Menopause can affect how common drugs and medications are metabolized in the body. There’s still a lot to learn about osteoporosis and other conditions that can crop up around menopause. Many thanks for your advocacy in this area.

Excellent article. Too many women in the USA have no idea how little medical research money is spent on women’s health. Most studies continue to be done on men and the results simply applied to both genders. Feminine specific health issues have been largely ignored until just the past quarter century. And now that we’re finally on the threshold of some incredible advances and progress in female health, along comes Mr. D. J. Misogyny.

Correct. That means we lose a lot of money each year because we don't focus on women's health. Note how the so-called party of fiscal responsibility doesn't talk about that.

We must advocate for legal protection for perimenopause care for incarcerated women. I heard a story on NPR (possibly This American Life) in which an incarcerated women had her hormone treatments yanked because they were working. It nearly broke my heart in two. She got the hormones her body needed, then the for-profit company providing prison medical care decided it was unnecessary because the symptoms had abated under hormone care. This is not how it works! Her symptoms came back as soon as they withheld treatment, and she suffered for years. We should require that hormonal care for incarcerated women be offered for the duration of perimenopause. Yes, for even 10 years if necessary.

Thank you! It's a very Informative article. I must admit, that the only thing I don't understand is why Trump changed his mind about WFI. Since he first took office, he has waged a war against women. And, once Kevin Roberts, CEO of The Heritage Foundation and master mind of Project 2025, met him, JD Vance was installed as Vice President, and Leo Leonard, Chair of the Federalist Society was given $1.6B to expand his influence, Trump has followed the Project 2025 blueprint.

In terms of females, the only goal Roberts, Vance and Leo would seem to share is the belief that young girls, who should either be brought up as conservative Catholics or Christian Nationalists, remain virgins until they marry, which should be early, have no access to contraception and abortions, have lots of babies, raise their children, and support their husbands' ambitions.

I'm not aware that Project 2025 says anything about menopausal women. But, since Trump, who is their mouthpiece, appointed RFK, Jr. as Secretary of Health and Human Services, and like Kennedy has convinced MAGAs and others, that vaccines are dangerous, the life expectancy in the US might significantly change.

Childhood deaths will inevitably rise, and so will maternal deaths, if women can't get the medical help they need during pregnancy and afterwards. Some doctors are now afraid to treat pregnant women, so maybe a larger portion of women will die before they reach menopause. When one considers Trumps' and Congressional Republicans' willingness to gut Medicaid, they can get rid of a lot of low income adults and children as well, because they won't be able to afford any healthcare. And the drastic cuts to critical medical research will put everyone in peril.

This is excellent. However, I think many forget how much money the US loses by NOT focusing on women's health. Nothing will change unless we stress that and have more women in politics and that means the insurance companies. Note: the US does NOT have a healthcare system. We have a wealth-care system.

It's not covered enough in med school. I know someone who graduated right before the pandemic in their obgyne program. They were given less than an hour on Endometriosis. And that lecture still gave them the WRONG information. A hysterectomy isn't a cure. Burning it away isn't a cure. Pregancy isn't a cure. Lupron (a drug for PROSTATE cancer) isn't a cure. She was taught there's a cure. There's no cure for it. CUTTING it out is the best 'cure' so far.
