So, we are caught shortsighted here. We end up trying to go after these criminals one by one, but that will never work in the long run! We need to find the key that opens the door for us to grab a bunch all at once! From a military perspective, hbat means figuring out a way to lure the group into an ambush! Who on the democratic side is forming such a plan?

Only 2.0% of our nation is actively participating in toppling the t regime & 3.5% is necessary. March 28th is the next NO KINGS peaceful protest 👑. These are apathetic stats on the brink of losing our Democracy, Humanity & our Earth, in a setting of cold blooded murder x2 by ICE in addition to numerous children in ICE custody who have died bc they did not receive their medication while only a handful of Congressional Democrats are actively participating in the t regime resistance which is appalling!

In Ohio it’s Husted who is up for reelection not Moreno

Scott M. Krasner's avatar

Jennifer, I look forward to your daily column and appreciate how you lay out arguments for paths that could be taken to weaken Trump. However, there are a lot of "Dems should do X or Y." Given that the Dems do not hold any majorities, how do you expect impeachment efforts to begin and to be successful? Do you assume some number of Republicans will join these efforts? Given that the GOP members who speak up include those who aren't running for another term do you think enough others will cross the line to support these initiatives to hold Trump officials accountable for their actions? I'd love to hear you expound on how that strategy would work. Thanks for all your efforts.

Some rethuglican senators will vote to oust her just to show their independent streak. But it will put the rest of them on record as supporting a stochastic killer and terrorist.

Irena's avatar

An excellent question. Other strategies definitely needed.

Sharon L. Shelly's avatar

Yes! Force her out and see how many of her co-conspirators she'll squeal on.

One correction: Sadly, Ohio's Bernie Moreno is not up for reelection in 2026. But our other senator, Jon Husted, IS.

We might want to take note of social media and tech companies curtailing our free speech and assembly rights. I have been wondering how long it would take for the resistance to realize this threat and work toward securing safe communications abilities, and the safeguarding of evidence. Their war against liberal democracy is multifaceted and we need to fight it as such.

Minnesota. What's become of Mid-West nice? To the East is Wisconsin. South is Iowa. To the West are North and South Dakota. Has there been any support for their fellow Mid-Western state from the senators representing their neighbors? Not that I've heard.

The senators from those four states who are saying "crickets" in our national time of need are: WIS: Ron Johnson (R) and Tammy Baldwin (D), IOWA: Chuck Grassley (R) and Joni Ernst (R), S Dakota: John Thune (R) and Mike Rounds (R), and N Dakota: John Hoeven (R) and Kevin Cramer (R).

Steven Branch's avatar

Fortunately, Joni ("Well, we're all going to die.") Ernst is not running for reelection.

That’s because few if any of those states are impediments to T…p (They like me, you know, said the president).
