This presumes that there will be a "next election," something that I fear is not guaranteed; and, if there should be a "next election," well, there's no guarantee it will be fair.
This is certainly one of the first things that occurred to me when Trump was installed in the White House for a gobsmacking second time.
Also, I am glad to see that you refer to him as Trump or Mr. Trump but not as President Trump. Thanks for that.
The nationwide elections apparatus must be protected from the likes of Musk and the tech bros, and foreign espionage.
If hackers can cause shutdowns and data breaches to banks, hospitals, local governments, colleges, credit bureaus, insurance exchanges, etc., what would lead one to think that they can't access election systems? Elections software is updated via computers connected, if only briefly, to the web, or flash drives, that are easily corrupted.
And now Dominion Voting Systems, used in many states, has been bought by a Republican election denier. He will control the hardware and software, with little if any oversight.
They are counting on Democrats to have a knee-jerk aversion to the concept of election hacking because Trump falsely accused Democrats of doing it. But the bottom line is that it can be done.
Remember above all else: every Trump accusation ("Democrats rigged the 2020 election") amounts to an admission. He and his corrupt and unprincipled minions rigged 2024; they intend to rig 2026 and 2028.
Interestingly, this has not been a major political issue for Democrats. How is it that they remain silent to this sale, especially since being able to run the machines and controlling the SCOTUS almost guarantees their winning? Now, they do not need the redirecting from all of the States. This was another plan by Republicans that they pulled off without a hitch or complaint. We can only wonder how much was paid for this company?
I have pointed out the fact of Dominion having been bought by a fascist numerous times, but no one seems to be interested in this fact, including here at the Contrarian. This is very curious because of its possible (and probable) outcome on the 2026 elections.
Wow. I read & watch a lot of news. Subscribe to The Contrarian, Meidas, Talking Feds, The Lowdown & NYT. But I never heard about Dominion selling to the Right Wing owned Liberty Vote. I Googled it and there it was in an ABC article from October 9th 2025. So it’s been reported, but somehow buried. Thanks for sharing this.
One more obvious thing I’ll mention. This is why they “Flood the Zone “. Every. Single. Day. So they can distract us from the EVEN WORSE things they’ve got going on in the background. Contact your Congressperson.
What kind of oversight was there of the purchase of Dominion?
You are very welcome. I don't even remember where I read it, but I find it extremely curious that it has not become a very well publicized discussion everywhere. Come to think f it, I find it downright scary, considering it's potential influence on the 2026 elections.
I also find it curious that Dominion, so affronted by Fox’s defamation, fought and won what? $700+ millions, then turned around and sold to a fascist of all people, who is no doubt likely to turn Dominion into what they were so offended by being accused of being.
The machines (tabulators) used in my Minnesota county and the adjacent county (and therefore I would expect the entire state) have to be individually programmed to the candidates and issues specific to each voting entity (city, county). I know this because a friend of mine, the head judge in his precinct, had to call in a programmer on an emergency basis when the pre-election-day test run (which, by the way, are open to the public although I doubt many people attend) revealed a programming error. Extrapolating this to other tabulators, it's hard to see how either the hardware or the software could be centrally controlled, especially since they have no internet connection (they just plug into a wall socket, with no Wi-Fi capability). From reading news coverage of the 2020 election challenges, I see that other states (I recall Idaho in particular) have the same sort of machines. And they're just vote tallying equipment, not "voting machines." I don't know if they're Dominion, however, or whether or not all vote tabulators are similar, or whether other states use internet-capable equipment.
Just did a little checking. Per the Minnesota Secretary of State's office, my county uses the ES&S (Election Systems & Software) DS200 model scanner and tabulator for paper ballots. Some parts of the state apparently use Dominion's ImageCast, which is also an optical-scan tabulator. The DS200 seems to have no remote connectivity capability; the summary info. on Dominion ImageCast is unclear.
News coverage (msn, npr, abcnews, The Hill, Wired, VoteBeat) of the purchase of Dominion by Liberty Vote is interesting.
Trump probably rigged 2016, too. That’s why he was so sure that 2020 was rigged - his tiny brain can’t conceive of the possibility that someone could beat him legitimately.
I too I "am glad to see that you refer to him as Trump or Mr. Trump but not as President Trump. Thanks for that."
Respecting the office (the Presidency) necessarily means not showing any respect for Trump. Trump has shown that he has no respect for the office or for the oath of the President (to "preserve, protect and defend [our] Constitution" to "the best of" the President's "Ability"). Trump has proved beyond a reasonable doubt that he has no respect for us or our Constitution.
It is entirely appropriate to refer to him as 'The Con' and avoid any pretense of relative respect. He gives no quarter in his rhetoric and deserves none from us.
He is trying to turn the nation into Pottersville.
Of course there's no guarantee that the next elections -- make it plural: elections happen frequently, and the most recent ones produced interesting results, wouldn't you say? -- will be fair. Elections haven't been "fair" (or "free and fair" as the saying goes) at least since the Citizens United decision of 2010, and they were problematic for decades before that, thanks to the consolidation of news media, the rise of Fox, and the dearth of civics education in schools and elsewhere.
Don the Con has been a bigot and racist his entire adult life, starting at least in 1970 when the Federal Government took him and his father to court (and won) for refusing to rent to African-Americans. He got at least some of it from his father, who was for a time a Klan member in the 1920a.
Not only his he a bigot, he makes no attempt to hide it. The only way he could be more obvious is if he showed up to work in a white hood and sheet. And the bumpkins, morons, Yahoos, misogynists, bigots, racists, rubes, and boobs of Red America eat it up.

Beautifully stated. I am so grateful for the cadre of columnists and political analysts - including Jen Rubin - who continue to boldly call out the corruption, lawlessness, moral depravity, cruelty, mendacity and shameful incompetency of this disgraceful administration.
So....do any Congressional Republicans agree that anyone who refers to a human being as “garbage,” or smears an entire community of immigrants (the vast majority of whom are legal immigrants), has no place in public life?
If so, please identify them.
Here in Baghdad By the Sea, we have a schism in our MAGAT delegation:
Miami [Republican] Congresswoman María Elvira Salazar on Sunday called the Trump administration’s latest immigration crackdown “un-American” in a biting statement to the Miami Herald.
Wow! That may be the first time Laura Loopy actually got it right! Now, can she pass this vital information on to the Prez? He seems to be a little confused about the source of fenanyl.
He doesn't give a flying fig about fentanyl. He just wants to kill people in his desperate attempt to emulate Putin. I believe the Hernandez pardon was part of his scheme to control all of North, Central, and South America. And, "every accusation is a confession" because, with no concept of fact, accuracy, or reality, he can't see any prosecution as anything other than self-dealing. Everything he does is for his own profit and self-aggrandizement; I think he honestly believes everyone else is just like him.
Sorry to say so, I don´t think he is capable of honesty. And I don´t think he gives any thought whatsoever to what other people are like. For him it´s ME, ME, ME and whatever is left after that he will take that as well.
Take it from a psychiatrist with 30 years+ experience.
I agree. The Supreme Court has made him virtually immune for anything he does in an "official capacity". It's no wonder he thinks he is a king or an autocrat. The Republican Congress has continually surrendered its power to him. No wonder he believes he can hurt, intimidate and carry out extrajudicial executions on the high seas.
Every Trump regime "crackdown" is un-American in my opinion. I would love to quote Henry II, but I'm afraid it would provoke an FBI investigation for advocating mayhem.
Let's not forget Trump's non-stop criticism of our European allies, apparently for being successful democracies, while he parrots Putin's talking points about Europe in general and Ukraine in particular. According to The Guardian newspaper, European governments no longer consider the US a reliable ally. Who can blame them?
Every accusation a projection. Every charge a self-indictment. Every obscenity and deranged post a mirror to his cruelty, vileness, stupidity and the cowardice of those who keep covering for him, justifying him, softening him, apologizing for him, doing his dirty work for him.
The dark spell is breaking. We know it. They know it, too. It explains their last-minute desperations.
And let's not forget when Trump spewed that hateful rhetoric, his entire Cabinet applauded him and his VP pounded the table like Khrushchev. Despicable.
The president's recent 'statements' go beyond the customary rudeness and personal insults that are part of his modus operandi. They are indications that he has lost the ability to filter his thoughts before expressing them. More alarming is the attendant loss of impulse control. Such a pronounced cognitive privation is a clear sign of dementia. Does he still have access to nuclear weapons? Is he still permitted to contact foreign leaders without advisors present?

The removal of the recommendation for immunizing all newborns against Hepatitis B was made by people who apparently don't understand how robust that particular virus is - difficult to kill and infectious even in very small amounts. We could have wiped out Hepatitis B infections in another generation by continuing to immunize newborns. Instead, RFK jr. has chosen the opposite.
hepatitis b will kill babies, or cause them to lose limbs or their hearing. advancements have been made in europe by organizations that have rallied around the vaccines. they work tirelessly to ensure people know the importance of these vaccines. hepatitis awareness day is observed worldwide. as the u.s. slides into the dark ages before vaccines could save lives existed, the rest of the world advances and moves forward into a healthier future.
Calling people garbage, vermin, poisoning the blood of our nation are terms directly from the Nazi handbook, so it is no surprise that the Dear Leader and his fascist ass lickers spew this invective on a daily basis. What is most disturbing is how the media talks about the policies of this regime and the Dear Leader’s behavior as if it were rational and normal. In reality, America is being led my a severely mentally impaired, sick man who has no filters and no boundaries. He speaks gibberish and his toadies applaud. His behavior ranges from talking about bathrooms to making weird noises. Does anyone else, outside of an insane asylum, do this?
He should be in a psych ward or a nursing home. Surely there is a way to get rid of the real garbage that is desecrating the Oval Office?
"What is most disturbing is how the media talks about the policies of this regime and the Dear Leader’s behavior as if it were rational and normal".
Yes, Gloria! Spot on!
The media's rationalization and normalization will, I believe, become the achilles heal of American democracy. They (the media) are MOST responsible for the condition and situation America now finds itself in. They are our true traitors.
It's long past time to trot out the 25th Amendment on this blithering buffoon. It's not enough to say he's unfit for office. He's unfit to be a human being. Too bad his cabinent or the Republican members of Congress are too afraid to take this step.
His cabinet is not afraid, Chris, they enjoy it. they were handpicked by Trump for their loyalty and subservience and their similarity and personality to him, at least it his own mind.
You know what's going to be awesome, Don? When all those swine are behind bars. I was worried for a time, but Nov. 4 put some pep in my step. The American people, or at least the sane ones, don't want a corrupt idiot king ruining our country. I've been saying this for 10 years, but the worst of that man has yet to be revealed to the masses. His end is near.
The people who would need to invoke the 25th amendment are Trump toadies, so that will never happen. And if it did happen, we’d be stuck with a president Vance. Not much of an improvement.
"Anyone who refers to a human being as “garbage,” or smears an entire community of immigrants (the vast majority of whom are legal immigrants), has no place in public life."
Hear hear!! There is no way to sane-wash or normalise commentary such as this from the leader of a country, or frankly, anyone else. It's uncivilised, and in Trump's case, a sign of a man with a weak and disturbed mind. It's also incredibly juvenile to try to make onesself better by putting down others.
Trump will never be satisfied unless he’s referring to someone or a whole class of people in a derogatory manner. That’s his style. He is like a school yard bully but maybe it’s past time to start calling him out and reminding him what a racist he really is.
"Trump would be well advised to stop throwing around terms like “garbage” in connection with decent, hard-working, loyal Americans—about whom he knows nothing."
He won't pay attention to being "well advised." How can he be made to pay for slighting Somalis and others aside from waiting for the mid term and general election? No warning has made an appreciable dent in his continued onslaught against immigrants and Americans.
The most frightening remark that Trump has made to our military leaders was when he summoned the country's generals to listen to a draft evader's harangue : “We’re under invasion from within. No different than a foreign enemy but more difficult in many ways because they don’t wear uniforms."
This remark by Trump was reminiscent of and consistent with his notorious proclamations during a Presidential campaign that “We pledge to you that we will root out the communists, Marxists, fascists, and the radical left thugs that live like vermin within the confines of our country” and that “The threat from outside forces is far less sinister, dangerous, and grave than the threat from within. Our threat is from within”.[CNN Transcripts]
And let us remember that Trump labelled undocumented immigrants as “rapists and criminals” and frequently calls the press “the enemy of the people”.
At the top of our country's leadership is a strongman with his junta of misfits, flattering sycophants and downright wackos who blindly buy into and enforce every ugly visceral urge he has.
His most recent attack upon his perceived "garbage" within our country is yet another eruption of his appeal to his dwindling cult follows whom he feels, as Hitler did, that if he can win over their most subliminal prejudices and hatreds, and congeal and harness that loyalty into a political following, he can create a critical mass that will make a difference in state legislatures and at the polls. This is what Trump continues to see as his winning formula for political success.
It's not hard to predict that if he can redefine drug smugglers and drug runners as "Narco-Terrorists" and order his military to blow up their boats and kill them on sight on the high seas, it may only be a matter of time before he uses our military to domestically target the "enemy within."
How is sending in strongarm tactics of ICE, other agencies of Homeland Security, and the National Guard into our cities not a forerunner of targeting "the enemy within"? The effort is misdirected projection. Trump and his regime are the true enemy within. We can see it.

I agree with that; I’m still waiting for the insurrection act and elections to be suspended, etc., or undeclared war against Venezuela.
Too much loyalty remains in the cabinet for them to take the action. This is one reason why trump chose them in the first place.
Much, much, much worse than a schoolyard bully. He is detroying much of US democracy.
Oh absolutely!
Excellent commentary Jennifer!
Bear in mind that he has already, in his first term, floated the idea of shooting protesters.
How is sending in strongarm tactics of ICE, other agencies of Homeland Security, and the National Guard into our cities not a forerunner of targeting "the enemy within"? The effort is misdirected projection. Trump and his regime are the true enemy within. We can see it.
